  • Naina, What are you doing there?  Someone enquired.
I was about to enter the ‘Aravinda Purnanga Siksha Kendra, Puducherry’, an integrated education center and was startled by hearing someone calling Naina.

I am Siraj Malhotra, founder chairman of ‘Malhotra Foundation, Izzatnagar.’ and General Manager of a US based Cloud MNC, staying at Chicago, and  was on a formal visit to the school for it’s formal adoption by the Foundation.

I looked here and there in search of Naina and found a little cute girl who was looking at the Ice Cream vendor behind the closed school gate.

I went to her and called, “Naina.”

She lifted her head slowly and looked at me with her sweet cute eyes as if we were quite acquainted for a long time.

Oh! God. I was stunned. What am I beholding? Same eye, same nose, same face, everything was copied. The only difference was the age. I was dumbfounded and speechless seeing Naina in her school uniform.
  • Yes, Baboojee. I am Siana. She replied.
  • Do you want an Ice Cream? I asked her still with a bewildered eyes.
  • No, Baboojee, It’s forbidden here to receive anything from a stranger. She replied respectfully with a bit of hesitation and ran away.
Meanwhile, the gatekeeper reached me to confirm the reason for my visit and to whom I want to meet.

I handed over my V Card to him and requested him to inform the Principal Miss. Puspita Nair.

Going through my V Card, the eyes of the gatekeeper widened and he immediately saluted me and offered a chair and informed the Principal immediately about my arrival.

He was extremely sorry, not to recognise me though informed by the management about my arrival in advance and did not expect me on foot without any companion and frill.

Within no time the Principal, a lady of about 45yrs arrived along with other staff of management and greeted me warmly. Soon we were in the chamber of the Principal.

After a few formalities and pleasantries I liked to have a formal visit to the school campus before coming to any conclusion. All were quite impressed with my simplicity and behavior and interaction with them. They did not expect the Chairperson of the multinational Malhotra Foundation and the General Manager of a US based MNC so simple in attire and behaviour.

They escorted me to the school campus. I was amazed. It reminded me of the old Shantiniketan Campus. It was a campus of 10acs with natural surroundings enriched with large varieties of flora and fauna. I was really impressed with that.

On returning to the Principal office I met her again. She ran to me and clung to me. I was bewildered and caressed her head with love. The Principal was stunned.
  • Siana, do you know him? Principal asked.
  • Yes Ma'am. He is my Baboojee. She replied innocently.
I lifted her in my arms and took her along with me. The Principal along with others were surprised and looked at me, querying how I was related to her?

I smiled. “Don’t be puzzled. I am no way related to her. I just met her at the school gate a few hours ago.” I clarified.
  • By the way, who is this cutey? I enquired, still holding her in my arms and proceeding to the Principal office.
  • She is the daughter of one of our teaching staff, Reshma. She is a brilliant student and topper of Standard-III and she is also very good in extra curricular activities . The Principal conveyed.
After reaching the Principal office I put her down and she ran away again. Do not know why my heart was beating hard for her. I enquired about her father and came to know that Resma was a divorcee.

After going through the various records of the school I was fully satisfied and sanctioned 15K US $ for the core development of the school and 10 lifetime scholarships for the needy meritorious students with assurance that the amount may be increased anytime to any extent in future with the performance of the school. I made it clear, the lifetime scholarship means till the end of the education of a student,  home or abroad, all expenses including boarding also.

Then we went for lunch and my eyes were in search of her but she was nowhere. I did not know why I felt an emptiness in my heart for her. I got a call from Delhi and requested them to arrange a taxi for me to reach the airport. They were very happy to drop me at the airport with their office vehicle and I flew to Delhi with an etching heart. But before leaving I requested the Principal to inform me personally if anything Siana needed at present or in future and I want her to adopt and handover her my personal number.

Time and tides wait for none. Two years passed. I was like before. Alcoholic and workaholic. Baby Siana was out of my mind completely as out of sight. I got a call from India from an unknown number. I missed the call as I was a little busy. When I became free it was too late and as per IST it was about 1.30AM. I sent a sorry message to the caller and requested for a text or voice message on my answering machine.

Next day I received a voice message. It was from Puspita, the Principal of Puducherry Aravinda school wants to talk with me regarding Siana the cutey. I felt like I had a heart stroke then.
  • Oh Siana! How are you?
My heart throbbed again. I was unable to control myself. Did not feel necessary to call back Puspita, straight flew to India to meet Siana.

Reached Puducherry restlessly and  phoned Puspita about my arrival and she was very happy to receive me in her office. Siana was already present there. Seeing me she rushed and jumped to me in no time and I held her in my arms. She garlanded her hands in my neck and started showering kisses all over my face unaware of her Principal and others reminding me something and pushing my memory backward. I embraced her tightly.

She burst into tears. Started hitting slowly on my shoulders alternatively with her tiny fists.
  • Baboojee, where you have been for so many days. Mama was not talking with me. They took her to hospital. They are not allowing me to meet her. I am quite alone here. She went on narrating with sobs.
I was unable to understand anything. I managed to make her down, held her cheeks in my both hands and kissed her lightly on her forehead and on her talking eyes.
  • My baby doll. I am here only for you. Everything will be alright. I am going nowhere without your permission. Will you please allow me to talk to your Principal, your highness. I kneeled down in front of her and bowed my head.
She laughed, forgetting her cry, showed me her thumb in positive turned back and was out jumping happily. What a cute innocent baby. Her parents should be proud of her.

As soon as she was out, I asked the Principal about her mother.
  • About 10 or11 years back Siana’s mother Reshma applied for teachership in their school. Siana was in her womb then. Knowing her a divorcee and seeing her tender age the management was reluctant to appoint her. She looked at me then. God knows, what was in her face I convinced the management to appoint her taking her whole responsibility. I am a widow having no kids. Most probably I saw my daughter in her, who died when she was 8yrs old.
  • Initially she was with me and gave birth to Siana there. She was very good at her work and was too jovial. She was the most popular teacher in the school. The management was very happy with her and allowed her free lodging and boarding inside the campus and also bear all the expenses of her child.
  • Since the last two years, I can remember just after your visit to our school I have noticed the change in her. She started being silent gradually. Lost her jovialness, went ill and finally last September just 20 days back she collapsed and lost her speech and failed to recognize others. She developed illusion, delusion as well as hallucination. Now she is in the asylum at Kanke on school management’s expense.
  • The management is very worried about Siana. She is very reluctant to reside with any of us. Being a girl and alone she may be misguided and misused by any notorious mind. Finally management is thinking of handing her over to the State Welfare Board which I did not want but helpless. So, I seek your help as per your last request.
My mind was out. I can realize the gravity of the situation. Siana is in great trouble. I went on pondering a solution. I enquired about her father. But, alas, the principal had no idea as never inquired about Reshma's past life. She only knew that she was a divorcee and destitute.

After analysing lots of alternatives finally I asked Puspita
  • Can I adopt her?
  • Why not? We do not know her father’s whereabouts. Her mother is in asylum, No known relatives of her. We can hand her over to the State Welfare Board and you can adopt her from there legally. But a little complicated and time taking process and God knows how Siana will react to that.
I was also helpless. How to help this little damsel in distress.I called my Indian legal counselor for advice. He answered promptly, if the child and management has no problem I can take Siana with me and can produce her on the errand of any legal agency. Though it is not a legal solution but can solve the problem for the time being.

I asked the management for the same through Puspita and they happily accepted the proposal that I will be the safest abode for her in this universe which reminded me of something pushing my memory backward.

I called Siana  and asked her whether she would like to stay with me. She instantly clung to me again and gave a peg on my cheek and nodded her head as her approval. I collected a few pairs of her clothing and bid bye to Puspita and the school and flew to New Delhi and then to Izatnagar, for Malhotra Mansion, my ancestral abode by road.

It was a long journey of about four and half hours. We drove on NH9,  had our lunch at Ghaziabad and reached Izatanagar by evening via Moradabad and Rampur. It was a quite pleasant climate. We were in the back seat and being tired Siana soon fell asleep, her head on my chest and hand around my waist reminding me something and pushing my memory backwards.

Being the winter season our Mansion was full of flora and fauna with its natural wild environment. Siana was quite amazed to see the grand palazzo. It was a two story building. Ground floor was used by the Malhotra Foundation and the top floor was for my use which was abandoned by me for a long time.

She asked me,

  • Whose mansion is this?
  • It is your baby. It's your dadaji's and you are going to stay here onwards. I answered.
  • And Mama? She asked innocently.
  • Soon she will join you after being released from the hospital. I had nothing to say other than this.
Rosy, my housekeeper, motherly to me, was quite astonished to see me. I was not there for years. Her family ran to me and all were very happy to see me. All were very inquisitive to know about Siana and I was about to tell everything about her but I stopped myself and simply answered,
  • She is Siana, my daughter and she will stay with me onwards. Will you please arrange a room for her?

Rosy was astonished but she was very happy and started caressing her top to bottom with both her hands and finally embraced her murmuring,
  • My baby, where have you been for so long?

She took her hand and guided her to the top floor. I was not night halted there for decades but everything was quite intact as they were due to Rosy’s  and her family’s caring for me.

Nothing special in the evening. Siana became mingled with Rosy’s family and was very happy. At the dining table Rosy enquired about her mother and I answered the same as Siana. She also enquired about my staying duration there and I answered maybe a week or more. As soon as I get Siana’s visa I will fly to Chikago. Siana was silent throughout, enjoying her dinner and exploring the interior decoration and luxury of the mansion.

Night came, so was my loneliness. It has been hunting, hunting and hunting me since I left her. Don’t know her whereabouts, whether alive or dead but still her memory haunting me. I opened the cupboard for my mini bar for a sip..

“No..” someone screamed. I looked here and there in searching eyes. None other than me was there. “No Siraj, no. You are not alone.” was my internal screaming. Closing the cupboard I sat on the bed pressing my ears tight with both my hands.

Did not know when I was flat on the bed. My eyes were opened feeling someone's hand on my head. It was Siana caressing my hair sitting by my side. She smiled at me, seeing my eyes open.

  • Baboojee, do you have a headache? Will I massage your head? Saying so, she started pressing my forehead and temples with her soft little hand.

I was about to cry out of bewilderment. I pulled her to my chest, kissed all over her face madly and embarrassed her tight.
  • Siana, my baby. Where have you been so long? I missed you a lot. I said.
  • Me too Baboojee.. She cooed, rubbing her face all over my chest like a kitten and holding me tight, reminding me something and pushing my memory back.

Naina, Naina, Naina, why are you hunting me? Why can’t you leave me alone? You are so cruel, merciless. Have pity on me please. I told myself silently.
  • Siana, my child. Are you scared? I asked her.
  • Yes Baboojee, in that room. It is so big and I was alone there. She replied.
  • Are you feeling alone and scared now? I enquired again.
  • No Baboojee. I am in my safest adobe with you. She answered innocently and I went back again.

Did not know when we slept. My wrist watch started vibrating. I felt a weight on my morning hardness. I opened my eyes. It was going to be dawn. Her head was on my chest. Half of her body was glued to me. My body was clutched by one of her slender arms. She was sleeping peacefully with her bended thigh and calf on my crotch. What a pleasant feeling. I pulled her nearer and closed my eyes again.

Suddenly, I came to my senses. Oh! My God. It is not her but my baby. I shifted slightly and pushed her leg slowly down from my crotch but she clutched me hard again pushing my memory back again.

I caressed her head and cheek lovingly and embarrassed her tighter. This baby is going to kill me, pushing back my memories of her. I was afraid of breakdown but still happy, I am not alone..

Lotus buds were unfurled. She looked straight into my eyes and smiled. Moved slightly up and gave a peck on my cheek and cooed,
  • Good Morning Baboojee.
I was bewildered. The best morning wish I had. I Kissed her back.
  • Good Morning Beta. I am not your Baboojee. I am your Papajee. Call me Papa. I kissed her eyes.
  • OK. Papa. She went down to the washroom.
Nothing special in the morning. I called my travel agent at New Delhi and asked to arrange a Passport and a Dependent Visa for Siana as soon as possible. She asked for a legal document showing her dependency on me and assured me of the Visa within seven days. For Passport he advised me to apply online and to book a slot at the nearest verification center and after verification he can facilitate the rest process as soon as possible utilizing his resources.

I sensed a great problem ahead. I do not have any relation with her other than compassion. How to show her dependency on me legally. I was in a great dilemma. I can’t stay in India for more days, can’t leave her alone here and can’t take her with me without a Visa. I got fixed.

I called my legal counselor again. Hearing everything he said,
  • You can’t take her abroad anyway. She was no way related to you. She is underage, and cannot be accepted as a housemaid. Can’t get study Visa or tourist Visa.
  • Yes, only hope was there. If in her birth certificate there was no father’s name only mother’s name then we can manipulate that.
I was quite hopeless and helpless. With very little hope asked Puspita for her Birth Certificate. Within no time she searched for the same from her quarter and mailed the photocopy to me. I reluctantly forward that mail to my agent and asked him to contact the legal counsellor.

I called my secretary Richa and instructed her to apply for Siana’s Passport online and she asked for DOB. I simply forwarded her the mail from Puspita and later informed me that the verification was tomorrow at the GPO which was just a furlong distance from our mansion.

I was quite hopeless and tense. Seeing me in tension Siana came to me and sat on my lap and gave me a peck on my cheeks. Holding my face in her tiny hands she queried,
  • What happened Papa? Why are you so tense? Am I bothering you? Please say, All is well. Everything will be set right. By God, believe me and touched her neck with her hand.
My laughter burst out at her innocent queries. All my tension is in the air. I embraced her tightly and exploded,
  • Yes, yes my sweet heart, you are my tension. Can’t leave you, can’t live without you. You are the pupil of my eyes. I can fight with the entire world for you. I will smash all the Laws if necessary.
  • All is well. I shouted.
Next Day I asked Siana to get ready for her Passport verification and she said
  • I am ready Papa.
  • Sweety, please have a better dress. I requested her.
  • This is my best one. She answered innocently.
I was ashamed of myself. She was with a few pairs of dresses. I asked Richa to accompany us and start my Audi. Richa was in back and she was in front with her head on my shoulder and hand on my waist. Oh! God, this girl is driving me back.

I parked the car in a shopping mall and requested  Richa to purchase her all the necessaries of a girl of her age from hair pin to sandal in ample quantity and waited for them leisurely at the cash counter.

After the shopping we went to the GPO for her passport verification and there was no crowd. The verification officer asked for her original documents along with copies for verification. I was stunned. How could I forget that? I had every document at the mansion other than her birth certificate.

I was about to return, I encountered a gentleman and he greeted me. After a few pleasantries he asked me the reason for my visit. I explained to him the reason and my problem. He went to the verification counter and the person behind the counter left his seat and greeted him. He introduced me,
  • Mr. Rajesh, meet Mr. Malhotra, the chairperson of Malhotra Foundation. He doesn't have the originals of his daughter’s birth certificate. Bring the copy of that to me, I will endorse that.
  •  No problem Sir. It’s OK. I will endorse those. Nothing to be worried Sir. He said politely with respect.
I looked at Siana and said “Hurrah… All is well.” Obviously silently. After fulfilling the formalities we returned to the mansion and on the way Siana inquired about the car.
  • Is it your Papa?
  • No sweety. It is yours. You will drive in it when you will be in higher classes. I replied.
She was very happy with her big shoppings and immediately unpacked everything reaching her room. Immediately she changed into a black three piece tight suit. With a high heel and ponytail she cat walked to me and asked,
  • How am I looking Papa?
I looked at her and was stunned. What a transformation? Mere change in attire completely changed her personality. Can’t believe that a 10yrs girl was standing in front of me. Wide hips, slender legs, ample chest, no I can’t describe the beauty of my child. Simply can say, a 10yrs cute baby was transformed into a 20yrs young lusty girl. If she was not my child and of my age I can’t restrain myself mauling her though I am not a moron.
  • Superb my darling superb. But I want my cute baby. I smiled.
She could not understand and went on displaying her shoppings and explaining the specialty of those and I went on enjoying her innocent girlish talking.
  • How to rear this motherless innocent kid. Oh! God. Help me. Have your mercy on me rearing this cute baby. I proclaimed myself.

Yes. If she attains puberty, his way of looking at that beauiful angel would be definitely different.   Angry
