Arjun had reached the resort villa a full hour earlier than the others. The caretaker, an elderly man in a faded uniform, had handed him the keys.
After the man left, Arjun dropped his bag in the smaller room on the right side, washed his face with cold water, and came back out to the deck. He sat on one of the wooden lounge chairs, phone in hand, scrolling through messages without really reading any of them. The night air still carried the damp smell of the short evening rain that had fallen an hour ago. Every few minutes he checked the time. The silence of the resort felt heavier because he was alone.
When the main gate finally clicked open and a pair of headlights swept across the gravel driveway, he stood up at once. The car stopped. Priya stepped out first from the front passenger seat. She was wearing the shimmery black saree with the tiny lacy blouse, deep neck with pencil high heels, her hair slightly loose and wind-blown from the long drive, a small black sling bag hanging from her shoulder. Rehan climbed out from the back seat carrying two travel bags, and Sahil followed with the remaining luggage and a packet of snacks.

Arjun walked down the three steps toward them.
“Finally. I was starting to think you three got lost on the way.”
Priya gave him a tired but warm smile and adjusted the strap of her bag.
“Sorry beta, traffic was really bad after we left the main highway. And then these two kept arguing about which side road would be faster. We also stopped once for tea at that small place near the hills. You know how these boys are.”
Rehan dropped the bags near the entrance steps and stretched his arms above his head with a loud sigh.
Sahil grinned while locking the car with the remote: “Arjun bhai, don’t fully believe the traffic story. Traffic was normal most of the way. We just decided to take the longer scenic route. Proper slow drive. Windows down, soft music, cool breeze. Your mom was actually enjoying it more than us.”
Sahil further added - “Haan yaar. Almost felt like a proper date drive. We even made Aunty sit in the front seat for some time so she could feel the night air properly. She was laughing at our stupid jokes the whole way. At one point Rehan started singing and she joined for two lines.”
Arjun raised an eyebrow and looked between the two of them.
Arjun: “Date? What nonsense are you both talking all of a sudden?”
Priya quickly waved her hand and started walking toward the villa entrance, her sandals making soft sounds on the stone path.
Priya: “Ignore them, Arjun. They’re in that useless teasing mood since the car. I only told them to stop at one viewpoint for five minutes because the lights of the valley looked nice from there. That’s all. Now come inside, I’m really tired and my legs are stiff.”
They all entered the living room together. The AC was already running at a comfortable temperature, the warm yellow lights making the wooden furniture look richer. Priya sat on the large L-shaped sofa, slipped off her sandals, and began rubbing the soles of her feet lightly with both hands. Rehan and Sahil sat opposite her on the matching two-seater. Arjun remained standing for a moment near the glass doors that opened to the pool before finally sitting on the single armchair.
Rehan leaned back into the cushion and looked around the room.
Priya: “Arjun, be honest. When you reached early, did you already check every room properly? These days it's not safe, especially villas like this”
Arjun shook his head.
“Yeah all good I guess, the old caretaker was saying this is the safest place”
Sahil stretched his long legs out in front of him and crossed them at the ankles, asked "Ye caretaker yoga mat dega (whill this caretaker provide yoga mats?)"
Arjun "Why?"
Sahil: “Just asking yaar. Your mom was saying in the car that she wants to wake up early tomorrow and do her full yoga near the pool while the sun is still soft. We were thinking we should also join her… for fitness, you know. Sitting in car for so long makes the body stiff.”
Priya shot both of them a sharp look while still massaging her foot.
Priya giggling: “Don’t start your bakwas right now. Arjun, really ignore these two. They’re only trying to get a reaction out of you and me.”
Rehan smiled in that innocent way he always used when he was about to push further.
Rehan: “Aunty, we’re only saying the truth. You looked completely fresh even after four hours of driving. Most people look half-dead by the time they reach. We both told her also in the car - Priya Aunty, aap toh bilkul thake nahi lag rahe. Skin glow kar raha hai, bilkul fresh.’”
Sahil nodded in agreement and added, “Haan, I said the same thing. Other aunties after such a long drive would be complaining about backache, headache, everything. You still look… energetic. Even the way you walked from the car to the steps, no tiredness in the body. Posture still straight.”
Arjun’s voice came out flatter than usual - “Okay, enough now. You’re both starting to sound weird. Talk about something else.”
Priya stood up from the sofa, smoothed the front of her kurti with both hands, and picked up her small bag.
“I’m going to freshen up and sleep. Long day, long drive. You boys order whatever you want from the menu if you’re hungry. I’ve already spoken to the owner on the phone. He said the caretaker can send sandwiches or Maggi or whatever till eleven. Good night, and don’t fight.”
She walked toward the master bedroom on the left side of the living room. At the door she paused, turned her head slightly, and looked back once.
“Arjun, don’t stay up too late arguing with these two. And you both - behave properly tonight. No more date-date and glowing-skin dialogues. I can still hear everything from inside.”
The door closed softly behind her. The soft click of the latch seemed louder than it should have in the quiet villa.
For several seconds the living room stayed completely silent except for the low steady hum of the AC and the distant mechanical sound of the pool filter outside. Rehan reached for a cold water bottle from the tray on the centre table, twisted the cap open, and took a long sip.
Rehan finally spoke, his voice casual - “She’s really tired, haan? Or just wanted to escape our talking?”
Sahil leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and looked toward the closed bedroom door - “Looks like a bit of both. She was quiet in the last half hour of the drive also.”
Arjun stared at the two of them, his jaw already tight.
Arjun: “What is wrong with you two today? First the whole ‘date’ dialogue in front of her, then the fitness talk, then the glowing skin and posture comments. Just stop it. It’s not funny anymore.”
Rehan raised both hands in a mock surrender gesture.
Rehan: “Arre bhai, lighten up a little. We’re only joking around. Your mom is cool, that’s the only reason we can talk like this in front of her. Most mothers would have given us a tight slap or a long lecture by now. She just laughs, tells us to shut up, and walks away. That’s rare.”
Sahil kept his voice lower: “True. I’ve been to other friends’ houses many times. Their mothers get awkward if we even look at them for more than two seconds. They start adjusting their pallu or finding some excuse to leave the room. Your mom? She holds eye contact properly, even smiles. That’s different at her age.”
Arjun rubbed his forehead with one hand.
“Can both of you talk about something else? Cricket, college, the project, anything normal.”
Rehan took another slow sip of water and glanced sideways at Sahil - “Okay, changing topic. Sahil, you were telling me earlier about that '. guy in your society… the one who does night duty at the gate.”
Sahil’s mouth curved into a small half-smile - “Haan. Imran. Around forty-five, solid build, watchman type. Sells weed to a few people in the building also. People there say '. men have more stamina. I don’t know if it’s true or just talk that goes around, but some of the married women in the society… they whisper things when their husbands are not around.”
Rehan turned his head slightly toward Arjun - “You’ve heard that kind of dialogue also, no? That ***** women, especially the ones who have been with only one man for many years, sometimes get curious about that. More stamina, more control, thicker… you know what I mean.”
![[Image: HN8MFPya0AE-Fpf?format=jpg&name=medium]](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/HN8MFPya0AE-Fpf?format=jpg&name=medium)
Arjun’s face hardened immediately - “What the hell are you both talking about suddenly? Why bring that up here?”
Sahil kept his tone almost casual, as if discussing the weather.
“Just general talk, bhai. Nothing personal against anyone. But think about it logically for a minute. Your mom is still very fit. Daily yoga, body is tight, no extra fat anywhere. If someone like that older '. guy ever… hypothetically… got close to her, the difference in stamina alone might surprise her. Longer sessions. More patience. Some women start liking that after a point. They don’t say it openly, but the body reacts differently.”
Rehan nodded slowly and spoke in a quieter voice.
“I’ve noticed the way some aunties look at those older working-class guys. Not the clean, polite college boys like us. The ones who have rough hands, smell a little of cigarette smoke and sweat, speak less, look more. Different kind of energy. Your mom has that quiet look sometimes when she’s lost in thought… like she’s thinking something she won’t say out loud in front of anyone.”
Arjun stood up from the armchair, the legs of the chair scbanging lightly against the floor.
“I’m going to my room. You both are crossing every limit now. This is my mother you’re talking about.”
Sahil didn’t raise his voice. He stayed seated and spoke calmly.
“Sit for two more minutes, Arjun. We’re not saying anything bad about Aunty. Just observing things that are already visible. She’s still young in body. Forty-two is nothing these days. And the way she walks… that slow, controlled hip movement after she finishes her yoga in the morning. Even you must have noticed it at home when she crosses the living room.”
Rehan’s voice dropped further, almost to a murmur.
“Yesterday when she bent down to pick the remote from the floor in your living room, that kurti went up a little from the back. Clean, smooth view for a second. Not that we were staring on purpose, but it was hard not to notice. Body is so firm.”
Arjun’s hands curled into loose fists at his sides. His voice came out tighter, "Shut up. Both of you. Right now.”
Sahil continued in the same low, even tone, as if Arjun had not spoken.
“I’m only saying facts that people discuss. '. guys, especially the older ones who do physical work every day, they take time. They don’t finish in five or ten minutes like us college types. Some women… especially ***** women who have only known one man for fifteen or twenty years… they start wanting that after a while. Longer, deeper, sometimes a bit more force. The body gets used to one rhythm for years, then suddenly feels something else.”
Rehan added, still speaking softly,
“And your mom… she has that exact kind of look sometimes. When she was sitting in the front seat today during the drive, she kept adjusting her dupatta every few minutes, but every time she laughed the fabric shifted and the shape of her chest was clear under the kurti. It was actually hard to keep looking only at the road.”
Arjun’s breathing had become slightly heavier.
“I’m serious. Stop talking about her like she’s some random woman from the neighbourhood.”
Sahil leaned back against the sofa cushions and crossed his arms.
“Okay, last point and then we stop for tonight. Just imagine hypothetically if someone like that watchman type, Imran, ever got the chance with her… the stamina difference alone would be completely new for her. She might even ask for more once she feels how long he can last. These fit yoga mothers… once they cross a certain line, they don’t go back easily. The body is already trained for flexibility, balance, and control. It learns new things fast.”
Rehan spoke even softer, almost as if sharing a secret.
“And the way she says ‘good night’ sometimes… that soft, low voice that stays in the ear. Makes a person think what else that same mouth can do if she ever decides to stop being only ‘Aunty’ for a few hours.”
Arjun turned without saying another word. He walked across the living room toward his bedroom door, opened it, and shut it harder than necessary. The sound of the latch clicking echoed once through the quiet villa and then faded.
Inside the living room Sahil and Rehan remained seated in the dim light. The only illumination now came from the soft blue glow of the pool lights filtering through the large glass doors.
After a long pause Sahil spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper - “He knows something. Did you see his face properly when we mentioned the stamina thing and Imran’s name?”
Rehan nodded slowly.
“Haan. He’s not stupid. He’s been watching her differently since the last few weeks at home. The way he goes quiet when she walks past, the way he notices small things. But he won’t open his mouth. Not yet. Too many things fighting inside his head.”
Sahil: “Tomorrow morning when she comes out for yoga near the pool… we should both be there early. Just sitting on the chairs, watching. No need to say anything extra in front of him. Let the silence do the work.”
Rehan’s mouth curved into a slow smile in the blue half-light, “Obviously. And if Imran’s name comes up again in front of Arjun later… we push only a little more. Slowly. No sudden jump. Keep it light until he either explodes or accepts it.”
Sahil stood up, stretched his arms above his head until his shoulders cracked, and yawne, “I’m going to sleep also. Long drive, eyes are heavy. But keep the door of your room slightly open. Just in case she comes out for water in the middle of the night. Or in case he comes back out.”
Rehan also got to his feet and picked up his water bottle, “Done. And if Arjun comes back out for any reason tonight, we act completely normal. No more talk about any of this until morning.”
They switched off the remaining table lamps one by one. The living room fell into deeper darkness, broken only by the cool blue light coming from the pool outside. Both of them walked to their separate bedrooms. The villa became completely quiet except for the soft, steady mechanical sound of the pool filter and the occasional high-pitched call of a night insect near the windows.
In his room Arjun lay on his back on the bed, staring at the dark ceiling. The earlier words kept looping in his head without permission - '. stamina, ***** women, his mother’s body after yoga, the way they had described her laugh, her walk, her voice, the brief flash of skin when she bent down. He turned onto his side, pulled the thin blanket up to his shoulder, and closed his eyes, but sleep did not come for a long time.
Outside, the resort night continued, thick, still, and heavy with everything that had been left unsaid.
After the man left, Arjun dropped his bag in the smaller room on the right side, washed his face with cold water, and came back out to the deck.
