Chapter 49

Atul

“Anvita told us you were gone to Pune.”
Pradeep told Atul.
“Yeah. I didn’t think I would make it. Luckily I did.”
“Thank you so much for coming, bro.”
Parthiv, Prithvi's brother said.
“I haven’t told Anvita that I am coming. She was not happy when I hinted I might not make it.”
Atul revealed.
“Wow. She is in for some surprise!”
However, Atul soon learnt that he was the one in for a surprise. Atul was led to the welcome hall and was served with drinks. He met Parthiv’s family and friends.
As the initial rush of meeting new people was subsided Atul phoned Anvita. The ring went unanswered.
“She must be with the girls doing the makeup.”
Somebody suggested to him.
An hour had passed since his arrival and he still could not get a glimpse of Anvita. He asked many, and everyone seemed concerned about it but nobody knew exactly where she was. Pradeep had led him to the program hall and provided him with a place among the front rows. Atul looked around the crowd enjoying the event, but couldn’t spot the face he had been dying for.
The music was impressive. The crowd was dense, and they cheered for each number. Atul was getting increasingly restless in his seat.
Pradeep was ready to help him.
“Did you try to call her?”
“She’s not picking up.”
“Okay, no problem. I’ll send someone to look for her. I think she’s with Prithvi's friends. Some girls from his college have also come.”

Pradeep returned to him after some time.
“Your car is in the parking; her phone is also in the car. So she must be here only, right? The crowd is large and that’s why it’s difficult but she’s going to join you soon, dear.”
He assured.
“Where is Prithvi?”
Atul queried.
“He’s very busy with his team.”
Pradeep said.
“We have a power supply problem due to some unexpected issue. We were all scared if the program would be interrupted but fortunately, we managed to make alternative options just in time. Prithvi is busy coordinating with them. I will tell him to meet you. You can ask him in case you need anything. Please do not hesitate.”
“No, it’s okay. I was just asking. The arrangements look very good.”
Atul said.
The sudden downpour in the early evening had caused an unexpected power breakdown. Many of the decorative light works were still being fixed as the main supply was gone. There was a state of mayhem going on behind the shine and sheen of the wedding’s festive mood, Atul could tell. A lot of friends and well-wishers of the host family had thrown helping hands to make sure the music program went on uninterrupted and was most enjoyable, especially to the female audience.
Pradeep’s assurance turned out to be futile even after fifteen minutes. Atul walked out of the hall and met Prithvi's friends. One of them, Pawan, knew Anvita in person and he recognised Atul as well.
“She went to your house.”
He informed.
“We were looking for an inverter and she said she could help.”
Atul had an inverter, purchased after the fire incident at his apartment complex a few months ago.
Prithvi, Mukund and two others are gone with her.
“When did they go? I’ve been here since 8 o’clock.”

Pawan said.

“Where is Anvita?”
Pawan asked.
“She’s also coming. What happened?”
Atul felt relieved and only then he realised how nervous he had become. He couldn’t really understand why there was so much drama happening around him at the moment. It was a wedding eve; a highly enjoyable musical night was on; everyone was enjoying with the exception of just one person; him. An inexplicable dread that had mounted him was finally eluding him.
Finally.
“Can I talk to Anvita?”
Atul asked. He could sense an upsurge of excitement in his own voice.
“She is not in the car. She went back to her house, perhaps they forgot something, I don’t know. Prithvi said it's nothing and they are coming.”
“That's alright.”
Atul said quietly.
That's not alright, damn! That's not good news! Only Atul could say. For one moment, he wished he was just imagining the whole thing. They didn't say she stayed back with Prithvi. But, hey, what?
Why did they stay back? What’s going on? Questions began to arise and tension began to mount, once again. All of a sudden an unexpected fear began to shape up in his mind, and it shaped his mind.
A night that was high on excitement; a woman who had been a dream of many; a boy who was aching to be her lover; a home that was lonely; if a devil was in command, it could be his favourite moment. All it might take was a momentary slip, and the outcome could be irreversible. Atul knew it in a second.
He had lost his patience and excitement altogether.
Atul borrowed a bike from someone he had befriended.
"A friend wants to meet me urgently. I'll be back in a few minutes."
He experienced a hard time to pretend all is well with him and his world. He stuck to the shortest route and fastest gear, and in thirty minutes he was stepping into the Darshan Apartment complex. The first thing his eyes fell at was Prithvi’s bike, in the parking lot.
Atul’s heartbeats began to rise. He checked his watch. Forty minutes. And they are still inside. The realisation only helped him fall further deeper into his scary suspicions. But his mind was split in opposite ways. At one moment he was terrified of the doubts about the unthinkable becoming true. And the next moment he was ashamed of his dirty thoughts; having doubted his wife’s integrity. It was not the first time he was having doubts about her, suspecting the worst, but the truth had proved him wrong, every time. Perhaps I am doubtful because of her beauty, or my insecurity. I'm insecure, as Rajat once told me. He thought.
He knew his doubts were not going to be true, and in a few seconds, Anvita would be standing in front of him, laughing at him, having pulled a clever prank at him.
Atul’s conscience was split into two. His optimism ruled ninety-nine per cent of it but the pessimism of one per cent was made him go weak at his knees. He felt both nervous and powerless when he stood inside the elevator. And when he reached in front of his apartment he questioned himself. Should I really intrude? What if they are doing some chit chat and what if they are already walking out of the house? What will I say why I am here?
He was not going to admit the truth for he was not so shameless. There was no justification for him to borrow someone’s bike and rush home to check what his wife doing with her friend who was also her former student.
Prithvi’s dad had assured him many times. “Prithvi will take care of her. Don’t worry, my friend.”
How many times did he assure you? And you still came running here. To do what? And why?
There was no justification.
Atul’s eye fell at the opposite door. Yes! An idea struck him instantly and he spent no time thinking.
He unlocked the number lock and sneaked into Rajat’s apartment. He closed the door quietly and hurried to the balcony. He climbed on the pabangt and leaned to the balcony of his apartment hall. The gown Anvita was wearing was intact. She seemed to have checked it to perfection and walked to the hall. Atul waited at the balcony, allowing them to leave. The light in the apartment was off, without much delay. Atul returned to Rajat’s house and went to the bedroom balcony.
