Chapter 31

Anvita

“Back home after late night date, huh?”
Rajat stood in front of her.
“Move away.”
Anvita said, trying to sound stern.
“Who was that?”
“Who?”
“In the car.”
“A friend.”
“But he’s too old to be your friend, dear. Okay, I will find out. I think I should ask Atul.”
Anvita felt her knees weak, suddenly.
“Then I will tell Mohit about you and Neeti.”
She threatened.
“Wow. So that’s it; me and Neeti; you and that man; so that’s it. I got it. Cool.”
Anvita regretted her aggression.
“No. It’s not like that. I am not a dirty pig like you.”
Her voice rose in sync with her anger.
“Don't shout. There are people here. They will wake up.”
He switched on the light near her door and studied her closely.
“Hey. How’s that your lips are so...mmm... don't deny it now. I can see it was a hot one.”
Anvita was losing her ground. She placed her hand on the door for support and looked at him helplessly. She wanted to push him away and run inside her home. But her legs were frozen. Or they were too weak to even walk past him. She stood there like a failed one and let him observe her lips until he was satisfied.
I will kill this man, one day.
“Okay. You go and rest. We’ll see tomorrow. Good night Anvita.”
Rajat said in the end.
She walked past him with her head down and opened her door.

Anvita stood in front of the full mirror and studied herself. Rajat was right. It was too obvious to miss. Her lips were a mess. Smacked and spoilt. She remembered how Shreyas was sucking them. It was so good then. Now it was time to be paid back.
She went to the shower and cried aloud.
Oh god. What have I done?
Her world was suddenly gloomy. The grim reality took over her senses and wiped out her illusion of happiness.
Guilt-ridden and disheartened, she could not sleep that night.
She remembered Atul.
What have I done to you?
What a foolish person I have been. She cursed herself. I should have known the danger. I should have returned home by a cab.
 
Anvita spent the whole night cooking up stories to tell Atul; stories that must make what Rajat would tell him appear normal. But it was not possible. One lie will lead to another, and another, and Atul will find out. No way, out of this.

By morning she came to conclusion; only Rajat can save her. He must be kept silent. She was hopeful of that because she had his greatest secret.

The doorbell rang at nine o’clock in the morning. As expected, it was Rajat.
Anvita let him inside and closed her door.
Rajat walked to the aquarium and observed the fish. His fish. And he turned to Anvita.
“Let’s sit and talk, Anvita.”
He sat on one couch and she sat down on the next one. He stared at her and she could not really face him.
Be strong, Anvita.
She looked up.
“What do you want?”
“Who was that?”
He asked immediately.
She took a moment to reply.
“It was a friend.”
“A friend. Does Atul know?”
“What do you think?”
“I can think a lot about it. But I don't think he’s just a friend. Your lips still look different, Anvita. You can't hide it.”
Anvita felt restlessness growing inside her. She wanted to run to the mirror and have a closer look at her lips again.
No. It was alright in the morning. Wasn’t it?
“I don't care what you imagine or believe; it’s none of my business. And whoever I hang out with, it shouldn’t be your business as well.”
She said bitterly.
“Come on, Anvita. Why are you behaving so angry with me? I have never told anything to put you in danger. Did I? I never meant any harm to you.”
“Then why are you here? Why are you so worried about my personal relations?”
“You know I like you a lot, don't you? I really like you. I will never do anything that will ruin your life. You can count on me. All I seek is friendship with you.”
“What type of friendship?”
“Where is Atul? Pune?”
“Yes.”
“He’ll come tomorrow only, right?”
Anvita didn't say anything.
“Are you planning your next date tonight?”
He asked.
“What! No.” Anvita blurted.
“Then you are going to be alone tonight. Why not we spent some time here discussing...”
“No. No!”
Anvita jumped up and pointed to the door.
“I knew it coming, you! Get out, now!”
She yelled. He did not move an inch and kept staring her. His nonchalance angered her further.
“Get out, please.”
Anvita couldn't really understand why she sounded so weak despite anger. And she hated her for saying 'please'.
“Okay. I think you are really pissed off. You are not ready to talk now. I'm going to give you some time for now. But after that, I want you to give me some time. I won’t do anything to harm you, you can trust me. If you don’t, Atul will surely know what you have been doing to him. Even if you scream to the whole world about what I am doing with Neeti, I will make sure nobody believes it. Because I and Neeti together can deny it. But in your case, you will be forced to bring in your man to prove me wrong. That alone will have unwanted consequences, Anvita.”
“Why are you doing this to me? You have Neeti already. Has she stopped sleeping with you?”
Anvita’s voice trembled in anguish. She was on the verge of tears. Rajat got up instantly.
“Hey. You are mistaken. I am not looking for Neeti’s replacement. No way!”
Anvita looked at him in disbelief.
“In fact, I have stopped seeing her. Believe me; I am not trying to get into your pants. That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what is it?”
“I told you. Just friendship. You've been avoiding me whenever I came close to you. You never talk to me. You don't even smile at me. It cringes me and makes me feel like a monster. I need to change that.”
He paused as though to ensure she is eating all his words.
“I want you to shake my hands when I hold it forward.”
He forwarded his hand. Anvita hesitated a moment, and slowly gave in.
“Are we good, now?”
“But don't come to me tonight.”
“Sure, I was just saying it to test you, Anvita. I have no plan to disturb your sleep. You can trust me. Actually, I am not going to be here tonight.”
She nodded. A sense of relief brought back life to her face though she had no plan to trust him.

When Rajat was gone, she sunk into the couch like a dead body. One thing was sure; if he wanted, he could have forced himself upon her. She would not be able to resist him much. He could drag her into bed and...
Tears rolled down Anvita’s cheeks.
What a fool I was!
 
Phone rang. It was Shreyas. He wanted to talk about evening plan.
“I can't come, Shreyas. I am not feeling good.”
“What happened? Shall I come?”
“No. Don't do that.”
“Is there anything wrong? I mean...”
“Everything’s wrong Shreyas. I shouldn’t have come with you yesterday. We got too close. I did things I shouldn’t have done,” she cried. “Why are you making my life hell, Shreyas? I’ve never done such things to me. I’ve never cheated on my Atul. I can't think of it. I can't bear it. I...”
“No. You did not cheat him, not yet. Anvi...”
He tried to explain.
“Shut up. Don't try to fool me with your reasons anymore. And don't call me Anvi. I am Anvita. That’s my name...that’s my name...”
She wept. “I know what I did, Shreyas. If it wasn’t cheating, come here when Atul is home and talk about it openly. Can you do that?”
There was silence from the other side of the phone.
“See. This is it. I don't know how I will face him.”
“Anvita. I understand. We did wrong things. But we did not to it purposefully. It just happened. And we have no plan to repeat it. We were just friends. We are not lovers. That’s what I meant; you haven’t cheated on him. Nothing is lost. The love, the trust, the care, everything is still there. All you need to do is to forget the incident. Look forward. Focus on the positive things, Anvita. Do you understand what I am saying? It will heal. Everything is gonna be alright.”
His words sank deep inside her and though it took time, in the end she felt them soothing.
She believed him. She and Shreyas were not lovers.
I love Atul. Atul only. Everything else is temporary.
"The only thing, for now, is to keep the little secret between us. It is very easy."
Shreyas said in the end.
He was right. The only thing that’s important is not being caught.
Anvita assured herself. She breathed normally. Heartbeats were usual. A weight was off her chest now. She slept through the afternoon.

Anvita woke up hearing the doorbell. It was six o’clock. She got up and walked to the front door. It was Rajat. A shiver passed down her spine. She could not smile.
“I am not here to disturb you, Anvita. I just wanted to check if you are alright.”
“I am alright.”
Her voice was normal.
“I will tell Atul if he calls me. The other day he was tensed and I had no idea about the blackout and your ordeal. I felt very sad that day. Okay. Bye. See you.”
He said and left.
Anvita was now able to believe him better.

Monday it was different for Anvita in the office.
Shashank called her into his cabin and spoke fondly. He made her sit in the chair in front of him and shared a coffee. He asked about her family. He spoke about how hard it is to find success in the modular cubicles of offices like Teckpo.
“Hard work is an important factor. But it alone cannot help one. Hard work lets you survive here. There is something else, something extra; add to the hard work that takes one to the top; to the higher level. The difficult part is to figure it out because it is not the same thing for everyone. For a few, it is luck. But we cannot ride on luck. I don't know about you except one thing. That you have something that tells me you are destined to go up. I just want to remind you, that you must keep up your hard work. Keep learning. Never give in to the bad advice. How many proposals you’ve got until now?”
“What!”
Anvita was stunned.
“Anvita, you are a gorgeous young woman and a rookie. I know you will be approached by a lot of them. These men are fantasising about you; nurturing dreams of taking you into their bed. I want you to focus. Stay away from them all. If anybody persists, just inform me, okay? I have learnt your potential. I want you by my side, always, in all my future client meetings. Are we set?”
Shashank’s eyes were stuck at her lips as he spoke. Anvita felt he might be having an erection. The old man looked a happy, harmless one, and Anvita liked him.

When she reached home, Atul had already arrived. She fell into his arms and kissed him.
“I missed you.”
She meant it and she cried.
He kissed her back. As the kiss grew intense, she felt wanting more of him. His hands had wormed behind her and had begun to caress her ass. She was panting already and she licked around his face. She threw away her vanity bag and dropped down her knees, pulling down his boxer. And Atul watched in sheer unbelief, as she opened her mouth to let his hard member enter her. Later in the night, while they were making passionate love in the bed, Anvita spread her legs all the way and pulled him closer into her. He was still amused by her vigour.
“What happened to you, baby?”
“You have no idea how much I missed you. I’ve been alone. Where were you? Take me with you when you go on tour next time.”
“I will.”
He promised.
“I love you.”
“Me too...”
“I am all yours... only yours...”
She said and she believed it.
“Yes, baby. You are all mine....”
Atul whispered. Anvita felt complete. Atul was going faster all the way down and with a little groan, he shot his load into her.
“Aaah...”
He panted and rubbed his lips into her mouth. Anvita felt a tad of disappointment. She wished him to have stayed a little longer. She was already filled with her own juices. All she missed was an eruption. But she was still okay; she was in love. She hugged him tight and whispered his favourite words into his ears.

Next day Atul brought back the subject.
“You were damn good yesterday....with your lips. You totally surprised me.”
“I know.”
Anvita smiled innocently.
“I think I should thank Varun for that.”
“Varun?”
“The bet with him... he prompted to try it on me.”
“What if I had lost the bet?”
He laughed, “I knew you would win it. Otherwise, you wouldn’t...”
“What if I had lost it?”
"O my God! I can't think of... I think... mmm... We'll mix his drink and get him as drunk as Radhika and then we will run away."
Atul explained and she laughed, “that’s clever.”
“What would you have done, if you had lost?”
Atul asked when their laugh settled.
“I would have fainted, out of shock, the moment he pulled out his thing in front of me.”
She said but she knew she wouldn’t.
I would have looked at it with my both eyes. I would wrap my fingers around it. And perhaps I would have taken it in my mouth and let it glide deep into the back of my throat like I just did with you.
An image of Shreyas's erect penis bulging inside his pants flashed in her mind and it erased her smile.

On Friday, she was leaving office when Varun called her.
“I am near your office. Shall I pick you up?”
When she came down and waited for him, a black Mercedes Benz stopped in front of her. Its rear window glass came down and she saw an ugly face. Manjot.
“Waiting for someone?”
“No.”
She said without thinking.
“May I drop you?”
“No. Thanks.”
“Come on, allow me. I will drop you.”
“Where?”
“Wherever you say.”
“Why would you care?”
He smiled.
“Come. I want to talk to you.”
He opened the door.
“You are embarrassing me. I hope Mr Shashank isn’t watching this.”
She hesitated a moment and got inside. She quickly messaged Varun that she’s left as the car moved forward.
A moment later she noticed the driver. It was the man she had collided with, at Manjot’s office. He seemed to be totally ignorant of her, though.
A driver! She turned her eyes away from him, irritatingly.
Anvita sat silently and watched the luxurious interior of the car. Manjot turned to her and smiled.
“What’s happening in Teckpo, Anvita? Are you happy with them?”
“It’s good.”
“What is your boss saying about you? I’ve heard he’s happy about you for his deal success.”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“He said I brought him luck.”
“You did.”
He smiled. Anvita said nothing.
“You know what, Anvita, I’ve been wondering about meeting you again. I am impressed with you. Let’s work on it. You decide the day and I will arrange everything else.”
“I am sorry... I can't.”
He ignored her.
“I know of a restaurant at South Delhi. It serves great food, including seafood. Do you like seafood?”
“I told you I can't. I’m sorry...”
“You choose the day convenient to you; for lunch. It’ll take just a couple of hours. It will be solid entertainment, I promise you that.”
She stared at him.
“What do you say, Anvita?”
“Didn't you hear what I am saying? Are you deaf?”
She did not mince her words. Manjot blinked slowly.
“Didn't you notice that I am not taking your ‘no’ for an answer?”
His brooding eyes told her he meant his words. She felt eeriness creeping in. She looked at the driver and his nonchalance escalated her misery. She turned her eyes to the road in front of them and saw a metro station getting closer.
“I want to get down here. Stop the car... please...stop there.”
She raised her voice frantically.
Manjot nodded at the driver through the mirror and car stopped right under the metro station.
Anvita could not open the door despite trying twice.
“Anvita. You must remember my offer. You are really attractive. I would like to take you to my bed. It will be great pleasure for me and equally beneficial for you. Think about it. We will meet soon.”
Manjot said and he leaned to her as if to open the door, and inhaled.
“Mmm... Your smell drives me crazy. I am already dreaming about it.”
“Please... open the door...”
She said in a weak voice.
He leaned again and opened the door. She did not bother to react whatever Manjot was saying. She jumped out of the car in a second and rushed toward the entry gate of the metro station. She walked as faster as she can, hoping to vanish from his sight.

Anvita was stressed over the incident for a few days. She was watchful when she left the office every day. She thought about discussing it with Atul but then decided against it. It’s better not to stress him too. As days passed, without Manjot’s reappearance, Anvita began to feel easy.

A few weeks after the deal went green, Shashank announced an exclusive dinner party. He met Anvita personally.
“You must come. If you have any other commitments, I’ll postpone the event. Tell me I don't have to.”
Anvita smiled.
“You don't have to.”

The dinner was on Saturday. It was very enjoyable; with great food, drinks, and music. Anvita stuck with Prerna and Rony initially, trying a couple of cocktails. When Karan approached them seeking Anvita’s company, Rony sent him packing his bags right away. Later, Anvita noticed Bobby alone at one corner, with his utmost concentration on the live music.
“Is he having bloody juice?”
Anvita wondered.
“Yes.”
“Strange.”
“Forget him. Look at that one.”
Rony nodded at a woman speaking with Shashank.
She looked in her thirties, wearing a long cut gown that drew out her perfect curves. She had long hair, glowing skin and an alluring smile. Anvita noticed that she was in a very active conversation with Shashank. The way she stood and talked with him, she looked independent
“Who’s that?”
“That’s Mahima.”
“Who’s she?”
“She is a friend of whoever is worthy.”
“What!”
Rony was staring at her curves. Anvita was not surprised.
Anvita’s fun at the party ended when Manjot arrived. Anvita saw him first and she moved away from him. But Shashank sent for her soon after. She was determined to ignore the ugly man.
Shashank introduced the big man to the crowd. When he was done, and the crowd toasted for the guest, Shashank took Anvita to him.
“Anvita, see who’s asking for you!”
He said jovially.
“Anvita! I’ve been waiting for this moment!”
Manjot said and forwarded his hand to her. Anvita threw a glance at Shashank as if seeking approval and gave in. Manjot took her hand kissed it. She looked at Shashank helplessly and he blinked. To aggravate her misery, Shashank excused himself very soon, leaving her at Manjot’s side.
She feared he might bring up his lunch proposal as soon as she was left alone with him. But he asked her about family and life in the city. She was sure he was delaying it to add up the tension. Before it happened, she excused herself in pretence to visit washroom and stayed there.
She was standing in front of mirror awkwardly when she saw Mahima behind her. Mahima checked herself in the mirror and threw a careless glance at Anvita. Anvita smiled at her.
“You better stay away from him.”
Mahima said.
“I am staying away from him.”
Anvita said readily and Mahima looked at her, amused.
“I am kinda hiding,” Anvita added shyly. Mahima’s eyes widened.
“No. This is not the way. Why you should spoil your party because of him?”
“He’s a crocodile.”
“Come with me.”
Mahima led her outside.
“Don't look at him. Just follow me.”
She instructed.
They walked away to the other side of the crowd and Anvita breathed easy.
“Thanks, you saved me.”
Anvita said.
“You are most welcome. I am Mahima, by the way.”
“I am Anvita. I work at Teckpo.”
“Teckpo? I’ve never seen you there...”
“I am a newcomer....”
They got along well with friendly talk.
Mahima was a friend of Shashank. She ran her own business. She had forty employees under her. Despite being at the far side of her thirties she had remained unmarried. Mahima was telling a funny story when Anvita noticed a man engaged in a conversation with two girls by the counters.
“Oh shit!”
She blurted out.
“What happened?”
Mahima looked at where Anvita was looking.
“Who’s that?”
“That’s Manjot’s driver.”
“But he seems too good with the girls to be just a driver.”
Mahima said, her eyes set on him. She was right; the man looked interesting to the eyes, with cool looks and towering personal attributes, and he appeared to have won over the girls he was with. But Anvita was not impressed.
“He’s just another crocodile.”
Anvita noticed the girls laughing at his joke, probably a stupid one. She turned her head in disgust.
Whatever.
 
A few days later, Mahima visited Teckpo Int. and as she had promised, she met Anvita.
“You surprised me. And you look beautiful.”
Anvita did not hide her admiration.
“Thank you, Anvita. You look great too. I am hosting a small house party at my home tomorrow. It’s for my close friends only. I want you to join that list.”
Mahima said.

Mahima’s apartment was on the seventh floor. It was a large and luxurious, and Anvita thought it lived up to the young entrepreneur’s reputation. Awe-inspiring interiors, furniture and expensive amenities.
Mahima welcomed Anvita with a warm hug and introduced her to her friends. Anvita got along well with all. She felt more than comfortable as all the guests were ladies. An hour into the party, Atul phoned Anvita.
Mahima snatched her phone.
“It’s Mahima here, Atul. Do you mind if your girl comes home too drunk? Because it’s a ladies only night!”
She said jovially and winked at Anvita.
“Just ask her to remember me before she passes out!” Anvita heard Atul's voice.
Mahima laughed.
“Your hubby boy is fun, darling!”
She said to Anvita.
“Oh, he is!”
Soon there was music and dance. Anvita forgot everything and led the show.
“You are awesome, my dear!”
Mahima said and hugged her tight in the end. An hour of furious dancing had passed.
Everything settled down and the guests began to leave in groups. When Anvita began to leave, Mahima asked her to stop.
“I want to introduce someone to you.”
“Why didn't she come for the party?”
Anvita doubted. The doorbell rang at the moment and Mahima smiled.
“Because it’s not a ‘she’. It’s a ‘he’.”
She opened the door and a man walked in. She was looking excitedly at him, and everything went blank in one second. He handed Mahima a gift packet and hugged her, and Anvita felt sick in her stomach watching them exchange pleasantries. Mahima led him to Anvita and introduced her to him.
“This is my friend Anvita. She’s the one who first introduced you to me.”
Mahima was laughing.
He kept his eyes on Anvita and forwarded his hand to her.
“Hi Anvita, we meet again and how! I am Maniesh Sain.”
