Chapter 28
Anvita
The first thing Anvita noticed at Teckpo Int. was her colleagues' sense of professionalism. Everybody gave importance to their work the most. Nobody took a break unnecessarily. In her conversations with Atul, he often mentioned how he wanted to feel relaxed and got out of his office for a coffee. But at Teckpo, it was different. There were a coffee machine and a dedicated person to bring the coffee to everyone. That’s the end of it. Unlike Atul’s office, there was no smoke zone in Teckpo. The boss ruled ‘no smoking in my office’ and Anvita liked it. The rule had forced all the workers to remain non-smokers. There were many more things that prompted her to believe that it’s a perfect no-nonsense place.
Bobby gave her simple tasks in the beginning. Most of them required her to work on MS Office where she needed to hyperlink between files. She assumed it a simple task but within no time she was pulled into the system and she learnt why people stuck to their chair all the time. Chat windows popped up everyone’s screen very often, distributing tasks demanded by someone else. Bobby monitored their performance. When somebody fails to clear a task in the stipulated time he would interfere. Firstly he would send a pop-up.
“Where are you?”
Anvita noticed them standing up to reply - mostly asking for some more time. Sometimes he would visit their cubicles and inspect the work.
“Why he’s so feared by all?”
Anvita wondered.
“It’s simple. He can fire you just like this.”
Prerna snapped her finger.
Anvita did not feel threatened by that, though she took Bobby very seriously all the time.
Towards the end of the week, Bobby asked her to come to his cabin.
“Everything’s okay at home?”
Anvita looked at him surprised.
“Yes. Why not?”
“Anvita, you can give your husband all the love you have. You are free. But once you leave your home and reach here, you are mine. Give me every bit of your attention. You were brilliant to understand the tasks; I’ve seen your potential. But you are not picking up the speed as I expected. What is wrong with you?”
Anvita found his burning eyes difficult to face.
“Here it’s perfect, in every way, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Then? Should I call your husband and ask him to let you sleep a little earlier?”
“What is it...”
She began to protest and he dismissed it.
“You seemed sleepy until I called you in here.”
“No. I am okay.”
“I can make you work in my cabin for the whole day. Is that what you want?”
“No.”
“At what time you went to bed yesterday?”
“Uh...at ten o’clock.”
“At what time you fell asleep?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean, Anvita. I asked you how long you spent satisfying him.”
“Excuse me!”
Her voice rose a bit.
“No. Don't raise your voice here. It won’t work here, Anvita. You are here to work for us. Nothing from your personal life should affect your performance here. Maybe you’ll find my language a bit harsh, but I am a little fond of you. I want to keep you here. Will you help me?”
She nodded.
“And don't make our small talks public. Not even to your husband. I don't like it. This is how things work. Consider it your training. Good?”
One thing that amazed Anvita was that not even once had Bobby’s eyes broken contact with hers. And he never seemed to look at her anywhere other than eyes. When he walked around her she would watch him secretly to find if he was checking her out. She never caught him.
He was indeed different. Especially when comparing to the others in her office.
Rony was the most impressed.
“You have a damn good body. Do you work out?”
He would send compliments to her every day.
Anvita’s constant attempts to catch Bobby checking her out only ended up in her own embarrassment. He caught her looking at him through the corner of her eyes.
The last time when she was caught, he walked up behind her and put his strong palms over her shoulders.
“Concentrate on your work, Anvita.”
He pressed his palms - half on the thin fabric and half on her skin – firmly. She could not turn her head, and she just nodded. He walked away and she still felt the warmth of his hands on her skin.
One day Bobby walked up to her.
“Come with me, Anvita. We are going to meet someone.”
He led her to the head’s cabin.
“Ready to move, Mr Shashank.”
He said.
Shashank rose to his feet immediately. He looked at Anvita and smiled.
“How are you, Anvita?”
“I am fine, sir.”
“Call me Shashank, Anvita.”
“Yes. Shashank.”
She said hesitantly.
“Good to hear it that way.”
He extended his hand to her. When shook hands him, Anvita felt his hand not as firm as Bobby’s that she had felt the other day.
A few minutes later she Anvita was sitting inside a car with Shashank. Bobby sat beside the driver. Anvita was nervous.
“Where are we going sir, I mean, Shashank?”
Bobby turned his head.
“I told you Anvita. We are going to meet someone very important.”
The car was stopped in front of a tall building that Anvita knew would be another corporate giant.
The very important ‘someone’.
Bobby turned to her.
“Anvita, Shashank will meet the guy and will do all the talking. All you need is to stand behind him. And don't be nervous. Just keep smiling. Okay?”
She smiled all the way and he was pleased. He talked on the phone to someone and then nodded to Shashank.
“Go.”
Shashank walked in the front and Anvita followed him.
From the reception, they were ushered to the conference hall. They were welcomed by a man whom Anvita immediately judged grumpily. He looked in his forties and had darkened eyes surrounded by even darker circles. His face was filled with dark spots and holes; lips dark and thick. He looked a heavy man weighing almost a quintal.
Is this man their boss?
She suddenly felt proud of her job at Teckpo. At least she had a good-looking boss.
The ugly man’s name was Manjot. He looked at her face only for a second and immediately his eyes fell at her breasts. He slowly steered his eyes all over her body, taking pleasure in it, and then brought his eyes back at her face.
“How are you doing, sweetie?”
“I am doing fine, Manjot. How are you?”
She took extra care to smile at him. She felt he was about to jump over her.
I would die. She thought.
Shashank turned to her.
“Anvita, you can wait outside. I will call you.”
“Sure, Shashank.”
She thanked him in mind and walked out hurriedly, only to collide with a man. His coffee was spilt over her dress, exactly below her breasts.
“Oh fuck!”
She grunted. She felt the coldness creeping inside her dress, slowly.
The man stood and stared at her, amazed.
“Wow. What a beautiful way to respond!”
She saw his eyes fixed at her breasts.
“What, you wanna fuck me?” Her eyes were blazing.
“No. Not today. Please, I am begging you.”
Anvita wanted to punch him on his face. But he was too heavily built a man to engage physically for whatever reasons.
“Go away from me. Where the fu...where is the washroom?”
She looked around and saw no one. She was so furious that she kept looking to her left and right even though she saw nothing.
“Calm down. You still look above average. You haven’t lost it.”
He was trying to annoy her. She knew it and decided to walk to her left.
“Washroom is that way.”
He said.
She dismissed him and walked forward and found the washroom right there.
Bloody beggar! He was still trying to mislead me.
Anvita cleaned the stain with water and wiped it off. She tried to hold her chest under the hand dryer. It was difficult, but she managed to fix most of the damage.
She returned to the conference hall and stood outside the door. Ten minutes later, she found him coming towards her, again.
Not again!
“Hey, you are back?”
Who the fuck is this guy?
She wanted to scream at his face. But she chose to stay calm.
“Don't talk to me.”
“If you are still waiting for the boss, he’s gone upstairs.”
“What!”
Anvita pushed open the door. The conference hall was empty.
“Where are they gone?”
“Upstairs. Conference hall. That way.”
He pointed. Anvita walked at the exact opposite, for she had seen the stairs already. She walked the stairs and found the conference room. She pushed it open slowly. And she froze.
Manjot was there, leaning on his bum against a large desk with his right hand supporting on it, and a girl was right in front of him, kneeling; and his left hand was behind her head, moving it back and forth. His dick was in the girl's mouth and she was struggling. It was not directly visible to Anvita but she could grasp everything before she could blink.
“What the hell!”
She yelled and they both turned to her. His hard thing fell out of her mouth and hung in the air. Anvita's eyes fell on it for a moment. The girl panicked and began to get up, only to be grabbed by her hair by his left hand.
"Hold on, sweetie!"
Manjot grunted and pushed her down to her knees again.
"Are you forcing her?"
Anvita asked, despite her shaky voice.
"Get out!" Manjot shouted at her, "Else you take her place." He threatened and Anvita believed him.
He turned his attention back to the girl immediately and then pushed his dick back into her mouth.
Anvita looked on as he began to move the girl's head toward his crotch and back. Anvita freaked out and she ran away.
She ran through the corridor. As she turned to the stairs and jumped down she collided with the man, yet again, and this time both of them fell down. She barely sat up and grabbed his collar.
“What the fuck you want, you moron?”
She pinned him on the floor and yelled. He was heavily built and he could shake her off too easily, but nothing stopped her from assaulting him. She slapped him from left and right with her weak hands and panted heavily. He did not stop her at all. He merely looked on. She realised she was sitting on his chest and she moved off him. She wanted to cry.
“Why are you always running into me?”
She blamed.
He got up and smiled at her as if nothing happened.
“Your hands are weak. You should work out more.”
His indifference was unbearable to Anvita.
“Fuck you, mister!”
She growled at him and turned and walked down the stairs. She heard him laughing.
Anvita went to reception and asked about Shashank.
“He left after the meeting. How did you miss him?”
The man asked. The woman stood next to him poked at his hand.
“Shut up!”
She was looking at Anvita suggestively and Anvita burned. Yet she said nothing and walked toward the lift. She still had no idea what was happening around her. More than the ugly sight at the conference room, the multiple collisions with the arrogant guy rattled her of her composure.
As she rushed out of the lift on the ground floor, she ran into Shashank.
“Where were you, Anvita?”
He was nervous and furious.
“I was...in the washroom...”
“Come with me.”
He walked her back to the reception and they were ushered quickly ushered to an office cabin. No one was there.
Shashank was about to sit on the chair when a young woman walked in.
“Sir, please come with me. Ma’am, you will wait here, please.”
Anvita recognized her, albeit a second late. She was the one giving head to the ugly boss.
What the hell is going on here?
Anvita felt sick in her stomach and sat down. The door behind her moved, and she turned her head.
“Hello, Anvita. Again we meet.”
Manjot was smiling. She jumped up.
“Sit down, honey.”
“Shashank... he...”
Anvita began to speak.
“I am here to talk with you.”
Manjot stood closer. The scent of his expensive perfume filled her nose. It smelled good but she hated it instantly. He leaned on the desk and she hated his posture too. It was hard not to be distracted by his crotch at her eye level. She shamefully looked up at his ugly face.
He began to speak.
“Anvita, what you saw in that room is real. That was my staff, and she gives me pleasure. You know I fuck very good, very deep and girls like it. They beg me to fuck them. They come to my cabin and suck my dick and lick my balls in the day in my office so that I fuck them in the night in their bed. That’s the way it is. You saw it, I know. Unfortunately, you are an outsider. But the only thing that I am asking you is... do not talk about it.... with no one. Do you understand who I am talking about?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
“What?”
“Who do you think you should not discuss it with?”
“No one.”
“Be specific.”
“Uh... my friends....and colleagues...”
“Let me help you by giving you some leads. Shashank. Prerna. Atul. Shreyas. And everyone among their level.”
Anvita could not look up at him anymore.
Who is this man? How does he know about me this much?
“You got it, no?”
“Yes.”
Her voice was weaker than ever.
“Good. You can wait here for Shashank.”
Manjot patted her cheek and walked away. Ten minutes later, Shashank pushed open the door behind her.
“Come on Anvita, let’s go.”
She ran to him.
Back in the car, Shashank was full of joy.
“What a miracle! We have it, Bobby!”
“Congrats Shashank!”
“Anvita is my lucky charm, isn’t she?”
“Are you, Anvita?”
Bobby looked at her. She just stared at him. She was not getting the picture.
“Uh... what can I say? I am just happy. Congrats, Shashank!”
Shashank grabbed her hand and kissed at the back of her palm. She felt shy for she felt good. Unknown to these men, she was sure she was the reason for this miracle. And she began to ponder over to find a person with whom she can share the secret safely.
Sorry, Manjot, you damn fucker, no way am I going to keep my promise.
Four days after the dinner at Fine Dine, Shreyas phoned Anvita.
“I’ve been thinking about you, Anvita. The dinner we had was not the one I would like to cherish. Perhaps it was because we had company from both our sides. I could not partake in the gathering, to be honest. You too; I missed your smiling face that day. How about lunch this week, on Saturday, between just us?”
Anvita knew it a mile ahead and her reply, a polite refusal, was already decided. But when she opened her mouth, it was something else.
“Saturday...hmmm... what will I say to Atul?”
“Atul won’t be here. You don't need to tell him.”
“Where is he going?”
“He’s going Mumbai.”
“Are you sending him away?”
“No. Not at all.”
Anvita did not buy it easily.
“Tell me the truth, Shreyas.”
“Believe me, Anvi. He’s our best chance to win this deal. He pulled off a miracle last time. You can ask him this.”
Saturday morning Anvita woke up tensed. She had a date with her husband’s boss.
“How’s that this meeting is on Sunday?”
Anvita asked. Atul was getting ready.
“It’s not an official meeting. This gentleman’s company is not going to allow us to do that. I will have to meet him personally.”
Atul explained.
Atul’s flight was at noon. Anvita thought the lunch with Shreyas was no more a possibility. However, her phone rang as soon as Atul departed.
“Shall I pick you up from home?”
Shreyas asked.
Anvita wondered if he was watching her from close.
Perhaps he might have called Atul. She thought.
“In one hour.”
She replied.
Anvita stood in front of the full mirror and watched herself. A sense of thrill was beginning to fill her.
What are you so excited about, Anvita? She couldn't really find an answer.
Anvita wore a blue dress kurta and a matching medium heel sandal. She put on mascara and lipstick. She curled the tip of her wavy hair. When Shreyas arrived, she hurried.
I don't want to be seen by neighbours. She assured herself.
Shreyas stepped out of the car and opened the door for her.
“You look marvellous, Anvi.”
Anvi. Anvita felt good and hence ashamed.
“Thanks.”
She observed the surroundings and sat inside the car. Shreyas sat next to her.
Five minutes later, the car was speeding up through the traffic.
“Are we going to the same place?”
She asked.
“No. Today it’s a different place.”
Anvita’s phone rang. Atul’s flight was airborne. Anvita wished him a safe journey and success. She cut the call and turned to Shreyas.
“I am not feeling good about this, Shreyas. It is not right.”
Her voice was very low. Shreyas placed his palm over hers.
“There is nothing wrong, Anvi. We are not doing anything wrong.”
“But that doesn’t make it right. Why are we doing it without telling him?”
“You will figure it out when we reach the place.”
He tapped over her palm as if to assure her. She wanted to move her hand but she could not. He took his hand back a few moments later. She breathed normally.
Yes. We are not doing anything wrong.
An hour later, the car was pulled into a service road and then turned left. Anvita saw the attractive looking hotel from a hundred meters away. Her nervousness gave way to enthusiasm as Shreyas led her to the lobby. A waitperson came forward to brief them and they were ushered to the backyard of the hotel. Behind it, a river flew along its rocky path. Its one end disappeared into the woods and it seemed like a road painted in silver. It was a sight to behold.
“Wow!”
Anvita stood there, unable to look away.
“Come, Anvi.”
Shreyas held her hand and walked to the edge of the backyard. Anvita gazed at the beautiful stream from above, and she felt calm and happy.
There is nothing wrong. This is very right.
They sat inside one of the small huts on the backyard. The thrumming sound emanated from the river as it hopped over the rocks filled the air. It felt enchanting to Anvita. The wind from the river was caressing her ankles and Anvita felt cold. She ordered vodka. Shreyas chose some non-alcoholic drink. He looked at her surprised when the waitperson was gone.
“You surprised me.”
“I feel cold. Don't you?”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
The wind turned warm and pleasant soon as Anvita sipped her drink slowly.
“Now you know why we are doing it. It feels good. Isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“I still have a bad feeling about it," she added.
“What is that?”
“That I am not feeling any hurry to go back.”
Shreyas smiled. “Isn’t it actually a good thing, Anvi?”
“If I accepted that, I would feel guilty.”
“Guilt is merely an interpretation.”
“You have a justification for everything.”
“We talk what we believe.”
When Anvita finished her glass, he ordered two; one for himself.
“It’s good.”
He shook his head slowly, his eyes close.
“mmm... really good. It makes us warm, isn’t it?”
They chatted and laughed for long, without really tracking the time. Anvita had noticed how his shyness were gone while talking to her.
Food was superb, as expected. Anvita wondered if she should tell about the weird incident at Teckpo Int. Then she thought about the ugly man’s penis hanging out of the girl’s mouth. No way could Anvita discuss it with Shreyas.
It’s a taboo subject.
Shreyas noticed her.
“What are you thinking?”
“It’s about a funny incident happened at my workplace. But I am not ready to talk about it. I will tell you later.”
“That means we can handle more vodka.”
He said jovially.
“No. I will tell you tomorrow.”
“That’s a good idea because tomorrow I want to take you to another beautiful place.”
Anvita looked at his eyes.
“Tomorrow? Are we gonna escape again?”
“Escape!”
He laughed.
“I liked that word. Are we escaping?”
“It’s sort of... I don't know... it just came off my mouth. Tell me, are we going to do it again?”
“Why not? Don't you like to come with me?”
She wished if he asked just ‘don't you like to come?’, but he had asked ‘with me’.
“Yes. Definitely.”
When they finished lunch, they walked down the stone steps to the river. She stood very close and touched the water.
“Careful.”
Shreyas offered his hand to her. She clung to him.
“It’s really cold.”
She said.
He kept her hand even after they moved back. She forced her hand free from his grip.
“Oh, sorry.”
He apologised immediately.
“Don't be. It’s okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“What! Yes.”
He slowly took her hand, his eyes in hers. A moment later, she tried to distract him.
“It’s a beautiful place, isn’t it?”
He turned his eyes to the river.
“Yes. But nothing beats your beauty.”
He mumbled.
“What did you say?”
“Uhh... nothing.”
“No, you said something.”
“I said something about you...”
He looked into her eyes again. And then he leaned forward and kissed her. Though a light kiss, Anvita felt his warm lips over hers and she helplessly parted her lips. He pressed a little more, and it was now a complete kiss. However, he showed no hurry to intensify it. It was just a feeling, as they held their lips locked into each other a few seconds. His lips were harder than Atul's; she quickly learnt.
Anvita moved away first.
“Oh shit!”
She pressed her palm to her mouth.
“This is wrong, no.”
And she watched his face burn in horror.
"I am sorry, Anvi." He said quickly.
Anvita shook her head and walked away.
Back in the car, she sat silent.
“It was just a slip; an accident. Forget it, okay?”
“Yeah.”
She nodded.
“Everything was going perfectly alright, until....umm...I mean, if you forget that one moment, it’s still a perfect day. Isn’t it?
She nodded.
“Tell me you are alright. I don't know how to speak. I am just...”
He lost his words.
“I am alright, Shreyas.”
She was far from alright. She could still feel the warmth on her lips.
