Chapter 14
Atul

Atul felt Anvita was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. He walked over to her.
“What happened? Why do you look so puzzled?”
Anvita moved forward and hugged him tightly. Her arms quickly went around him.
“I missed you a lot.”
She was a whisper.
“I missed you too.”
Atul touched on her shoulders.
“I am home, relax.”
He cupped her face with both hands and kissed her. She was not embarrassed. She looked on and smiled at him lovingly before turning to Rajat.
“Why don’t you sit down, Rajat? Your friend is home.”
Atul didn’t hide his surprise.
“I am surprised to see you home today, Rajat.”
“So am I.”
Rajat said.
“It’s a rare off-day, in fact. I’d leave by the evening, by the way. I had got some fresh feeds for the fish; I wanted to know how it worked.”
He glanced briefly at the aquarium.
“It’s working well. Don’t worry, Rajat.”
Anvita said.
“So, should I leave, or wait for the tea?”
“I am making black tea for you.”
She said.
“No, thanks,” Rajat said; “I don’t want my teeth yellow. Women hate yellow teeth.”
“What happened?”
Atul interrupted. He felt they were too friendly and pretending to be strangers, yet.
“Nothing happened. There is no milk in my kitchen.”
Anvita said, looking away.
Atul turned to Rajat and he smiled.
“It’s okay. I should leave now.” He said softly.
When he was gone, Atul pulled Anvita closer again.
“What happened? Why do you look so upset? Did he say anything wrong?”
“What?” Anvita looked up into his eyes. “No! Why do you think so?”
“You look so upset.”
“I missed you a lot. Can't you just avoid these trips?”
“I wish I could say yes…”
Anvita hugged him tightly again.
Even though there was nothing to make him suspicious, Atul felt there was something that he was unable to find out. Perhaps I will never know.
Atul prayed it wasn’t too bad.

---           ---           ---           ---           ---

A few weeks into her teaching job, Anvita’s Institute came up with an excursion plan for the students and the staff. It was on Sunday and Anvita was set to go.
However, Atul’s parents visited on Saturday and Anvita eventually gave up the trip.
Atul’s dad Rajyavardhan was not happy with his decision to allow Anvita to work. Atul was expecting this. He knew his conservative parents would prefer a daughter-in-law who stayed behind the doors.
“It’s not a hectic job from the morning to evening, dad. It’s just a couple of hours. She’s educated and why she should waste time doing nothing and ruin life?”
Atul tried to explain. “I have planned to get her a better job later that does justice to her qualification.”
His dad was irritated and he got further furious when Atul eventually let his parents know of his plan to delay parenthood.
“The reason I let you marry so quickly with this girl was the wish to see a grandchild at the earliest. Don't you know it?”
Rajyavardhan yelled at him.
“Your brother brought an infertile woman to our family. Now, are you trying to fool me?”
Atul just hated his dad whenever he spoke of his first daughter-in-law like that. The reason for her inconceivability was still unknown and they had no idea about who was at fault. But in his eyes, it was her, beyond doubt.
“I am not ready for a child, dad. Please try to...”
“Shut up!”
He raised his hand.
“First you should make a couple of children. Then you may send her out of your house anywhere you want. Do you understand? In our family, we don't send good wives to work. Do you understand?”
As if speaking to him was a futile exercise, he turned to Anvita.
“At least do you understand? Leave your job right now. Forget it, my daughter. Do a wife’s duty first. Everything else comes after that.”
Anvita threw a glance at Atul before speaking.
“Dad, please. It’s our life. In your life, you may live with your plans and rules. But in ours, please allow us. We are not mature enough to...”
“Child, come here.”
Rajyavardhan interrupted and gestured her to sit with him. She sat on the couch and he nipped her ears right away.
“Ouch! Dad!”
Anvita let out a cry out of pain. Atul had to intervene to make his dad stop.
“Don't ever talk to me like that, do you understand?”
Dad turned to Atul with a scornful look.
“Both of you have no respect for elders. Is this what I’ve taught you?”
He went on to eat into his son’s ego. Anvita sat there and began to cry. Atul felt sorry for her, but dad had no mercy.
“Stop shedding crocodile tears in front of your husband.”
He said irritatedly.
It was hard to bear him. Atul always hated his dad when he tried to enforce his rules upon his life. Most of the time, he evaded facing him but this time it was his place and he had nowhere to run.
Mom spent most of her time trying to brainwash Anvita to have children instead of a career.

Atul’s parents left soon after lunch on Sunday. Anvita remained in bed and cried for the rest of the day. Atul had no words to console her.
Her mood wasn’t any better next morning too; however, she looked cheerful when he returned from work.
“You know, they postponed the excursion to coming Sunday.”
Anvita said enthusiastically. Atul was relieved for at least this news brought her back.

Anvita was even happier when she came back after the one-day excursion. She had a great time with her students and other staff of the institute.
“I hope your students behaved well during the excursion.”
Atul taunted her later.
“One of them proposed me.”
Anvita winked at him. He wasn’t surprised at all. They both laughed it off.

It was a pleasant week for Atul at the office too, and he thought Shreyas should have moved on from his issue with Anvita. However, he returned to Atul on Thursday.
“We are doing the dinner party.”
His voice was wary.
“What’s your worry?”
Atul asked.
“I don’t really want to do this, Atul. It has nothing for me.”
“You are the boss, boss.”
“I am not the boss. People under me laugh at me; those above me scare me. I have no say in what’s going on around me.”
Atul leaned back in his chair and studied him. Shreyas cleared his throat but said nothing.
“You are coming back to that old issue, aren’t you?”
Atul asked finally and Shreyas shook his head.
“It scares the shit out of me, honestly.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You do, Atul. And you can help me.”
It wasn’t the first time he was bringing up the subject.
I told you, Shreyas, there’s nothing I can do.”
“You can.”
“How exactly is that?”
“Look, I can't avoid the party. It’s not in my hands. There are big guns coming for the night. The last thing I want to happen is to look out of place like a boss. Anjali has already decided she won’t be coming. Everyone knows why. There’s only one way to undo all the damage.”
Atul knew what he was going to say.
“How?”
He wanted to hear it from him.
“Tell her not to say no again.”
“For what? You mean dance? Are you going to… okay, but she won’t listen.”
“Why not? Persuade her.”
“It’s impossible.”
Atul shook his head sideways. He knew it wasn’t impossible, though.
“I am not seeking apology, Atul. All I want is justice. I am a simple guy, you know me. I don’t deserve this insult. I want you to insist your wife to show some kindness to me.”
Atul sympathised with him.
“Do you still want to dance with her?”
“Atul, allow me to speak it clearly. I enter the dance floor only when my friends force me. I have no craze to dance with your wife. But you know she has embarrassed not only me but also my wife... I want her and her friends to see the better side of everything.”
“To impress your wife, I have to force my wife. Okay, even if it happens, what’s in it for me?”
Shreyas thought for a moment over it.
“You get to be friends with me. You already are, but, I mean the liberty. You get certain liberties.”
“Such as?”
“You get to choose your partner to assist you in your work.”
“And?”
“And you get fewer tasks if you want…”
“No. I like those tasks.”
Atul said quickly.
“You like?”
“Yup. They give me chance to excel, Shreyas.”
He said with a smile.

Apparently, Atul had nothing to lose. He was convinced that Shreyas was a victim of Anvita’s lack of spirit on that particular night which was the aftermath of Atul’s unwelcome reaction at Vrinda’s party. Moreover, Atul certainly enjoyed the power Shreyas lent him and he wanted to grab it.

However, it wasn’t as easy as he thought to convince Anvita. She simply said no when he bought up the matter.
“Please, Anvita. He’s not a person you think. He barely speaks to ladies. I think it was the first time he approached someone, that too because he thought I am one of the closest to him in the office. He’s an introvert in his personal life. He’s still ashamed to face his wife’s friends. Anjali’s not at all happy to come for a party next time.”
“I have stopped dancing with anyone but you.”
“Please. I beg you, Anvi, show some mercy on the poor guy.”
“Okay then do it properly.”
She smirked.
“What?”
“I said, beg properly. Kneel in front of your wife and beg to her to have mercy to dance with your boss.”
“Come on.”
“I am not joking. I want to be sure that you are making me do this thing. I’ll do whatever you ask.”
That sounded like a final word. Atul knelt in front of her.
“Okay, I’ve knelt. Have mercy now.”
“Ask me to allow your boss to dance with me.”
“But he’s not my boss.”
“Well, pretend.”
“Okay. Here it goes. Please allow my boss to dance with you.”
Atul was simpering and Anvita suppressed hers.
“Mmm... now ask me to let your boss touch me wherever he wants...”
“What?”
“...and ask me to let him kiss me.”
“No.”
“Okay, then. No!”
Anvita grinned.
“No, I mean... come on...”
“This is not begging but bargaining.”
Atul grabbed around her feet and felled her on the couch. Then he jumped on top of her.
“I know another form of begging.”
He pressed his mouth to hers. She struggled to shake him off her.
“Stupid! Leave me!”
She said when he broke the kiss.
“Please... allow my boss to kiss you and touch you wherever he wants to...and allow him to do whatever he wants to... please don't embarrass the poor guy this time. I beg you my darling...”
Atul knew Shreyas wouldn’t attempt any of those.
Anvita burst into laughter and pushed him aside to jump over him. They both fell down and rolled on the floor.
“You know why I made you kneel today?”
She asked him later when they were in bed.
“Why?”
“Because your dad insulted me and I was having my revenge by punishing his son.”
The naughty smile on her lips made him wonder if she really meant it.
It was possible. And it was justifiable.

Even though Anvita agreed to behave well in the upcoming party, Atul’s mind wasn’t free of doubts, thanks to her sarcastic responses. He just prayed it all went well.
Two weeks later, it happened. Anvita chose to wear a dress that he couldn’t take his eyes off.
“When did I buy you this one?”
He asked amusingly.
“You didn't,” she winked. “It’s a gift from someone very special...”
He knew it was him.

When Shreyas saw her later, all his worries vanished.
“Wow, you look wonderful.”
He stuck out his hand confidently and Anvita responded with a bright smile.
“Thank you, Shreyas. How are you?”
They spoke and suddenly they looked like they were friends. He wanted to ask her about it but he couldn’t get enough space.
The crowd grew bigger and closer as the time passed; the ambience grew lively as the booze flowed freely. Anvita stuck to her wine loyalty before he took her to the dance floor. But a strange feeling had usurped his mind; then he knew he was dreading an inevitable moment.
It happened when they took a break from the floor. When Shreyas sought her hand, she instantly gave in. Then they were dancing. He stayed there watching them merge with the crowd until he heard a voice.
“He won’t steal her, dear; I give you my word.”
He turned to see Anjali. She smiled at him graciously.
She held no grudge, Atul noticed. Everything was reset. Her husband was now dancing with his wife in front of her friends; of all their friends. He thought she would be expecting him to lead her to the dance floor. But he wanted to make a statement to her that he wasn’t ready for any sort of exchange. He cleverly led her to the lobby and engaged her in a conversation.
“I was honestly thinking you’d take me to the dance floor...”
Anjali confessed at the end of their drink.
“I thought we were dancing.”
Atul quipped. She smiled again.

When they parted, Atul returned to Anvita. Before he could reach her, Shilpa appeared from nowhere.
“Finally I have you alone.”
She said in a slurred voice and pulled him towards the dance floor. He couldn’t see her husband Giri anywhere near. He asked about him.
“Leave him alone, let’s dance.”
She said excitedly.
While dancing with her, he couldn’t find Anvita anywhere on the floor. She was apparently done dancing with his boss.
Shilpa was quite sassy in her moves. She had her arms on his chest all the time. He felt uncomfortable whenever she bumped her bosom to him. It made him conscious of being watched by Anvita. He certainly didn't like the idea of Anvita seeing him dancing with a friend, especially someone like Shilpa.
“I heard what you said to Shriya. I’m impressed.”
Shilpa said before he parted with after a couple of songs.
Atul wasn’t in the right spirit to dig into her compliment as his priority was finding Anvita. Initially, he didn’t worry because he was sure she would be safe with Shreyas. He can't be a threat; he would never try to act smart with her. But then, when finished looking for her at the entire floor, and when found out that Shreyas was also missing, Atul was forced to amend his stand. He saw Anjali actively interacting with a group of men, and she seemed to have no concern about her missing husband. Yet the last thing Atul wanted to do was to walk up to her and inquire about the combined whereabouts of his wife and her husband.
Someone later told him he saw Shreyas going upstairs. Atul wasted no time and walked the stairs to the upper lobby. He ran a quick scan among the small groups of men and women who were equally exhausted. His heartbeats were on a steady rise, and his throat went dry in a few seconds.
Where the hell are they gone to?
Where the fuck are you hiding, Anvita?
He wanted to scream her name across the semi-lit hall. He spotted a balcony at the farthest end of the lobby. They must be there, looking at the beautiful city view from atop, he concluded. There were no other possible exits from the lobby. He swam across the hall and pushed open the glass door to the balcony.
There was none.
He pulled out his mobile and dialled up Shreyas’ number. It rang and rang and rang, forever.
Bastard. He gritted his teeth in silent fury. Anvita had left her mobile at home, and it left him helpless. He felled himself into an empty couch at the corner. It was the darkest place in the entire lobby yet he wished nobody saw him. A thousand of relevant questions arose in his mind. How? Why? Where?
My dear Anvita, where are you? Please come back. He prayed.
He wished it was all about a prank being played at him. Yes, it’s a horrible one, but I will be the happiest to know that I was fooled. Yes, all the guys sitting around me seemingly in some distant world would laugh at me, and make fun of me; but please, please make it a prank. Just.
Or a dream. Please wake me up.
Atul wept silently.
Shouldn’t I be screaming aloud, calling out her name?
There was still a battle going on, deep inside him; the fear of losing his love versus that of losing honour.
What if they were doing just some sort of chitchat at some corner which I have just missed?
At that exact moment, his eyes fell at the staircase. He had missed the terrace.
Hope is like magic. It can make a dead person alive.
He hurried through the stairs and hobbled into the terrace which turned out to be a jungle in disguise of a badly-lit garden. He tore into the darkness with his eyes wide open, and then he found some human presence only at the farthest end of the flora. A man and woman; she was Anvita; he could make it out from that distance, and it breathed life into his blood and brain. Then he noticed how their posture. They were standing close, as in an embrace, albeit facing the pabangt. Let them be; he decided as he moved towards them.
Then there was a strange feeling. With the shortening distance, he suddenly felt his confidence too, coming down. Subconsciously he felt he was walking purposelessly as if he was going to poke into the private world of two unknown lovers. He foresaw them turning their head to look at him and then acting cold. He dreaded them discarding him like a mere stranger. He tried to zoom in to the dark outline of the woman to make sure it was Anvita – indeed she was – and that didn't help him at all. His steps became weaker and weaker, and unsure until he halted halfway.
He couldn’t move any further.
Then the man said something that made Anvita giggle while turning her face to him. He turned his head too, and Atul watched their faces coming closer to just a breath away.

Chapter 15
Anvita

Anvita knew she was dreaming.
She was on the bank of a river from which everyone appeared to be running away in panic. Anvita did not turn away; instead, she was drawn to the tiny cute flowers at the edge of the water. As she walked down to pick them up, an elder woman sought her attention from across the river, apparently seeking help to cross the water.
The water was calm, yet.
Anvita walked across the stream and approached the old woman who appeared to be ageing more and more with each of her steps. Anvita extended her right hand to the woman, “Allow me to help you.”
The old woman looked at her scornfully, and suddenly turned away and disappeared into the ever-growing darkness. Anvita was shocked, and she was even more shocked to realise she was alone, stranded at the face of a looming flash flood.
She panicked in a second, and ran back to safety, only to realise it was too late. The river had taken its monstrous form and it roared behind her, pulling her into it beyond saving.
All she could do was to scream.
And she woke up.

She was burning hot and sweating. She felt thirsty. She was alone.

Atul was gone to Mumbai and Anvita was alone in the apartment. The darkness and the silence were scary. Anvita switched on the lights in the bedroom and hall and went back to bed.
It was going to be a long night. She hated it.

She couldn’t find sleep even after one hour. She grabbed a framed photo from the table and kept it on the bed. Atul was smiling at her. She smiled back at him.
“Hello, baby!”
She waved at him. She wanted him back home as quick as possible. She was impatient.

---           ---           ---

Anvita had often wondered why all the boys were so impatient. The first ever proposal she had received was ironically the most serious one.
“Will you marry me?”
“What! Why?”
“You are the cutest girl I have ever seen.”
That was two years before she joined high college. Three years later she joined the higher secondary college and then came the beautiful college days. So many boys, so many ways of asking; the words used to change, but their meaning remained the same: say no to me, please.
“No.”
Anvita kept her answer same for all; until she met Atul. Even for him, the routine was the same. He too put forth the ‘will you marry me’ question; but the meaning had changed magically: say yes to me, please.
There was no way she could say no to him because she had fallen for those black eyes well before that. She was in his destiny. She knew she had been waiting for him.
However, she had to thank him later, for waiting for one and a half month before he proposed her.
“Otherwise I would have rejected you too. What a miss it would have been.”

There had been many instances when she felt Atul was the one for her. He too was born with a gift: he could impress people without trying.
Anvita’s dad used to tell her, “You are the most beautiful girl I and your mom have ever seen, Anvi. A lot of men will be willing to win your heart. So the selection of choosing the one is going to be very tough for you and you’ll have to be very careful. You can use your heart to choose whatever you wish, but you must use your brain to decide where you put your heart.”
His message was clear and Anvita had no problem to follow it. Then came Atul.
When he met Anvita’s dad for the first time, Atul touched his feet, surprising both the daughter and the father. Her dad was going to be so impressed with his etiquettes and discipline that his approval came even before Anvita presented her wish.
“If you plan to marry this boy, you already have my blessings.”
Anvita just loved how easily Atul nailed it.

Everyone in Anvita’s family loved Atul and Anvita loved that too. Anvita was proud when she saw how excited everyone was when they met him at the engagement function. And Anvita took pride in displaying the engagement ring.

A month after the engagement, she had met a man at a friend’s wedding reception. He was also diagnosed with the disorder called impatience. He proved it when he pulled her aside and proposed her.
Anvita held up her hand, “You should see this. I am engaged.”
She thought she would surprise him but she ended up one when he held up his hand.
“Me too.”
Anvita laughed, “What!”
“I am going to throw it away. I have never felt it like this with her, now I understand why. She’s not the one for me, but you are!”
She laughed nonstop and walked away, leaving the man alone.

If there was one man who could put her to test before saying no, it was Varun. She was aware that Varun liked her. But she was not sure about herself. If he had proposed her, it would have been tough to take a call. She would have said yes, only to avoid disappointing him by saying no. However, she was lucky enough to meet Atul at the right time in her life.

Apart from the cuteness and handsomeness he possessed, Anvita loved the fact that Atul was honest in his approach. The moment she had seen him, she knew that he liked her. He had gone head over heels for her; yet he waited for a few days, learning more about her, and letting her know more about him before he made his move. He was unlike others. He knew what he wanted.

Apparently, Atul’s dad was against his study and then his job in the city and finally the love marriage. But Atul was ready to fight him every time and won them all. Anvita loved to tell those stories to her family members after the engagement. And then there were stories that pleased her even more: the stories of beautiful girls trying for his attention. A couple of them had even proposed him.
In fact, Anvita loved the attention Atul got from other girls. And what she loved, even more, was the way he casually ignored them all.
Even after the marriage, she had noticed eyes that worshipped her husband. Some of them were quite surprising, like Leona. George’s wife clearly had hots for him. Anvita wouldn’t have enjoyed it if not for Atul’s indifference toward Leona.

If Anvita didn’t like something about the marriage, it was indeed Atul’s dad, Rajyavardhan. If she had thought that her solicitous behaviour would bring him closer to her, she was mistaken. He never seemed to like her, no matter how respectfully and assiduously she behaved in front of him. However, in her attempts to impress her father-in-law, she had impressed everyone in the family. She was surprised to see Atul’s mom Sangeeta hugged her and cried when she left hometown. One of the neighbours remarked how the new girl has won the heart of all within so fewer days. For that, Anvita was to some extent grateful to her father-in-law.

After that everything was fine. Anvita loved Atul’s apartment. It was spacious and well designed and she loved the way the sun rays entered her room in the morning. Anvita loved mornings. She loved to wake up at early morning and she loved to watch the sunrise. It gave her happiness. She woke up early and resumed working out which was paused after marriage. She used to play badminton before marriage. She was a regular in the college team.
A week after coming to the place, Atul took her to the nearby park where she would spend half an hour of her mornings.

Anvita loved everything about the new place except the neighbours. There were three more apartments on the fourth floor. One was Rajat. She hated him for his disrespectful eyes, and the hatred only grew after Atul warned about him.
In the next apartment lived a man called Shiva and family. They were introverts in every way. They lived secretly and in complete silence. They were rarely seen outside and they seldom interacted with others.
The fourth apartment lie permanently closed for unknown reasons. Perhaps its owner saw it as just an investment.
Anvita’s relief was the occupants on other floors. Neeti was the one who helped her get the indoor plants. Anvita spent her spare time to nurture a small garden she set up in the balcony. She kept the house neat and clean all the time. Anvita believed cleanliness is the route to peacefulness.
Amongst all her neighbours Neeti had become the closest to her. Neeti lent her help for her garden. Anvita was disappointed when she first learnt about her hanky-panky with Rajat. It was a time when her hatred toward Rajat had peaked. She even mentioned it to Neeti, though reluctantly.
“Do you think what you are doing is right? You are risking two families.”
“I didn’t do anything. There is no risk.”
Neeti had argued.
And when she took that risk, it was fatal. And it was just a beginning.

While Atul was gone to Mumbai, Mohit was also out of town. And when Anvita came back from the institute, she had noticed Rajat’s bike in the parking lot. It was unusual for him to be home during working days. Then it crossed her mind. He’s here to make his move again.
The thought was going to stay in her mind for long. When Atul phoned her, she thought of telling him about it, and then decided against it. It might excite him like the other day. Anvita couldn’t stop smiling as she brought out the memories of the night in which they had made out on the couch. She sat on the couch sipping tea and replayed that night in her mind. How crazy I was.
The doorbell rang. It was Rajat and Anvita was surprised to see him. The first thought came across her mind was that he might have knocked on the wrong door.
After the usual greetings, Rajat handed her a packet of fish feed he had picked up from somewhere.
“This is better quality.”
He walked in, without waiting for her invitation. Anvita gently closed the door and followed him to the hall.
“Where is Atul? Not home yet?”
“No. he’s gone to Mumbai; will return tomorrow only.”
Rajat had begun to sit on the couch, and he stood up hurriedly.
“Oh, really? I didn’t know. Then I shouldn’t be disturbing you.”
“It’s okay. You are not disturbing me.”
Anvita said courteously. Rajat gave her a very short smile.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”
Anvita couldn’t say no.
“Thanks. You know I was really bored. I rarely visit here on weekdays, it’s really boring. I should have known Atul isn’t here.”
He looked disappointed and sat down.
“Why only Atul? There are other neighbours too!”
Anvita smiled and picked up her teacup from the centre table. As she bent forward, she was suddenly aware of having accidentally put her cleavage on display. However, to her comfort, Rajat didn’t lower his eyes off her face. And he was amazingly dumb to catch her hint about Neeti.
“No, Anvita. I can't bear that guy. Shiva is a strictly-no adventure.”
“Yeah, I know.”
Anvita laughed and began to turn. “Let me keep the cup in the kitchen.”
“You are just keeping the cup? I thought you’d consider some mercy to me.”
“Isn’t it too late for a tea? You should be having something else by now.”
“Yeah. That’s my preference. But I hate solo. What about you? I’ve heard you have a couple of favourites too?”
Anvita laughed sheepishly.
“You heard! Consider it’s a rumour that’s not true.”
“But we both know it’s not a rumour.”
“No way.”
“You give me the name, I fetch it.”
“Do you really realise what you are doing? You are asking your neighbour’s wife to have a drink with you?”
“My friend’s wife.”
“Yeah, your friend’s wife, of course.”
“What is wrong with that?”
“I know what you do with…”
Anvita stopped midway, and she knew she had already touched the wrong subject.
“What! What were you saying?”
“Nothing.”
“Come on, you said something.”
“Nothing, leave it.”
She moved back further.
“Come on, stop, Anvita.”
Anvita stayed.
“What?”
“You were saying something. What happened?”
Anvita couldn’t stop smiling.
“I was saying I know what you do with your friends’ wives.”
“What!”
He was so surprised that Anvita was taken aback.
“What, what?”
She grinned.
“Speak your mind, Anvita. You are making some serious allegations.”
“Allegation! Yeah, yes!” Anvita shook her head continuously and walked to the kitchen.
“I took my invitation back. I will settle with tea.”
She heard him saying. She didn’t reply and he repeated.
“Okay, I heard it, Rajat.”
She shouted.
Suddenly she felt the house was alive, unlike her regular evenings. She put the milk on the induction cooktop and tea was ready in a few minutes.
“That was really quick.”
Rajat said.
“It’s just a tea, it’ll take that much only.”
She said without thinking.
“You are speaking a sophisticated language.”
He said.
“What?”
He said nothing and took a sip. “Mmm…wonderful.”
Anvita was still standing there.
“You want me to leave, don’t you?”
Rajat looked up at her.
“What?”
“You are not sitting.”
Anvita sat down immediately.
“Thanks.”
He smiled.
“So, what were you saying?”
“You know what I was saying, that’s why you are still talking about it.”
“You brought up the subject.”
“Okay, I am taking it back.”
“I see you are scared.”
He nodded.
“Okay, let’s move on.”
Anvita looked away briefly, before turning to him.
“I was talking about Neeti. Do you think I don’t know?”
“I don’t know what you know.”
He’s playing with me. He’s deliberately dragging me into this.
Anvita wanted to move on. She wanted to say “Then that’s the end of the conversation.”
Instead, she said, “I know where you were that night, Isha’s wedding night.”
Rajat stared at her like he didn’t have a clue to what she was saying.
“What are you saying?”
Anvita was beginning to be annoyed.
“You are playing the dumb character, Rajat. I know you are bluffing. You are lying to fool me. I know it.”
“Why should a try to fool you?”
“You don’t want me to believe what I might have heard, that’s in your mind.”
“I don’t know what you have heard, or you might have heard. Why are you still beating about the bush?”
Anvita forced a laugh, “I am beating about the bush?”
“That’s what you are doing. That’s what I am saying.”
“You are a liar, Rajat. You know, I was the witness when Neeti walked through your door that night. And I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”
Rajat looked toward the door.
“You mean to say you were standing there and Neeti walked into my house all the way without noticing you?”
“The door was closed, stupid. I was looking through that peephole.”
Rajat stared at her, in disbelief.
“If my memory is intact, you were at the wedding site when I left.”
“We were right behind you. She went up to her house first, and then she came down to yours. Stop denying it!” Anvita raised her hand in the air. “Oh, God! Why am I wasting my time arguing with you? You have confessed it to Atul, and Neeti has done so to me too. You were playing a prank on me, weren’t you?”
She sat back and watched him laughing aloud.
“Woman is the ultimate spy. How true!”
He said in the end. His eyes stayed on her for long and Anvita didn’t feel awkward.
“Your cup is empty; you can keep it on the table.”
She said grumpily.
“I know; I was deliberately keeping it.”
“Why?”
“If I place it on the table, you’d say it’s over and now leave!”
“Of course, you’ll have to leave. And you will leave.”
He sent his eyes to the walk clock.
“It’s not that late. But if you want me to leave, I’ll have no choice.”
He kept the cup on the table.
“I know who wants what, Rajat. You are playing some clever game. But it won’t sell here.”
“Again that complicated language.”
“It’s very tough to wake up someone pretending to be asleep.”
“You think I am going to see her?”
“You are, aren’t you? That’s why you are home tonight.”
“Do you think it’s that easy? There are people in other apartments. Who knows somebody’s not spying at her from behind closed doors?”
He took a dig at her and Anvita grimaced.
“Try inviting her to yours. I won’t spy on you guys anymore.”
“I know that’s a big, fat, lie.”
“Whatever.”
“I know perhaps you want to see us doing it.”
“Maybe.” Anvita challenged.
“Do you want to see it?”
“What? Hell, no!”
“No, if you want, I can arrange it.”
Anvita blinked. “How?”
“Come, watch it.”
“Shee…!” Anvita frowned.
“Don’t pretend,” Rajat said quickly. “Show some guts. Admit what you feel. You know my secret. Let me know yours too. You guys; I know Atul has taken a lot of advantage of my… this thing. He must be doing better now…”
“Stop it. You should…”
“I can see someone’s putting up a great show. I demand some feedback.”
“Leave!”
“Feedback.”
“Leave, I say!”
Anvita raised her voice, pointing at the door. She was smiling out of both shame and sheepishness though, as she couldn’t help it. Rajat got to his feet.
“This is unfair.”
“Yes, it is. But I say, leave!”
“I deserve some mercy.”
Anvita didn’t want to say a word and she pushed him out of the house.
“Call it mercy. Good night.”
She said and closed the door before he could say anything. She waited a moment and looked through the peephole. He was waving at her.
“Feedback.”
Anvita opened the door.
“Go. Get inside your flat.”
Her voice had risen.
“Okay. Okay.”
He gestured her to calm down and opened his door.
“Promise me you won’t spy tonight.”
“Go inside, pervert. I am calling her to come right now.”
She said and he laughed.
“Are you?”
Anvita laughed.
“Go to your bed. Now.”
She slammed the door.

Anvita couldn’t get it out of her mind for the whole night.
He’s going to have her again. She was sure. For a moment she imagined him leading her to his bed and taking her in his arms. The very same bed that belongs to his wife. Anvita cringed at the thought. Suddenly she hated him. She couldn’t believe she spent the evening talking to him, so jovially. Is that how he seduced her? First, friendly chat. Then simply slipping into intimate subjects. Then he will ask what I like, like in bed. Anvita remembered how excited Neeti was when she revealed he licked between her legs. Then he will want to know whether I like it too.  Anvita thought. Will he ask? Anvita didn’t want to think any further. She went to bed early. But she couldn’t find sleep.

When she woke up in the morning, she remembered the dream. She hated it. She hated the old woman who tricked her. How creepy! She knew she was not going to forget it any soon.

Atul called in the morning. He had departed from Mumbai. He said he would go to the office directly.
“I miss you, Atul.”
She said.
“Me too, baby.”
He said and hung up.

Rajat visited again, before noon.
Anvita stood at the door, blocking his way. He stared back at her.
“You are not going to let me in?”
“Do you want to come in?”
“What have I done wrong to you?”
“You waste my time.”
In fact, she was studying him for the signs of the previous night, or love bites, and she hated herself for it.
“Not this time, I promise.”
She gave him the way and followed him to the hall.
“I have a gut feeling you are intruding because Atul isn’t here.”
“Can I have a cup of tea, please?”
“What?” She put her hands at her hip.
His eyes were stuck at her face, “Do you think it’s a tea stall or something?”
“I am a fan. Please.”
For once, deep inside, Anvita wanted him to lower his eyes to her breasts and stay there. Then I will kick him out. She knew.
But his eyes were impressively firm at her face. She turned on her heel and rushed to the kitchen.
“Thank you, thank you.”
He was right behind her.
She wanted to ask him to remain in the hall. But she kept silent and proceeded to put some milk on the boil.
“You seem to have slept well.”
He said.
“You didn’t?”
She was smiling already.
“No. she didn’t let me sleep at all.”
Anvita turned and stared at him for a long moment. She was still smiling.
“Are you going to brag now?”
“Do you want to listen?”
“No.”
“You won’t believe what we did.”
“I don’t want to listen.”
She turned her back to him and began to clean a piece of ginger.
“Come on let me help you with that.”
He moved next to her and tried to grab it.
“No. It’s okay.”
She shook her hand away from him.
“You know, she never told me she knew this and that, but it’s amazing that every woman is different.”
Anvita was suddenly finding uneasy from his standing so close, someone inside her was warning of looming danger.
“Really?” She blurted.
“Don’t you think so?”
“How do I know about that?”
His hand was still on the countertop, an inch away from touching her hand. She thought he’s gonna grab her hand. She wanted to move away. She wanted to push him away. She didn’t know whether to move away or push him away.
“You know about yourself. How about you?”
You! It’s about you, indeed!
“What about me?”
“Do you scream aloud?”
“What?”
“Do you ever scream when it hit you?”
Anvita had stopped working and he slowly grabbed the small ginger piece from her. He moved behind her and brought his right arm around her to grab the knife off her right hand.
“Neeti did scream very loud. But I know she’s no match to you, Anvita.”
He whispered into her ear. His breath rubbed behind her ear and she felt her breath choked at her throat. She had lost her voice.
“She was bending forward on her knees when she began to scream and you know what, I was really thinking about you. You look amazing from behind. There are no nights I don’t dream about it.”
A moment later, Anvita took a panic breath in, as she felt his left arm around her hip. He pressed himself against her, bringing her in complete confinement.
“O my God. You are a goddess, in every sense, Anvita.”
He said and pressed his lips behind her neck. It was a kiss.
Anvita fluttered like a bird in the hands of its hunter.

I can't upload it all at once because I don't have the complete story bro. I have the draft for many events and I'm working on it. I'm writing it. Update will be regular, like one chapter in two days.
Please be patient.
Keep reading and keep posting your views.
Thanks.
