I came across the whereabouts of this story through another writer who is translating it in one of the regional language. As in the 1st instance when I read the story in the regional language I myself felt very much disgusted and restless even though it is a story (it is so well portrayed). But as said we can correlate this story to many of the news about illicit relationships coming up in papers, news channels and ultimately leading to crimes either of the one gets killed or in some cases both, eloping with the illicit partner leaving the family to suffer the humiliation.
Coming to the points rised by "killthecheats" why Saravanan tolerated Meera is nothing but Saravanan loves his family and wife. At any cost he don't want to hurt them. Also as I see gradually all males become dependent on their female partners even though they are more independent and demanding at the initial phase of marriage. As the kids grow up their responsibility increases many folds to have them a good future, they starts concentrating on their bussiness, work and unable to spend much time with family and completely leaves the home responsibility on their spouses. It normally starts happening after 10 to 15 years of marriage and this is the time when most of the women are ripe (and are called aunties) and look for more attention as their youthfullness and beauty is fading away and husband spends more time away from home. Who ever gives or shows little bit of interest, appreciates their beauty and well maintained structure for that age (even though some times they all are lies) there is a chance to fall for the bite. She respects her husband for the managalsutra, two children and respectful life given by him. She does not love him. Respect and love are two different things.

She fears her husband that he might find out her affair and she may lose her current status. So, She is trying to hide her fears, but wants to enjoy with prabu. She does not have any true guilt in her mind for betrayal she is doing. What she has is only fear.
