పంతోమ్మిదీ యిరవయ్యో శతాబ్దాల నాటి సంధి చరిత్ర - అన్నారు కొందరు. భారతీయ విజ్ఞాన సర్వస్వము - అన్నారు మఱికొందరు. తెలుగువారి మహాభారతం - అన్నారు యింకొందఱు. నేటి వాతావరణ కాలుష్యాది అనేక దుష్పరిణామాలను ఆనాడే హెచ్చరించిన వైజ్ఞానిక భవిష్యపురాణం -అంటున్నారు యెందఱో. ఎందరైనా ఎన్నైనా అనవచ్చు కానీ... ప్రధానంగా స్త్రీ పురుషుల సంబంధాన్ని సహస్ర ముఖాలుగా చూపించిన అపూర్వ నవలా కావ్యం వేయిపడగలు.
ఈ నవలను 'కవి సామ్రాట్' విశ్వనాధ సత్యనారాయణ ఆశువుగా చెబుతుండగా అతని తమ్ముడు వేంకటేశ్వర్లు వ్రాశారు. 1934లో సరిగ్గా 29 రోజుల్లో 999 అరటావుల మీద వ్రాశాడు. ఆనాడు ఆంధ్ర విశ్వవిద్యాలయం వారు ప్రకటించిన పోటీ కోసం వ్రాయబడి బహుమతినందుకుంది. 1937-38లలో ఆంధ్రపత్రిక సచిత్ర వార పత్రికలో ధారావాహికగా ప్రచురింపబడింది. స్వర్ణోత్సవ సందర్భంగా తిరిగి 1987-88లో ఆంధ్ర పత్రికలోనే ప్రచురించారు.
ఈ నవల విశ్వనాధ స్వీయానుభవాల సారాంశం అని, అందులోని పాత్రలలో ఆయన కుటుంబం మరియు దగ్గరి సమాజం ఛాయలు గోచరిస్తున్నాయని పలువురు పరిశీలకులు అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు. అదే విధమైన అభిప్రాయాలను విశ్వనాధ పావనిరావు కూడా 1987లో ఆంధ్ర పత్రిక సీరియల్‌లో item box లలో వెలిబుచ్చారు. అందులోని పాత్రలు, స్థలాల స్వారూప్యం ఇలా చెబుతారు.
దీనిని మాజీ భారత ప్రధాని పి.వి.నరసింహారావు, "సహస్రఫణ్"గా హిందీ లోకి 1968 కాలంలో అనువదించాడు. ఆ అనువాదానికి కేంద్ర సాహిత్య అకాడమీ పురస్కారం లభించింది. 1995 తరువాత దూరదర్శన్ ద్వారా హిందీలోను, మరికొన్ని భాషలలోను ధారావాహికగా ప్రసారమైంది. 1976 ప్రాంతాలలో డా. చంద్రకాంత్ మెహతా, ప్రొ.మహేంద్ర ధవె దీనిని గుజరాతీభాషలోకి అనువదించారు. ఆర్.వి.ఎస్.సుందరం ఇదే నవలను కన్నడ భాషలోకి అనువదించాడు. 1998 కాలంలో "నూతన" అనే కన్నడ పత్రికలో ధారావాహికగా వచ్చింది. దీనిని ఆంగ్లంలోకి అనువదించాలని ప్రయత్నాలు జరుగుతున్నాయి. డా. శ్యామల కల్లూరి గారి అంగ్లానువాదం 'ఆవకాయ.కామ్'లో Thousand Hoods అన్న పేరుతో సాప్తాహిక ధారావాహికగా 2014లో కొన్నాళ్ళపాటు ప్రచురితమైంది.
