And Dr. Anjali leaned in close.
 
So close that Seema could feel her breath, warm and soft, passing over the wet pink skin.
 
Close enough to examine, and she examined.
 
She studied the edge of the hymenal ring, that pale thin crescent of tissue that had never once been breached, the small opening at its center no wider than a fingertip.
 
She tilted her head one way, then the other, following the curve of it.
 
"There it is," she said softly.
 
"Your hymen. It's still intact. Completely closed."
 
"It is?" Seema said, and her voice cracked a little.
 
"Completely." Dr. Anjali ran the pad of one finger, feather-light, along the thin edge of the tissue.
 
Seema's hips jumped.
 
"You can feel that?"
 
"Yes."
 
"Good. That's the tissue reacting. It's not rigid, it's stretchy, elastic. Some hymens are stiff, they tear the first time almost by themselves. Yours is soft. It's the kind that gives way if it's coaxed properly." She paused.
 
"The problem is not here, Seema.
 
Whatever that other doctor told you, the problem is not here."
 
Seema's eyes stung, suddenly and absurdly.
 
"But I could never let Naveen go that far."
 
"Aahaa, that is another problem. We can deal with that later. Now. I'm going to feel inside. Slowly. Tell me if anything hurts."
 
Dr. Anjali slicked her index finger with a little gel from a pump bottle, and then brought the fingertip to the small dark opening and pressed.
 
The tip slipped in, barely, just past the first ring of muscle, and Seema felt the stretch, a strange, full, almost ticklish sensation, like the first swallow of something too large.
 
She made a small sound.
 
"Breathe," Dr. Anjali said.
 
"Out, not in."
 
Seema breathed out, and her body let go, and the finger sank deeper, gliding along the warm wet pink walls, and Seema felt every millimeter of it, the slow drag of the finger against tissue that had never known a touch.
