The Game

"Mamta, "

"Find me, Rohan."

"Find me in the dark."

Her voice came from the left.

He moved toward it, his hands outstretched, fingers brushing empty air.

The darkness pressed against his eyes, absolute and disorienting.

"Every time you catch me, you get a few minutes.

And then I'll escape again."

"Mamta, "

"Don't be scared.

I've made it safe.

Just trust me."

He took a step forward, his hands finding the wall.

The house was silent except for his breathing and the soft rustle of her saree somewhere ahead of him.

The sound was maddening, a whisper of silk, a promise of her body just beyond his reach.

"I'm here," she whispered.

Her voice was close.

"Come find me."

He moved toward her voice, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Every nerve in his body was alive, straining for the faintest sound, the softest breath, the smallest hint of her presence.

The air itself felt charged, heavy with her scent, jasmine and something else, something warm and intimate that made his blood run hot.

The silk rustled again.

Closer now.

His fingers brushed something, a wisp of fabric, a strand of hair, he couldn't tell.

But it was her, and his entire body surged toward the contact.

"Found you," he breathed.

She laughed, low and soft, and slipped away again.

The sound of her saree trailing across the floor was the only compass he had, and he followed it blindly, desperately, into the dark.
