Scene 2 - The Weeks That Follow

The first week, she tried.

She tried because she loved him, and because she wanted to be a good wife, and because she believed, truly believed, that the problem was in her head.

If she could just relax.

If she could just stop thinking.

If she could just let go, the way her friends said they had let go on their wedding nights, the way every woman in every movie and every novel seemed to manage without effort.

So she tried.

On the third night after the wedding, she came to him.

He was sitting on the sofa in their new apartment, a two-bedroom flat in Gachibowli that they had chosen together, scrolling through something on his phone.

The lights were dim.

The city hummed beyond the balcony.

She had changed into a nightdress, a silk thing she had bought for the honeymoon, pale green, soft against her skin, and she sat beside him, close enough that her thigh touched his.

He looked up.

Surprised.

Hopeful.

She took his phone from his hand and set it aside.

She leaned in and kissed him, not the tentative, questioning kiss of their wedding night, but something surer, something that said I want this, I want you, I'm ready.

He kissed her back.

Gently at first, the way he always kissed her, as though she were something fragile, something that might break if he pressed too hard.

His lips were warm and soft against hers, and she felt the familiar tenderness in them, the patience, the care.

But she didn't want gentle tonight.

She wanted to feel something.

She wanted to be normal.

So she kissed him harder.

She pressed herself against him, her hands coming up to cup his face, pulling him closer.

She parted her lips, deepened the kiss, let him feel the heat she was trying to summon.

And he responded, tentatively at first, then with more confidence, his mouth opening against hers, his breath quickening.

His hands found her waist.

They rested there for a moment, warm and steady, as though asking a question.
