"Is this okay?" Naveen whispered.
She nodded.
He didn't speak.
He didn't need to.
He just opened his arms, and she came into them.
She fit against him perfectly, her head tucked beneath his chin, her body soft and warm against his chest.
The silk of her saree whispered against his trousers, and the bangles on her wrists pressed small, cool circles into his back as she raised her hands to rest them there.
He could feel her heartbeat, a quick, fluttering thing, and beneath it, the slow rhythm of her breathing beginning to steady.
He held her.
He held her the way a man holds something precious, something he has waited for and cannot quite believe is his.
His arms wrapped around her, one hand resting on the small of her back, that place he had touched only once before, accidentally, and thought about for weeks, and the other cradling the back of her head, his fingers tangling gently in her hair.
He could smell the jasmine oil, the henna, the faint salt of her tears, and beneath all of it, something warm and unmistakably her.
Minutes passed.
He didn't count them.
He didn't care.
The city hummed beyond the windows, the hotel settled into its nighttime quiet, and they stood there, wrapped in each other, and for a little while, the world was very small and very kind.
He felt her shoulders relax, one degree at a time.
He felt her hands unclench against his back, her fingers spreading flat against the fabric of his shirt.
He felt her exhale, long and slow, as though she had been holding her breath for years and had finally, finally let it go.
He pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
She didn't pull away.
After a long moment, a moment that felt both endless and too short, he drew back just enough to look at her.
Her eyes were still damp, but the fear had faded, replaced by something softer.
Something that looked almost like trust.
"Can I, " he started, then stopped.
He didn't want to ruin this.
He didn't want to push too far, too fast.
But he also didn't want to stop, not when she was looking at him like that, not when she was still in his arms, not when the night was still young and they had so much time.
She nodded.
