The taxi pulled up to the apartment complex just as the afternoon sun reached its most merciless peak. Abhi stepped out, squinting against the glare, his single duffel bag slung over his shoulder. The heat hit him like a physical wall—thick, oppressive, the kind of summer heat that made clothes stick to skin and turned every breath into an effort.
He'd been looking forward to this. A month of freedom in the city, close to his new college, staying with family. Kiran had left for his overseas assignment just two days ago, and Anu had insisted—practically begged—that Abhi come stay with them rather than struggle in some cramped hostel. It had seemed like perfect timing.
He hadn't seen Anu in three, maybe four years. Not since he was fifteen, still a gangly kid with a cracking voice. She'd been his favorite during those childhood summers—patient, kind, always ready with a smile and a story. She'd gotten married shortly after, and he'd missed the wedding because of his board exams. Life had moved on.
But nothing—absolutely nothing—could have prepared him for the woman who opened the door.
"Abhi! You're finally here!"
For a moment, he couldn't speak. Couldn't move. Could barely breathe.
Anu stood in the doorway, backlit by the soft glow of the apartment's interior, and she was... transformed. This wasn't the young woman he vaguely remembered from years ago. This was something else entirely.
She wore a simple outfit—a light cotton shirt, pale blue, with short sleeves that ended just above her elbows, and a knee-length skirt in soft cream. Modest by any standard. Conservative, even. But on her body, in this heat, with the thin fabric clinging ever so slightly to her curves...
"Abhi? Are you okay? Come in, come in! You must be exhausted from the journey."
He managed to nod, to step inside, to mumble something about the heat and the traffic. But his eyes—his treacherous, hungry eyes—couldn't stop cataloging every detail.
Her face had matured, the softness of youth giving way to elegant bone structure. High cheekbones, a delicate jawline, lips that were full and naturally pink. Her skin was fair—not pale, but luminous, with a warmth that seemed to glow in the diffused light. A few strands of dark hair had escaped from the loose bun at the nape of her neck, curling slightly against her temple where a faint sheen of perspiration made her skin glisten.
But it was her body that made his mouth go dry.
The shirt—God, that innocent cotton shirt—dbangd over breasts that were full and perfectly shaped, the fabric pulling just slightly across her chest when she moved. He could see the gentle swell, the way they rose and fell with her breathing. The top two buttons were undone—a concession to the heat, nothing more—but it revealed the graceful column of her throat and the barest hint of her collarbone.
"Let me get you some water. You look flushed. This heat is terrible, isn't it?"
She turned toward the kitchen, and Abhi's gaze dropped helplessly to her hips, to the curve of her waist where the shirt tucked loosely into the skirt. The skirt itself ended just below her knees, and when she walked—when she moved with that unconscious feminine grace—he caught glimpses of her calves. Smooth, fair, perfectly shaped. The kind of legs that seemed impossibly soft, that made his fingers itch with the need to touch, to trace the line from ankle to knee and beyond.
*Jesus Christ.*
He'd hit puberty years ago, had experienced his share of teenage fantasies and fumbling encounters with girls his age. But this—this was different. This was a woman. A real woman, with curves and softness and a presence that filled the room and made his teenage hormones roar to life with an intensity that shocked him.
"Here, drink this. You must be so tired."
She handed him a glass of cold water, and their fingers brushed. Just for a second. Just the briefest contact of skin on skin. But he felt it like an electric shock, felt it travel up his arm and straight to his groin.
She didn't notice. Of course she didn't. To her, he was still that kid from years ago. Still the little cousin who used to follow her around during summer holidays. She probably saw the thin mustache he'd been so proud of growing and thought it made him look even younger, more boyish.
But he wasn't a boy anymore. And she... she was everything he'd never known he wanted.
"I've set up the guest room for you," she was saying, leading him down the hallway. "It's small, but it has its own AC, and the college is just a fifteen-minute bus ride from here. Kiran made sure everything was ready before he left."
Kiran. Her husband. The man who got to see her like this every day, who got to touch her, to hold her, to—
Abhi forced the thought away, but it left a bitter taste in his mouth.
The apartment was modest but comfortable, and as Anu showed him around, he found himself watching her constantly. The way she moved through the space with easy familiarity. The way she bent slightly to adjust a curtain, and the shirt rode up just a fraction, revealing a sliver of her lower back above the skirt's waistband. The way she reached up to point out where the extra towels were kept, and her breasts lifted with the motion, straining against the thin cotton.
"Are you hungry? I can make you something to eat."
"No, I'm fine. Thank you, Anu didi."
The honorific felt wrong in his mouth now. Too formal. Too distant. But what else could he call her?
She smiled at him—that same warm, sisterly smile—and something twisted in his chest. She had no idea. No idea what she looked like, what she was doing to him just by existing in the same space.
"Well, you settle in and rest. I'll be in the living room if you need anything."
She left him alone in the guest room, and Abhi sat heavily on the bed, his heart pounding. He could still smell her—something floral and clean, mixed with the faint scent of her skin warmed by the summer heat.
