It was two days that I left shankar's home and reached my home. But time was very still and each day was like a year passing by. I was waiting to go back to the village and find out what the surprise element was. I passed each day with difficulty and was getting frustrated often.
And at last after successfully completing one week at my home I got ready to go to the village.
The marriage too was supposed to be held in two days. So this would be a great time to go to the village. I packed all the stuff and then called and informed shankar about my arrival and said I will be leaving tonight and so will be arriving early morning tomorrow. Shankar too was very much eager in receiving me and welcomed me warmly.
I left my house at night and as informed to Shankar I reached his house by 4 am the next day. There was a lot of difference in the house. I noticed that the whole backyard was looking different and stages were built as if there was a show going to take place. I enquired about it to shankar but he didn't reply anything and said we can talk everything later you just go and take rest as you look tired because of travel. I couldn't force him much and so I just shook my head and went to take rest.
I woke up around 8 am and got myself ready and then reached the dining hall for breakfast. Shankar too that time woke up and he also assisted me during breakfast. While we had our breakfast munna arrived and was asking something about the room decorations. Shankar then ordered munna to take the key from his brother room and then start decorating the room. Munna then asked something about flowers and then shankar turned towards me and asked which flowers do you like most. I asked why he was asking me, but shankar didn't reply to my question and again asked the same question back. I told him Rose's and jasmine. Hearing that munna said shankar that he will decorate the room with Rose's and jasmine.
After our breakfast we sat in the hall way for a while and passing time. After a while I along with shankar went backdoor and saw all the arrangements going on. Shankar now told me that all weddings in the village will be held in their backyard only. The family of the bride and bridegroom both will stay in the backyard itself for a week after the wedding.
Then Shankar showed me a room next to the stage. The room was somewhat like a shape of a hut. Though it was built with bricks and cement it was covered with coconut leaves like opd huts in villages. Shankar told that it was a part of the tradition and so it was kept like a hut. We entered inside the hut shaped room and saw that there was two sections to it. There was a big cot in one section along with an attached bathroom. The decoration works were going on for the cots and munna was standing there decorating the room. There was a screen inbetween the two sections. Inside the room. The screen was so dark that we cannot see the other side but it was clear that even very low voices can be heard from the other side. There was also a old style oil lamp kept at the other section. It was a old type petromax light hanging in the other side of the room.
Shankar then asked munna when the flowers will come and munna said day after tomorrow morning it will arrive and by day after tomorrow night the flower decoration will be complete.
It was clear that this was the wedding night room. Normally husbands are not allowed to watch the wedding night arrangements but here munna was the one doing arrangements. I asked about this too to shankar but as always he didn't reply to my question.
Time passed by and after having lunch I dozed off a little. At around 6:30 PM sahnkar woke me up and said there is an engagement ceremony to be held and we can go and see it. I was bit sleepy but still shankar pulled me and we both went to the engagement ceremony. Many people were gathered for the engagement ceremony and Shankar's father was sitting in the stage while the family of bride and bridegroom were sitting on either sides. Shankar's father now started the engagement and asked the bride family first to offer the exchange of approval. The bride family said they are willing for marriage and as an exchange we offer. Now the elder sister of swetha the bride came and stood in the centre of the stage. Now the king asked the family of the bridegroom to offer the exchange of approval. The bridegroom family said they are willing for marriage and as an exchange we offer. Now munna's elder sister came forward and stood in the centre.
I noticed one thing that out of all the crowd there were only married women and kids. No young girl were present in the crowd. I asked about it and shankar told once a girl attends puberty she is not allowed to come out of the house. Even her own brother or father cannot see them. They will be then kept in home collegeing only and are allowed to meet women only. They teach them all things about marriage life. Meaning after puberty the girls will meet the men only after marriage is held. It was somewhat shocking to hear but my thoughts were about the girls who were staying around 5-6 years without meeting any men because normally in an average girls attend puberty in the age of 13-14 and they will be married at 18 yrs.
Now coming to the engagement, the king now announced, let the engagement begin.
Now the two beautiful women from each family slowly started removing their clothes one by one. They were standing in the stage, and were a bit shy too. But slowly they started removing each bit of cloth from their body. Though they were little bit elder they were of perfect shape and all assets were perfect. I couldn't believe my eyes as such thing was going on in front of the whole village. The two women now were completely naked. They collected all their fallen dress and then put it in the box kept in front of them. Now one member from each family came and locked the box and handed over the key to the other family. I asked shankar what was going on and he said, until the entire marriage ceremony is finished and they leave from his house the women will have to stay like this and the key will be given to each other family as a token of trust. Once the marriage ceremony is completed without any mistakes each family will return back the keys. If there is any mistake from any side then the other party need not return the key and the women with the fault family will be made to serve the punishment.
I watched as both the families now exchanged the keys and then the box with their cloths were kept I the center of the hall to everyone's visibility.
Now there was one day left for the wedding. And all other arrangements had been complete.
