All the ceremonies of Nikhil and Niharika's wedding were complete. The married couple spent their first night in Nikhil's bedroom. Before the wedding, the bedroom was renovated and now it was the couple's bedroom. I reminisced of the time when I had come home as a new bride, and I too spent my first night in the freshly renovated and refurbished room of my husband.
But my fond memories from over a decade ago were eclipsed by the memories of my liaison with my father-in-law over the last week. I was shocked how quickly it had escalated.
I had noticed Baba's lustful gaze for the first time last year, but I never imagined I'd reciprocate positively. Before this, even though I was in awe of his towering personality and physical fitness; this time around I saw him truly as a man for the first time, and I ended up responding to his advances. I felt a sense of shame and arousal at the same time, but the mixture was confusing yet enticing.
I sat alone in my bedroom, looking through the window at the open fields behind the house. The cool breeze swept into the room, providing relief from the mid-afternoon heat.
The house was quiet after a hectic week of ceremonies and celebration. Everyone was tired and resting. The new couple were busy getting used to each other, and the relatives were one by one going back to their homes. Aai, who was the most excited and the busiest person at the wedding, was dead tired. She spent most of the day resting, only coming out to see off some guests or for meals.
After the last guests left, we all four -- Baba, Aai, Nikhil and Niharika sat for lunch together.
"When is your flight?" Baba asked Nikhil.
"Tomorrow night," he replied. The couple were heading off for their honeymoon. The flight was scheduled from Mumbai, which was six hours away from here by road.
"Alright. I'll drop you two and then come back," Baba said.
"You'll drive alone all the way and back again?" Aai asked out of concern.
"Yes. The driver is on leave, and I'm used to driving long distances. You know how much I love to drive," Baba replied.
"But why do you have to drive so much in one day? You will reach Mumbai in the evening and start your return journey that same night? Why don't you stay the night there and come back the next day?" Aai said, sounding concerned.
She was right. Even if they set out early in the afternoon, they would reach Mumbai by evening, and if Baba drove back without any stoppages, he still wouldn't be back before midnight. Plus, the roads in the countryside were narrow, so driving at night was risky.
"Yeah... you're correct. I'll stay there for a night and head out the next morning. I'll be home for lunch," Baba replied.
"Why don't you come to drop us, Aai? That way Baba will have company," Nikhil interjected.
"No... no... This last month leading up to your wedding has been very hectic. Now I'm tired. Plus, my car sickness will ruin the beginning of your honeymoon," Aai replied.
I was listening to the conversation without contributing to it. I was quietly eating my meal, watching and listening.
"Shalini. Do you want to go with them?" Aai asked.
I stopped eating, looked at Aai and then the rest of them. They were all looking at me, waiting for my answer.
"I don't mind, but you'll be alone here, Aai?" I replied.
"Naa... don't worry about that. The maids are there for company all day, and I'll ask Shaku Bai to stay the night. Anyway, you'll be bored here alone as I'll be resting in my room all day," Aai said.
I looked at Baba, who kept a straight face. I then looked at Nikhil and Niharika. They were smiling. I got along well with Niharika during the wedding, and Nikhil was also dear to me, so they seemed happy about the idea. I was sure Baba's mind was working overtime on this suggestion. Aai was right. Without anything to stay busy, this place was pretty boring. Instead, a road trip was a better idea. And my mind too started concocting naughty ideas as well, which excited me.
"Hmmm... sounds good. I'll go with you, Baba," I said, trying to sound as normal as I could, even though I was aroused with the idea of staying with Baba overnight.
"So that settles it then. I'll book two rooms. We will head out after lunch tomorrow," Baba said, concluding the discussion.
