Adultery My Friend Wants My Mother
Chapter 21: The Weight

The first thing Madhu felt when she woke was the ache.

It was not the sharp, localised pain of a pulled muscle or a twisted ankle. It was deeper than that, spread out across her lower back and hips like a stain, a dull, heavy throb that seemed to have settled into the very bones of her. She lay still for a moment, her eyes closed, cataloguing it—the soreness in her thighs, the faint tenderness between her legs, the strange looseness in her belly that she had come to recognise as the aftermath of being filled. Her body was a ledger, and every entry in it had been written by a man who was not her husband.

Beside her, Rajesh slept on. His breathing was slow and even, his face slack, one arm flung across the mattress. He had come home tired as always, eaten his dinner without complaint, watched the news for twenty minutes, and fallen asleep before ten. He had not touched her. He had not needed to. He had no idea that his wife had spent the afternoon on another man's bed, or that she had lain awake until midnight watching a video of herself being fucked, or that she had fallen asleep with the taste of that man's name on her tongue.

Madhu opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. The fan turned slowly above her, moving the thick, humid air without cooling it. Outside, the first grey light of morning was seeping through the curtains, and somewhere in the distance a temple bell was ringing. Normal sounds. Ordinary sounds. The sounds of a life that had once felt like the whole of her and now felt like a costume.

And then the thought came, as it did every morning now, sliding into her chest with a weight that was heavier than any ache.

*She did not want to stop.*

That was the truth she had been circling for weeks, the truth she had finally admitted to herself somewhere in the dark hours of the previous night while the video played on her phone and her body hummed with borrowed pleasure. She had told herself, in the beginning, that this was temporary. A phase. A madness that would burn itself out. She had told herself that she would end it, that she would go back to being the woman she had been, that the guilt would eventually win.

But the guilt had not won. The guilt had simply become quieter, a background hum beneath the louder, more insistent rhythm of her own desire. And now, lying here beside her sleeping husband, her body sore from another man's use, Madhu understood that she was no longer fighting. She was not resisting. She was not waiting to be saved.

She was choosing this. Every single day, with every lie, with every secret meeting, with every photo and video and moan, she was choosing it. And she was going to keep choosing it.

She sat up slowly, wincing as the movement pulled at her back. The sheet slid down her body, and she looked at herself—the softness of her belly, the heaviness of her breasts, the faint marks on her hips that Rajesh had not noticed because Rajesh did not look closely anymore. She touched her hip, pressing her thumb into the bruise, and felt the small, secret pleasure of knowing where it had come from.

Then she swung her legs off the bed and stood.

***

The morning routine was a performance, and she had become very good at it. She had perfected the timing, the expressions, the small gestures. By the time Rajesh woke, the coffee was already brewing and the kitchen smelled of cardamom and roasted beans. By the time he stumbled out of the bedroom, scratching his stomach and yawning, she was at the stove, and her face was arranged into the calm, warm smile of a wife who had slept well and had nothing to hide.

"Good morning," she said.

"Morning." His voice was thick with sleep. He came up behind her and pressed a kiss to the back of her head—absent, automatic—and then moved to the table to open the newspaper.

"How was your sleep?" she asked.

"Fine. Did not even hear you come to bed."

She had come to bed after midnight, after the video, after the secret phone had been hidden back under the pillow. She had slipped between the sheets as quietly as she could, and he had not stirred. "I was working late," she said. "The data entry."

"Hmm." He was already reading. He did not ask more.

She served him breakfast—idlis, sambar, coconut chutney, coffee—and he ate it while scanning the headlines, occasionally grunting at something. The routine was so familiar that she could do it with half her mind, and the other half drifted, as it always did now, to the small dark rectangle of the secret phone hidden under her pillow, waiting for her.

Vinay came out at seven-thirty. He was showered and dressed, his hair still damp, his bag over his shoulder. He looked well, she noticed—the tension that had lived in his shoulders for months had eased, and his face had filled out a little. He was sleeping better. He was eating better. He was, she realised, becoming his own person, building a life that did not revolve around her and her secrets.

"Good morning, Amma," he said.

"Good morning. Sit, eat."

"I will eat at the canteen," he said, but he took a glass of water and sat down anyway, at the edge of the chair, restless.

"You are going to the library?" she asked.

"Yes. Ananya and I have a mock test at nine."

Ananya. The name had become a regular feature of their mornings now, spoken with a careful, almost shy casualness that told her more than words could. Her son was in love. Or falling in love. Or at least walking toward it with the slow, cautious tread of a boy who had been burned by other people's mistakes and did not want to make his own.

"That is good," she said. "Study well."

"We will." He finished his water, stood up, and paused. "Amma."

"Yes?"

"You look tired," he said. He said it lightly, but she saw his eyes move over her face—the faint shadows under her eyes, the pallor that the morning light exposed. "Are you sleeping enough?"

She smiled. "Just the heat. And work. Nothing serious."

He nodded, but he did not look entirely convinced. He had become more attentive again in the last few weeks—not suspicious, not watchful, but attentive. He noticed things now. He noticed when she was tired, when she was quiet, when she was somewhere else. He noticed, and he asked, and he accepted her answers, but the asking itself was a reminder that he was paying attention. That he had not entirely forgotten.

She watched him go, and then Rajesh stood too, folding the newspaper, adjusting his shirt.

"I will be late today," he said. "There is a shipment coming in the evening. The new machinery."

"Take care."

He kissed her forehead, gathered his things, and left. The door clicked shut. And Madhu was alone.

She stood in the middle of the kitchen for a long moment, listening to the silence. The fan turned. The fridge hummed. The sounds of the city rose from the street below—the milkman, the sweepers, the first buses. Normal sounds. And underneath them, the low, insistent beat of her own secret life, waiting to be lived.

She went to the bedroom, locked the door, and pulled the secret phone out from under the pillow.

***

There were three messages waiting.

*Good morning, my whore.*

*Did you watch the video?*

*Tell me how many times.*

She read them twice, and felt the warmth spread through her chest—that warmth she had come to depend on, that warmth that made the rest of her life feel like an interval between meetings. She typed back, her thumbs moving quickly.

*Good morning. Yes. Twice. Then I touched myself.*

The reply came almost instantly.

*Good girl. Tell me more.*

She leaned against the bedroom wall, the phone pressed close, and typed out the details—how she had watched it in the dark, how she had kept the volume low so Rajesh would not wake, how she had come silently with her hand over her mouth. And as she typed, she felt the familiar heat gather between her legs, the familiar ache deepen.

*Come today,* he wrote. *Noon. I want to taste you.*

*Rajesh will be at work. Vinay will be at the library.*

*Then come.*

She smiled, and hid the phone back under the pillow, and went to start her work.

***

The work, though, did not go well. It had not gone well for weeks now, and this morning was worse than usual. She sat at her laptop, opened the Virtual Desktop, and stared at the rows of customer records waiting to be entered. Names. Addresses. Purchase histories. Numbers upon numbers. The kind of work that required a still mind and steady concentration, neither of which she had.

She typed. She made an error. She corrected it. She typed again. Her mind drifted to Gautham—to his voice, to his hands, to the way he had called her *my whore* in the message—and then to the bruise on her hip, and then to the ache in her back, and then back to the screen, where the rows waited, patient and indifferent.

By eleven o'clock she had completed only half of what she had planned. By eleven-thirty she had made three more errors. She checked her phone. Nothing new. She checked it again at eleven-forty, and then at eleven-fifty, and then she told herself she was being ridiculous, and then at noon she stood up, closed the laptop, and went to get ready.

She changed into a plain cotton saree—pale green, one of the oldest ones—and tied her hair back. She did not put on makeup. She did not take a bag. She simply picked up her house keys and her ordinary phone, and left.

The auto took fifteen minutes. The city was grey and humid, the monsoon sky low and heavy, and the streets were busy in the way they always were at midday. She sat in the back, watching the shops and the flower stalls and the men at tea shops slide past, and she felt the familiar dissociation—the sense of stepping out of one life and into another, of becoming, for a few hours, a different woman.

She climbed the stairs to his building slowly. At his door she paused, and knocked.

He opened it. He was wearing a loose white shirt and black shorts, his hair damp from a shower, and he looked at her the way he always looked at her—slowly, from head to foot, taking her in, claiming her with his eyes.

"You came in a saree," he said.

"I always come in a saree."

"Good. Take it off."

She stepped inside, and he locked the door behind her, and she unwrapped the saree slowly while he watched from the sofa, smoking. The blouse, the petticoat, the underwear—all of it came off, and she stood before him naked, her body soft and pale in the dim light, her breasts heavy, her hips still marked with the fading bruises of the past weeks.

"Come here," he said.

She walked to him. He put out the cigarette and reached for her, pulling her onto his lap, and she straddled him, her legs on either side of his hips, her breasts level with his face. He looked up at her, and then he lowered his mouth to her breast and sucked, and she arched and moaned and forgot, for a while, everything else.

***

The session that afternoon was slower than usual. He seemed in no hurry. He laid her on the bed and took his time, kissing his way down her body, and by the time his mouth found her pussy she was already wet and shaking. He licked her slowly, thoroughly, his tongue flat and warm against her clit, his fingers sliding into her, and he did not stop when she came the first time. He kept going, coaxing a second orgasm out of her, and then a third, until she was oversensitive and gasping and pushing at his head.

Then he climbed over her and pushed his cock into her.

She gasped—she always gasped, no matter how many times—at the fullness, the stretch, the sudden completion. He moved slowly, his hips rolling, his cock sliding deep and then almost all the way out and then deep again, and she wrapped her legs around him and let him take her at his pace. The bed creaked beneath them. The fan turned above them. And she closed her eyes and gave herself to it, the way she had learned to give herself to it, without thought and without resistance.

He fucked her through one position and then another—on her side, then from behind, then on top—and she followed him wherever he wanted to go, her body already trained to obey. When he finally came, it was inside her, and she felt the hot pulses fill her and held him there with her legs locked around his waist, not wanting to lose it.

Afterward, they lay together, and he lit another cigarette, and she lay with her head on his chest.

"You are quiet today," he said.

"I am tired," she said.

"From what?"

"From everything." She did not elaborate. But it was true. She was tired—tired of the lying, the planning, the remembering, the forgetting, the small constant effort of living two lives. She was tired in a way that sleep could not fix.

He did not press her. He simply stroked her hair and smoked, and the afternoon light shifted slowly across the wall, and somewhere in the distance a dog barked, and the city went on about its business.

The days that followed were ordinary and strange at once. The ordinary part was the surface—the cooking, the cleaning, the work, the temple visits, the small conversations with neighbours. The strange part was underneath, where her body was beginning to talk to her.

It started with the backache. A dull, persistent throb in her lower back that she had first noticed that morning after watching the video, and which did not go away. It was there when she woke, there when she sat, there when she stood, a low constant hum of discomfort that became louder whenever she moved. She told herself it was age. She told herself it was the housework, the sweeping, the bending, the lifting of water vessels. She told herself it was the heat.

But she knew, somewhere beneath the lie, that it was none of those things. She knew it was him. She knew it was the hours on her back and her stomach and her knees, the legs held open, the hips gripped, the body used. Her body was not twenty anymore. It was forty-two, and it was being asked to do things it had not been asked to do in twenty years, and it was beginning to complain.

The spotting came next. It began four days after her period had ended—a faint brown stain on her underwear, light enough to be missed but present enough to notice. She stood in the bathroom and looked at it, and felt the first real flicker of alarm. She was forty-two. She had a regular cycle. She had never had spotting between periods, not once, not even in the early days of marriage.

She thought of the obvious first. Could she be pregnant? The thought was absurd and not absurd at once. She had not been careful—she had never been careful—and Gautham had come inside her more times than she could count. She had thought about it in passing, but she had never truly faced it. A forty-two-year-old married woman, pregnant with her lover's child. The thought was enough to make her sit down.

But the timing was wrong, she told herself. She had just had her period. She had been bleeding only two weeks ago. It was too early for pregnancy, too late for ovulation. It had to be something else. Stress, perhaps. Or the strain of the body. Or the beginning of something more serious, something that would require a doctor.

She did not go to a doctor. She told herself she would, and then she did not, and the days passed and the spotting continued, faint and irregular, and she pushed it to the back of her mind and went on with her life.

The sitting was the worst of it. Her work required hours in front of the laptop, and after an hour her lower back would begin to ache, and after two it would be a burning throb that spread down into her hips. She began to shift in her chair, to stand up and stretch every twenty minutes, to work in short bursts and take long breaks. Her productivity, already poor, fell further. And the more she fell behind, the more stress she felt, and the more stress she felt, the more she reached for her phone and messaged Gautham instead of finishing her files.

She began to need longer to recover after each session with him. In the early days, she would leave his apartment and go straight home and cook dinner as if nothing had happened. Now, she would come home and lie down for an hour before she could face the kitchen. She would blame it on a headache, on the heat, on the work. And Rajesh and Vinay would believe her, because why would they not?

Rajesh noticed the slower movements before he noticed anything else. One evening, after dinner, as she carried the plates to the kitchen, he watched her from the table and said, with a faint frown:

"You are walking like an old woman these days. Are you alright? Shall I take you to the doctor?"

She turned, the plates stacked in her hands, and smiled. "Just age and housework," she said. "Nothing serious. I will rest more."

"You have been saying that for two weeks," he said.

"Then I will say it for two more," she said lightly. "Eat your sweet. I made it for you."

He let it go. He always let it go. That was the thing about Rajesh—he trusted her, and his trust was a room she could move around in freely, and she had been using it, and would keep using it, and he would never know.

That night, she lay in bed and pressed her hand to her lower back and thought about her body, and about the child she might be carrying, and about the man who had put it there. And she felt, for the first time, not guilt but fear. A practical, unsentimental fear. The kind that came with a bill.

The message from her company came on a Thursday morning.

She had been half expecting it. Her supervisor, Mrs. Nair, had been sending warnings for weeks now—short, clipped messages pointing out errors and delays—and Madhu had been promising to fix them and then forgetting. She had known it was building. She had known that the patience of a company was not infinite. But she had not expected it to be so formal, or so final.

It came as an email, which was unusual. Mrs. Nair normally used WhatsApp. The email had a subject line in bold: *Performance Review and Contract Renewal—Urgent*. Madhu opened it with a knot in her stomach and read it slowly.

*Dear Madhu,*

*This is to formally inform you that your performance over the last two months has fallen significantly below the required standard. There have been repeated delays in submission, an increase in data errors, and a decline in overall productivity. While we value your long association with the company, we are unable to continue indefinitely on the present basis.*

*You are hereby given ten working days to improve your performance to the required standard. If, at the end of this period, there is no measurable improvement, your contract will not be renewed.*

*We hope you will take this seriously.*

*Regards,*
*Mrs. Nair*
*Supervisor, Data Operations*

Madhu read it twice, then a third time, and then she sat back in her chair and felt the first true panic she had experienced in months. Not sexual panic. Not the flutter of desire or the throb of guilt. Practical panic. Money panic. The kind that had a number attached to it.

Because the truth was that her income mattered. It had started as a small supplement, a way to help with the household expenses, but over three years it had grown into something the family depended on. Rajesh's salary covered the rent and the food and the college fees, but the extras—the clothes, the medical bills, the small savings, the money for Vinay's future—had come from her. And if her income stopped, the household would have to shrink. And if the household shrank, there would be questions. And questions, in her life, were dangerous.

She thought about it all morning, and the more she thought, the more frightened she became. Because the other truth, the deeper truth, was that she was spending more and more time at Gautham's apartment, and less and less time at her laptop. The two things were connected. Her affair was eating her work. Her work was eating her sleep. And her sleep was being eaten by the small hours spent watching videos of herself being fucked.

She made a resolution. She would fix it. She would work harder in the mornings, before the afternoons pulled her away. She would concentrate. She would stop checking her phone every twenty minutes. She would stop, in short, being a woman with a secret and start being a woman with a job.

The resolution lasted one day.

On Friday morning she sat down at nine o'clock with the best of intentions. She opened the VDI, pulled up the batch, and began to type. She typed carefully, slowly, checking each entry twice. And for the first hour it worked. She completed twenty records without a single error.

Then at ten-thirty her phone buzzed—the secret phone, hidden in her pouch—and she looked, and it was Gautham, and he had sent a photo. Just a photo, casual, of himself at his desk at work, shirt open, hair falling over his forehead, a faint smile. Nothing sexual. Nothing urgent. Just him.

And she looked at it for ten minutes, and by the time she looked up she had lost the thread of the work, and the next entry she typed had the wrong pin code, and she had to stop and correct it, and then she was behind again, and then she was stressed, and then she messaged him back.

*Are you free today?*

*Always,* he wrote.

*Come to me at noon.*

And so it went. Every day, the same. She would work, she would lose the thread, she would message him, she would go to him, and the work would wait. She was chasing a moving target, and she was losing.

On Monday she finally told him about it. She was lying on his bed, her body still warm from him, her hair spread on the pillow, and she said, her voice flat:

"My office is giving me trouble. They might remove me."

He was at the window, smoking. He turned and looked at her. "Remove you? From what?"

"From the job. The data entry. They sent a formal warning. Ten days to improve or they will not renew the contract."

He took a slow drag of the cigarette and exhaled toward the ceiling. "How bad is it?"

"Bad enough." She closed her eyes. "The money matters. Rajesh's salary covers the essentials, but the extras... the savings, Vinay's coaching fees, the medical bills. If I lose this, everything gets tighter."

"Then let them," he said, casually, as if it were nothing. "Let them remove you. I can take care of you if needed."

She opened her eyes and looked at him. "Take care of me? What does that mean?"

"It means what it means." He stubbed out the cigarette. "If you need money, I have money. The real estate work pays well. I have no expenses to speak of. I can help."

"Help how? Would you give me money? Every month?"

"If you needed it." He came and sat on the edge of the bed, looking down at her. "Why does it surprise you? I told you—you are mine. And a man takes care of what is his."

Madhu lay there and let the words settle over her. And she felt two things at once, and they were in conflict. The first was comfort—a deep, warm comfort at the thought that she was not alone, that there was someone who would catch her if she fell. The second was unease—a cold, quiet unease at the thought of being *kept*, of being supported by a man who was not her husband, of her whole life slowly tilting toward him until he became the centre of it.

"Rajesh would notice," she said. "If money came in. He would ask where it came from."

"Then we would have to be careful," Gautham said. "But that is nothing new for us, is it?"

She laughed—a short, tired laugh. "No. That is nothing new."

He leaned down and kissed her. "Do not worry about it now. The ten days are not over. Work hard, and if it does not work out, we will find a way. I will find a way. Trust me."

She looked up at him, at his young, confident face, and she thought: *you are twenty-one years old, and you are telling a forty-two-year-old woman not to worry, and somehow it is the most reassuring thing anyone has said to me in years.* And she felt the first small shift, the first tentative lean, in the balance of her life.

The news came on a Wednesday, in the afternoon, in his apartment, after a long slow session that had left her limp and loose on the bed.

He was sitting up, the sheet around his waist, his back against the headboard, and he said it in the same tone he might have used to mention the weather.

"My parents have fixed the first meeting. Sunday."

She turned her head on the pillow and looked at him. "Meeting?"

"With a girl's family. For the marriage." He said it without ceremony. "A family from Coimbatore. The girl is a B.Com graduate. Twenty-two. They are coming to the house on Sunday."

Madhu lay very still. She had known it was coming—he had mentioned it two weeks ago, the photos, the cousins' weddings, his mother's sudden urgency. She had known it was coming. But knowing a thing and hearing it are not the same.

"Sunday," she said, her voice carefully flat.

"Yes."

She sat up slowly, pulling the sheet to her chest, and looked at the wall. "What is she like? The girl?"

"Ordinary, I think. Fair, slim, quiet. Well-educated. From a decent family." He shrugged. "I have seen a photo. Nothing is decided. This is only the first meeting. There will be more."

"More girls?"

"More meetings. More families. It goes on for months, sometimes. My mother is thorough."

Madhu was quiet for a long moment. The fan turned. The afternoon light was fading, the room going soft and grey. And in the quiet, a question formed in her chest and grew until she could not hold it anymore.

"And what happens to me after that?"

He looked at her. He did not pretend not to understand. That was one of the things about him—he never pretended. He was cruel, and he was selfish, and he was calculating, but he was not a liar, not about the important things.

"What do you want to happen?" he asked.

"I asked you first."

He smiled slightly. "That is not an answer."

"I do not have an answer yet." She pulled her knees up to her chest, the sheet wrapped around her, and looked at him. "Tell me what you want. Then I will tell you what I want."

He studied her for a moment. Then he reached for a cigarette, lit it, and leaned back.

"I want to keep you," he said simply. "When I marry, I do not want to lose you. I want you still in my life. Still in my bed, when we can manage it. The girl... she will be a wife. She will be part of the family, part of the house, part of everything that is proper. But you—" he paused, the cigarette glowing— "you are the thing I chose. The thing I wanted. That does not change because I marry."

Madhu felt her throat tighten. "You will have a wife. A young wife. A girl of twenty-two. You will sleep with her. You will probably fall in love with her. And what will I be then? The older woman on the side? The aunty who comes in the afternoon?"

"You will be mine," he said, unbothered by her words. "And she will be mine too. But differently. She will have the house, the name, the family. You will have the rest." He took a drag. "If you want it."

"And if I do not want it?"

"Then you tell me now, and I will prepare myself."

Madhu looked at him. At his young, beautiful face, so certain, so calm, so utterly sure of what he wanted. And she thought of the alternative—of ending it, of going back, of becoming just another neighbour's wife he had once slept with. She thought of the years ahead, of the greyness of the life she had lived before him, of the slow, comfortable dying that had been her marriage.

She could not go back. She already knew that. She had known it that first morning after the video.

"I want to be kept," she said quietly. "But not as a secret. Not as something shameful. If you are going to keep me, then keep me properly. Look after me. Do not just use me and throw me away when the wife comes."

His eyes softened slightly. He reached out and took her hand.

"I will not throw you away," he said. "I told you. You are the one I chose."

She held his hand, and looked at their joined fingers, and felt the thing in her chest settle—not into peace, exactly, but into a shape. A direction. A decision.

"Then keep me," she said.

That conversation changed something in her. Not immediately, not dramatically, but slowly, over the days that followed. She became more proactive. She began to initiate. She began to send messages without waiting for him, began to send videos without being asked, began to arrive early at his apartment instead of on time. She began to dress for him with a new kind of care, choosing the sarees he liked, the colours he had said suited her.

The power balance shifted. It was small, but she felt it. Before, she had been the one being pursued, the one resisting, the one whose attention had to be won. Now, she was the one chasing. Not desperately—not yet—but with an edge of anxiety, with the knowledge that there was now a deadline, a rival, a girl of twenty-two in Coimbatore who might, at some point, take the place that Madhu had come to think of as hers.

She began to think about the future in a way she had never done before. She began to imagine it—a future in which Gautham was married and she was still his, sneaking away to a hotel room or a rented flat, meeting in the afternoons while the wife was at her own family's house, living a life that was half one thing and half another. She began to imagine herself as a woman with a secret for years, not months. She began to imagine the grandchildren, the anniversaries, the slow accumulation of lies.

And she began to wonder how long a woman could live like that before she broke.

But the wondering did not slow her down. It made her faster. It made her more eager. It made her, in her own way, more his.

The tablets had become a regular part of their meetings. She had learned to take half of one before she arrived, so that the loosening came on slowly, gently, in the middle of things, and she could ride it rather than be thrown by it. It made her body warm and sensitive, made every touch a small event, made her own thoughts slower and looser and more honest.

It was on one such afternoon—a Thursday, the rain coming down hard against the windows, the room dim and close—that she began to talk.

They had finished, and they were lying tangled together on the bed, and she was not in a hurry to leave. The tablet was still working in her, the edges of the world soft, and the words began to come out of her without her arranging them first.

"Do you know what I used to feel?" she said, her cheek against his chest. "Before you. Before all of this."

"What did you feel?"

"Nothing." She said it simply, because under the tablet everything was simple. "I used to wake up, and cook, and work, and clean, and cook again, and sleep. Every day the same. And I used to feel nothing. Not unhappy. Not unhappy exactly. Just... empty. Like a vessel. Like a thing that did things. I would look at the day and think, this is the rest of my life. This and nothing else. And it was fine. It was a good life. But it was nothing."

He did not interrupt. He stroked her hair and listened.

"I used to dream about other lives," she said. "When I was young. Before I married. I wanted to be a teacher. Did you know that? I wanted to teach. I finished college, I was good at it, and I thought, maybe I will be a teacher, maybe I will have a small college, maybe I will see the world a little. And then Rajesh came, and I married at nineteen, and there was Vinay, and then there was nothing. Just the house. Just the days. And I was happy—I was—but the dream went somewhere, and I forgot it. And now, when I look at you, I remember it. I remember there was a girl who wanted things."

"What did she want?" he asked.

"Everything." Madhu laughed, a soft, broken sound. "She wanted everything. And she got a life where she wanted nothing, and she was told to be grateful, and she was grateful, and now she is forty-two and she is lying in a boy's bed and talking too much."

"You are not talking too much," he said. "Tell me more."

So she told him more. She told him about Vinay—about his childhood, about the fever when he was six that had terrified her, about the way he had always been a serious boy, too serious, always worried about things he did not need to worry about. She told him about her hope that he would do well, that he would get out of this life and into something better, that he would not make the mistakes she had made. She told him about the coaching fees, the savings, the small careful plans she had made for him.

She told him about Rajesh. About how they had met, about how he had seemed to her when she was nineteen—serious, steady, safe. About how he had been a good man, a decent man, a man who had never raised his voice or his hand. About how, over twenty-two years, he had slowly stopped seeing her, had become a presence rather than a person, a provider rather than a partner. About how she did not blame him, exactly, because she had stopped seeing him too.

"I am not unhappy with him," she said. "That is the thing. Everyone will tell you—the affair, the cheating, it is because the wife is unhappy. But I was not unhappy. I was just... finished. The marriage was finished. It was over, and neither of us noticed, and we just kept going. And then you came, and you woke me up, and now I cannot go back to sleep."

The words hung in the room. The rain fell. And Gautham was quiet for a long time, holding her.

Then, when she had grown sleepy and was almost drifting, he spoke. And what he said made her open her eyes.

"The fever," he said, his voice calm and thoughtful. "When Vinay was six. You said he had a fever that scared you. But you also said you did not sleep for four nights. You said you sat with him the whole time, in the small chair by his cot, and you did not eat. And you said you prayed to the small Ganesha at the corner of the room."

Madhu blinked. She had told him all this, yes—but she had told it in a scattered, rambling way, under the tablet, and she had not expected him to remember. "You remembered that."

"I remember everything you tell me," he said. "That is the difference between me and your husband. He hears and forgets. I hear and keep."

She turned and looked at him. And a new kind of fear touched her. Small and cold.

"You keep it," she repeated.

"Yes."

"Everything? Everything I have told you?"

"Everything." He smiled, that slow, knowing smile. "Your dreams. Your worries. The name of the small Ganesha. The fact that you wanted to be a teacher. The exact amount of Vinay's coaching fee. The way you feel about the marriage being finished. The four nights you sat by his cot. All of it. You are not just a body to me, Madhu. If I only wanted a body, I would have gone back to Padma. You are a whole person, and I want the whole person. So yes, I keep the pieces."

She lay there and let it sink in. And she understood, with a clarity that the tablet made sharp and clean, that he was not just owning her body. He was collecting her life. He knew things about her that Rajesh had forgotten, that Vinay had never known. He had pieces of her that she had not given to anyone in twenty years. And that meant that he did not just have her body and her desire. He had her story.

And a woman whose story was held by another man was a woman who could never entirely go back.

"You are frightening," she said quietly.

"Am I?"

"Yes." She pulled the sheet tighter around herself. "You are collecting me. Piece by piece. And one day there will be nothing left of me that is not yours."

He laughed, low and warm. "That is the plan."

She lay awake after that, even as he dozed beside her, and she turned the thought over and over in her mind. *He is collecting me.* And she felt, in the same breath, fear and a strange, deep satisfaction. Because it was better, she decided, to be collected by someone who wanted all of her than to be overlooked by someone who wanted none.

The invitation came as a surprise.

Mrs. Padma stopped her in the corridor on a Saturday afternoon—she was coming up from the market, and Padma was standing by the water tap with a small steel tumbler in her hand, looking as though she had been waiting.

"Madhu," she said. "Come for tea tomorrow. Afternoon. At my place."

Madhu paused, the vegetable bag heavy in her hand. "Tea? Just us?"

"Lakshmi will be there too." Padma's eyes were steady. "Just tea. Just talk. No... nothing else. But we should talk, the three of us. It has been a long time."

Madhu thought about it. Sunday afternoon—Rajesh would be home, resting, and Vinay would be with Ananya, and there would be nothing pressing. She had planned to rest. She had planned to lie down and let her back recover.

"Alright," she said. "Tomorrow. What time?"

"Four o'clock."

And so on Sunday, at four, Madhu went down two floors to Mrs. Padma's apartment, and found Mrs. Lakshmi already there.

It was strange to be in Padma's home as a guest, without Gautham, without the pretext of sex. The apartment was small and neat, like her own, with the same kind of furniture, the same kind of pictures on the walls, the same faint smell of cooking. Padma served tea and a plate of mixture, and the three of them sat on the sofa and the chairs, and for a while they talked about ordinary things—the monsoon, the price of vegetables, the daughter's marriage, the son's tuition classes.

Then Padma set down her cup, and looked at Madhu, and said, quietly:

"He is going to marry."

Madhu nodded slowly. "I know. He told me. Sunday, the first meeting."

Mrs. Lakshmi, who had been silent, looked up. "You knew?"

"Yes."

"Of course you knew," Lakshmi said, and there was a faint bitterness in her voice. "You are the one he tells things to."

There was a small silence. Then Padma, who had always been the more straightforward of the two, said what was on everyone's mind.

"We all know what this means. He is going to be married. He will have a wife. And then..." She spread her hands. "And then what will happen to us?"

Madhu said nothing.

"He has three of us now," Lakshmi said. "Three women in one building, all of us waiting for the same man. And now a fourth, in Coimbatore, who will get the ring and the name and the family. What happens to us when he has a wife?"

"He says he will keep us," Madhu said.

"He says." Lakshmi shook her head. "He says a lot of things. He said he would keep me too, once. Then he stopped coming for two weeks. And now he is back, because you are here and he wants to keep you, and I am convenient. Convenient." She said the word as if it tasted of something sour.

Madhu looked at her. The older woman's face was tired, the lines deeper than they had been, and Madhu saw in it a version of her own future. "You are not convenient," she said. "You are one of us."

"There is no us," Lakshmi said. "There is him, and there is us, and the two things are not the same. You will learn that, Madhu. Favourites also get left behind."

The words hung in the air. Padma reached over and put her hand on Lakshmi's knee, a small gesture of comfort, and Madhu noticed it—noticed the way Lakshmi leaned into it, the way the two of them had become something more than neighbours. She had known, vaguely, that they were seeing each other. But watching them now, she understood that the two of them had found something real in each other—a refuge, a softness—while she had found only the hunger of a young man who wanted everything and gave nothing.

"You two," Madhu said quietly. "You have each other."

Padma did not deny it. She looked at Lakshmi, and Lakshmi looked at her, and something passed between them. "Yes," Padma said. "We do. But that is different. That is... comfort. He is the hunger."

"Then maybe comfort is better," Madhu said.

"Maybe." Padma looked at her. "But you are not comfort, Madhu. You are the hunger too. That is why he chose you. Because you are like him. You want things. You are not content."

Madhu was quiet. It was true. She had known it for a while now. She was not content. She had never been content. And content was what the two women across from her had settled for, and there was a peace in it, and a sadness too.

"I do not know what I am," she said finally.

The conversation drifted after that, into softer things—the daughter's new home, the son's exams, the small gossip of the building. And then, somehow, without any decision being made, the three of them ended up in Padma's bedroom, on her bed, and the tea and the mixture were forgotten.

It was not like the threesomes with Gautham—the performance, the competition, the commands. This was slow and quiet and almost accidental. Padma touched Madhu's face, and then her neck, and then kissed her softly, and Lakshmi watched, and then joined. They undressed each other slowly, and they touched each other with the same gentle curiosity they had shown each other before, and for a while there was no Gautham at all—no deadline, no rivalry, no hunger.

Madhu lay on her back and let Padma's mouth find her breast, and Lakshmi's fingers find her between her legs, and she came quietly, with a soft moan, and it was different from anything she had with him. It was not a conquest. It was not a performance. It was a shared understanding—three women who had been taken by the same man, finding each other in the wreckage.

Afterward, they lay together, the three of them, and Padma said, softly, "Whatever happens with him, we have this."

"Yes," Lakshmi said.

Madhu looked at the ceiling and said nothing. But she thought: *this is not enough. This is good, but it is not enough.* And she understood, then, that she was not like them. They had found each other. She had found Gautham.

While Madhu's life twisted itself tighter around a man who was not her husband, her son was quietly building a life of his own.

Vinay was happy. That was the word for it, though he would not have used it himself. He was lighter, freer, more himself than he had been in years. The tension of the house—the suspicion, the watchfulness, the feeling of being the only one who knew—had eased. He no longer felt like a spy in his own home. He no longer felt like the keeper of a secret. He simply lived, and studied, and spent his hours with Ananya, and it was good.

They studied together every day now. The library, the college canteen, the bench near the pond. They took their mock tests side by side, and compared answers, and argued about logic, and laughed when they both got the same question wrong. She was clever, and quick, and she had a dry humour that he had not expected from her quiet exterior. And she was kind, in a way that did not ask for anything in return.

He had not told her everything. He had told her some. But there were things he had not said—the wager, the photos, the foursome, the sheer extent of the madness. He had not wanted to overwhelm her. He had wanted, for a little while, to keep something clean.

But sometimes, sitting beside her in the library, he would look up from his book and think about the mess at home, and it would hit him all over again—the strangeness of it, the depth of it. His mother, forty-two years old, keeping a secret life with a man five years younger than himself. His father, kind and trusting, sleeping beside a woman who smelled of another man's cigarettes. And himself, the only one who saw it all, carrying the knowledge like a stone in his chest.

And yet, somehow, it was bearable now. He had made his peace with it. He had decided, finally, to let his mother live her life and live his own. He had given her the chance; she was taking it; the rest was hers.

He began to come home later. Not out of avoidance—not anymore—but simply because he was busy. He stayed at the library until six or seven, studying, and sometimes went to a film with Ananya, and sometimes walked her to her bus. He arrived home in time for dinner, and he ate with his parents, and he talked about his day, and he was present in a way he had not been for months.

And Madhu, watching him, was glad. Glad that her son had found something good. Glad that the damage she had done to him had healed, or was healing. And also—she was honest enough to admit it to herself—glad that his distance gave her more free hours. His late evenings, his weekends with Ananya, were hours she could spend with Gautham.

It was the best arrangement she could have hoped for. And it was, she knew, entirely accidental.

But one evening, the balance shifted again.

It was a Tuesday, and she had been to see Gautham in the afternoon. It had been a long session—he had taken her twice, and she was tired and sore and still slightly drugged, and she had come home and lain down, and had not got up until dinner. Rajesh was working late. Vinay, she had assumed, was at the library until seven. So she had allowed herself to lie on the sofa in the living room, in her nightie, and to stare at nothing, and to let the tiredness wash over her.

And then the door had opened, and Vinay had walked in.

He stopped when he saw her. She was lying on the sofa with her eyes half closed, her hair loose, her face slack and pale, and she must have looked, she realised later, like a woman who had been somewhere. Like a woman who had been used.

"Amma?" he said. "Are you alright?"

She sat up quickly, too quickly, and her back twinged. "Vinay. You are early."

"Mock test got over early." He came and sat on the chair opposite, and looked at her. Really looked. "You seem... somewhere else these days. Are you alright?"

"Just work pressure," she said. "Nothing else."

He nodded. He looked at her for another moment, and then he said, "You know you can tell me, Amma. If there is something. You do not have to hide it from me anymore. Not like before."

She looked at him. At her son, who had grown up in the last few months, who had become a man with a life and a girl and a future. And for a moment she was tempted—really tempted—to tell him everything. To confess it all, to unburden herself, to let him be her confidant again. The affair was not over. It was deeper than ever. And he deserved to know.

But then she thought of the consequences—of his disappointment, of his judgment, of the questions—and she decided to keep it, for a little longer.

"Nothing to tell," she said, and smiled. "Just the usual. You focus on your studies."

He did not look convinced. But he let it go. He stood up and went to his room, and she heard him on the phone, low and soft, and she knew he was talking to Ananya.

And she lay back on the sofa and closed her eyes and thought: *he is becoming more attentive again. And that will make it harder.* Because an attentive son would notice things. He would notice the backache, the tiredness, the phone, the small slips. He would notice the pattern that had made her a different woman.

She would have to be more careful. But the truth was, she had become so good at being careful that it was almost second nature. And that, in itself, was the most frightening thing of all.

The Sunday of the first meeting, Madhu was restless from the morning.

She had told Rajesh she was going to the temple, and she had, and she had done the rounds and said the prayers, but she had left early, and by four o'clock she found herself in a small tea shop near Kilpauk, across the road from a house she had never seen but had been told about—the house of the family from Coimbatore, where the first meeting was to be held.

She had found the address from Gautham, casually, in a message. He had not asked her to come. He had not invited her. She had simply decided, that morning, that she would go and watch, and so she had, and now she was sitting in a tea shop with a glass of tea and a plate of biscuits, and she was, she realised, nervous.

She had no right to be nervous. This was a meeting between two families. It had nothing to do with her. And yet, here she was, hiding in a tea shop like a girl watching her boyfriend meet a prospective bride.

At four-fifteen, a car drew up outside the house.

She watched as Gautham's parents got out first—his mother in a silk saree, his father in a white shirt and dhoti, both of them formal and a little stiff. And then Gautham himself, stepping out of the car, and Madhu's breath caught.

He was dressed for the occasion. A light blue shirt, dark trousers, hair neatly combed, shoes polished. He looked, for once, like the boy next door—the boy a family would want for their daughter. He looked young, and decent, and normal. He looked nothing like the man who had tied her wrists to his bedposts and called her his whore.

He walked into the house with his parents, and the door closed, and he was gone.

Madhu sat in the tea shop and drank her tea and waited. She did not know what she was waiting for. She had no way of knowing what was happening inside. But she stayed, because leaving felt like abandoning something, and she wanted, absurdly, to be there when he came out.

She stayed for an hour. She drank another tea. She watched the door.

At a quarter past five, the door opened.

The family came out first—the girl's family, parents and a young woman in a pale saree, and behind them, a girl. Madhu sat up and looked. The girl was fair and slim and young, with her hair in a braid, and she was smiling shyly, and she looked exactly as he had described her. Ordinary. Decent. From a good family.

And then Gautham came out behind her, and he shook the father's hand, and he said something that made the family laugh, and he was charming, and pleasant, and young, and the girl glanced at him once, quickly, and looked away, and her cheeks were pink.

Madhu watched it all, and felt something heavy settle in her chest.

This was real. This was not a thing he had told her to comfort her or to prepare her. This was a real meeting, with a real girl, with a real family, and there would be a real wedding, and there would be a real wife. And Madhu was on the outside, in a tea shop, watching.

She watched as the girl's family got into their car and drove away. She watched as Gautham's parents stood and talked for a moment. And then she watched as Gautham, before getting into his own car, turned and looked across the road.

He had seen her.

He did not smile. He did not wave. He simply looked at her, across the road, across the distance, and then he turned and got into the car and drove away. And Madhu sat in the tea shop with her cold tea and felt the whole weight of the afternoon press down on her.

It had been a good meeting. She could tell. The family had liked him. The girl had liked him. And he, in his calm, deliberate way, had decided to let her watch, so that she would know. So that she would understand what was coming.

She went home and told Rajesh it had been a long temple visit, and she had gone to the market afterwards, and she was tired, and she was going to lie down. He did not ask more. And she lay in the dark bedroom, in her saree, and stared at the ceiling, and did not cry, and did not think, and simply felt the weight of it.

The spotting had not stopped.

It had been three weeks now, on and off, faint and irregular, and Madhu had finally run out of excuses. The backache had not stopped either. And she had begun to feel, in the mornings, a dull, dragging weight in her pelvis that she could not explain.

She had to go to a doctor. She could not put it off any longer. But going to a doctor meant questions, and questions meant answers, and answers meant the truth. And the truth was complicated.

She chose a small clinic in the neighbourhood—not the family doctor, not the one Rajesh used, but a woman doctor at a small clinic two streets away. She went on a Thursday morning, dressed in a plain saree, and she sat in the waiting room with a knot in her stomach.

The doctor was a brisk, kindly woman of about fifty, with spectacles and short grey hair, and she asked Madhu about her symptoms in a professional way—the backache, the spotting, the fatigue—and then she asked the question Madhu had been dreading.

"Are you sexually active?"

Madhu hesitated. The question, in the mouth of a doctor, should have been simple. But for her, it was not. Because the answer depended on which life you meant.

"Yes," she said.

The doctor looked at her over her spectacles. "Married?"

"Yes."

"How old are you?"

"Forty-two."

"Any change in your cycle recently? Stress? Any change in... activity?"

Madhu felt the colour rise in her face. "Yes," she said. "Some change. Stress. And... and some change in activity."

The doctor nodded, making notes. "The spotting is most likely hormonal. It can happen at your age—the perimenopause begins, and the cycle becomes irregular. The backache is probably muscular, exacerbated by posture and by... by activity. But let me examine you."
