Chapter 40 – Busy Days and Sudden Pull

A week slipped by.
Aadhini threw herself into work. Back-to-back meetings, performance appraisals, a new employee wellness program that demanded long hours. The days were full. The evenings belonged to the house: homework, dinner, Rajesh talking about his projects, the steady performance of being a present wife and mother. From the outside the routine held.
Underneath it the hunger did not fade.
At night, once the house grew quiet, her body remembered. The deep ache from the prone position had softened into a dull, sweet tenderness, but the want remained. She would lie beside Rajesh and feel the ghost of another man’s weight, the stretch, the scalding heat of him emptying inside her. Short messages with Maaran continued through the week. Nothing long. Nothing careless. Just enough to keep the current alive.
Maaran was equally occupied. Older commissions, preparation for a small exhibition, and the new anniversary request from the man named Rajesh. He worked long hours. In the quiet gaps he pulled out the drawings of Aadhini and studied them with the same focused hunger he had shown her body. The week apart had not cooled anything. It had only made the need more precise.

At home one evening after dinner, Rajesh sat at the dining table scrolling through his phone with a furrowed brow. He had promised the artist reference photos for the anniversary drawing, but nothing felt right. He had dozens of pictures of Aadhini: family trips, festivals, ordinary evenings. None of them showed what he wanted.
He wanted her curves. The soft fullness of her breasts, the generous line of her hips, the round weight of her ass and thighs. Something closer to the private way he saw her. Side poses looked stiff. Front angles looked ordinary. No single image carried the natural, womanly presence he imagined the charcoal would reveal.
Aadhini walked in from the kitchen, wiping her hands. “What are you so focused on?”
Rajesh closed a few tabs. “Looking for photos. For a surprise. Anniversary is coming.”
Her heart gave a small, complicated flutter. She kept her voice warm. “That’s sweet. Tell me if you need help.”
He rubbed his temples. “It’s harder than I thought. I want something that shows you properly. Your shape. But the photos don’t do it justice.”
Aadhini kissed the top of his head. “Take your time. Whatever you choose will be fine.”
Rajesh set the phone aside, still unsatisfied. Over the next days the search continued to frustrate him.

One fine evening, as the light softened over Kochi, Aadhini stood on the balcony with her phone. Rajesh was inside with the children. The week of messages and memory had worn her restraint thin. She dialled.
Maaran answered on the second ring.
“Aadhini.”
“Be ready,” she said. Her voice was quiet but steady. “I’ll pick you up in thirty minutes.”
There was a short silence on the other end. Then only:
“I’m ready.”

She told Rajesh she needed to meet a college friend who was in the city for one night. The lie came easily enough. She changed into a simple dark kurta and jeans, left her hair loose, and drove toward Fort Kochi with her pulse already elevated.
Maaran was waiting outside the studio lane. No bag. Just him. When he opened the car door and got in, the air inside the vehicle changed. Neither of them spoke at first. She pulled into traffic. His presence filled the small space: the familiar scent of charcoal and skin, the solid weight of his body in the passenger seat.
At a red light she felt his hand settle on her thigh, high enough to be clear, heavy enough to claim. The heat of his palm sank through the denim. She kept her eyes on the road, but her legs parted a fraction under his hand.
She did not ask where he wanted to go. She simply drove.
She took familiar roads at first, then turned toward a quieter stretch near the backwaters, a secluded area shielded by trees and overgrown foliage, far from the main traffic. The evening light had faded into deep twilight by the time she parked the car in the shadowed clearing.
For a moment the only sound was their breathing.
Aadhini turned to him. The week of distance, the residual ache, the constant low hunger, and the messages that had never been enough all gathered into one clear decision.
“Get in the back,” she said, voice low and steady.
Maaran looked at her. The intensity in his eyes was the same as always, but this time he did not lead. He moved.
Aadhini stepped out, checked the surroundings once, then opened the rear door and slid in after him. The door closed with a solid sound. The confined space of the back seat held them both. The air was already thick.
She looked at him in the near-dark, the power of the choice sitting fully in her hands now.
“Remove your pants and sneakers,” she said.
The week of restraint had broken something open in her. Tonight she would take what she needed.
