Chapter 185: Item Song shooting
# Scene 1
The studio floor hit Selvam like a wall of heat and noise.
Stone columns rose on three sides. Painted deep red. Weather-stained. Carved with Chola-era motifs he recognized from temple visits but had never expected to see reproduced at Vanmmer Productions.
Oil lamps burned in iron brackets. Forty of them. Their light warm and directional.
Silk banners hung from the ceiling. Chola red. Gold trim. The choreographer stood at center stage and shouted.
“The left bank is too bright. Fix it.” He pointed. “The banners need to drop another foot. They’re framing the king wrong.”
Selvam stepped forward.
Yazhini materialized from between two lighting stands. Her clipboard pressed to her chest. Her braid neat. Her eyes bright.
“You’re late.” No hello. “The set’s been hot for twenty minutes.”
She walked beside him. Her pace brisk.
“Historical context,” she said. “Chola conquest of Gangavadi. Modern Karnataka. The king receives tribute from the defeated court. Your character is the king. The tribute dancer offers the court.”
Selvam looked at the set. The stone columns. The banners.
“What’s happening?” he said.
“The item song, for the audio launch.” Yazhini’s pen tapped her clipboard. “The historical brief is locked. The costumes match.”
“Item song?” Selvam asked, confused.
She pointed.
Across the set, beside a painted column, Bhagyashri Borse stood in costume.
Antique gold fabric barely covered her chest. A narrow band. Low-slung crimson silk mini skirt hugged her hips and ended well above the knee. Light jewelry at her throat. At her wrists. Anklets that chimed when she shifted.
Nothing covered her midriff.
The skin ran bare from the underside of her tight blouse to the waistband of the skirt. Smooth. Warm under the lamp light.
The waist chain sat low. Gold against skin. It framed nothing. It sat directly below her navel.
The navel was open. Fully. The soft hollow Yazhini and Vanitha had watched move quietly during the audition was now the visual center of the costume. Unframed except by the chain below it.
Selvam opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Started to ask if the costume was final.
Stopped.
“Your costume is in the dressing room,” Yazhini said. “It’s a loincloth.”
He turned to her.
“Silambam practice sequence,” she continued. “King’s courtyard. Torso bare. Legs bare. Staff is already on the mark. First setup is waiting. You need to change. Now.”
Selvam looked past her.
Vanitha stood to one side. Production binder in hand. Her lips pressed together. The corners of her mouth doing something that was not a smile and was not not a smile.
She did not help him.
“You knew about this,” he said. Quiet.
“Yazhini handles the costume notes.” Vanitha’s voice carried perfectly. “The binder has the full breakdown. If you want it after you change.”
He went to the dressing room.
The loincloth was a length of unbleached cotton. Single piece. Knotted at the hip. He wrapped it. Tied it. The knot sat high.
His chest was bare. Waxed. The abs cut. The loincloth covered very little below the waist.
He looked at himself in the mirror.
The assistant director knocked and entered without waiting.
“Knot needs to sit lower.” She pointed at his left hip. “The dbang is wrong. Lower it two inches.”
He adjusted. The cotton settled against his hip bone.
The choreographer positioned him at center set. Staff in hand. Silambam opening stance. Feet wide. Shoulders square.
“Hold it.” The choreographer stepped back. “Don’t adjust the cloth. The light is set for the torso. Any movement breaks it.”
Oil lamps cast warm gold across the cut of his chest. Across the ridges of his abs. The light directional. Sculptural.
Bhagyashri crossed the set. Her anklets chimed. She stopped two feet from him.
“Selvam.” His name came out soft. As if confirming he was the same man from the meeting. “I did not expect the costume to sit that way.”
Her eyes moved over his chest. Over his abs. The attention was open. Unguarded. Her professional composure briefly absent.
“I’m glad it’s not one of those ugly-looking heroes.” She smiled. A real one. “The chest looks different under the lamps.”
Her eyes dropped.
To the loincloth. To the specific shape it was failing to fully conceal.
She held very still. One beat. Two.
Looked back at his face.
“I can see why the loincloth was chosen.” Her voice carried. “I will work with it.”
He was doing the same thing.
Looking at her navel. At the antique gold piece barely containing her chest. At the full bare plane of her midriff. The waist chain sat against warm skin.
“The costume reads clearly,” he said.
Both their mouths were slightly open.
“I can see the same thing on you,” she said.
Yazhini stood beside the monitor. She watched. Her head tilted.
“Stay exactly where you are.” Her voice cut through the set. “Don’t move. The camera is already rolling on the wide. Do not break the look.”
She called them over. Stepped in front of Bhagyashri.
“Are you comfortable being touched?” Yazhini’s voice was direct. Professional. “The choreography requires the king to handle you. Full physical authority. A man who takes what he wants in a conquered court. I need your comfort level with full-body contact. Lifting. Grips at the waist. Hips. Under the thighs on the carry.”
She paused.
“I need a clear yes before we start.”
Bhagyashri answered without hesitation. Her voice carried the matter-of-fact confidence of an actress who had been waiting.
“Do not hold back.” She looked at Yazhini. Then at Selvam. “I am a professional. This is a kingdom. The king takes what he wants. Grab me wherever the choreography requires. Do not worry about me.”
She took a breath.
“I want it to feel like he is claiming the tribute. Not like two actors carefully dancing around each other.” Her eyes were bright. “I have been waiting for a brief that lets me stop playing the safe version of myself.”
Selvam stood beside her. His expression shifted. Recalibrating.
“Are you certain,” he asked. Once.
“I am certain.” She did not look away. “Stop checking.”
Yazhini turned to him.
“Two close-up shots.” Her voice brisk. Specific. “Bhagyashri’s lips on your chest. Your abs. The reverse shot requires you to kiss around her navel. Same register. Deliberate. Unhurried. Not polite.”
She pointed.
“The navel kiss lands just below the chain. Hold for the full count.”
Selvam looked at Vanitha.
Vanitha looked at her production binder. Her shoulders were doing something. Not quite shaking.
“The notes are in the binder,” she murmured. “If you want to check. The close-up page is marked. You can look after the first blocking.”
He turned back to Yazhini.
“I will do my best,” he said. “I understand the blocking.”
“That is not the same as doing it properly.” Yazhini’s eyes held his. “Do not hold back. The energy has to match what she just offered.”
The playback track cued. The set hummed.
Bhagyashri stepped onto her mark. Her navel caught the lamp light. Open. Waiting.
Selvam adjusted his grip on the staff.
The choreographer called action.
# Scene 2
The first takes were about distance.
Selvam moved through Silambam forms. Staff in hand. Feet planted. The circle of his stance widened with each pass.
Bhagyashri circled him. Her anklets marking time. The distance between them measured in feet. Then inches.
“Find the circle before the spin.” The choreographer’s voice cut through the playback. “The king doesn’t chase. She comes to him.”
The playback track drove. Carnatic percussion. Tight. A vocalist pulled long climbing notes over the beat. The energy of it loosened his shoulders faster than he expected.
Bhagyashri matched it. Her hips found the rhythm on the second bar.
“The beat is faster than the rehearsal,” she said. Breathing. “I’ll match it.”
By the third take he was no longer thinking about the loincloth.
The choreography held him. The staff moved through forms his body remembered from training years. His hands found the grip. His feet found the floor.
Bhagyashri’s circle tightened.
“Open the stance wider.” The choreographer stepped in between takes. “Selvam, wider. Bhagyashri, let your arms finish the line. Don’t cut them short.”
She nodded. Reset.
“The circle is working,” the choreographer called. “Keep the same speed into the chorus.”
The chorus hit.
Selvam caught her mid-spin. His hands closed around her bare waist.
Warm. Solid. Her skin damp from the lamp heat. The contact was nothing like the audition room. Nothing like the careful distance of rehearsals.
She gripped his forearms. Instinctive. Strong.
“The catch is solid,” she said. Close. “The heat is making the skin slick.”
The choreographer called cut.
“That was the right energy.” His voice carried. “Do it exactly like that.”
Bhagyashri’s hands stayed on his forearms for a beat after the music stopped.
“The catch felt secure,” she said. “You can hold tighter next time. If the step needs it.”
The choreographer nodded. “Same pressure on the next pass. Selvam, keep it.”
The waist lift came in the second chorus.
“Set your hands before the rise.” The choreographer demonstrated. Palms up. Hooked. “The lift comes from the hips. Not the waist.”
Selvam hooked both hands under her hips. The loincloth shifted with the exertion. Cotton against skin. He brought her up.
Her bare midriff came level with his eyes. She extended her arms. The classical pose the choreographer had set. Her navel directly in front of his face. The antique gold waist chain swayed with the movement.
He could feel her breathing. The rise and fall of her ribs against his forearms.
“The grip under the hips is stable,” she said. Her voice steady. “I can hold the pose.”
The choreographer counted. Loud. “One. Two. Three. Hold.”
Selvam held. Her weight solid in his hands. The loincloth between them. Her skin warm against his chest.
“Bring her down slow,” the choreographer called. “Don’t rush it.”
He brought her down. Slowly. Her body slid back to standing. Her chest pressed against his. Full. The gold chest piece between them. Her breath against his collarbone.
They separated.
The choreographer counted the hold. “Beautiful. Again.”
She looked at him. Her eyes held his. One beat. Two.
“The lift is comfortable,” she told the choreographer. Her voice clear. “Selvam can keep the same grip. The contact on the way down is fine. Don’t clean it.”
The director called for the close-up sequence.
“Bhagyashri. Step in. Chest kiss. Start below the collarbone. Move downward. Deliberate. Slow.”
She stepped in. Close. Her lips pressed to his chest. Below the collarbone. The kiss was deliberate. Slow. As instructed.
She moved downward.
Her lips brushed across his left nipple. The contact was light. Unmistakable. She paused. Half a second. Then continued.
Across the right nipple. Same light brush. Unplanned. Real.
She kept going. Down over the ridges of his abs. Her mouth traced each defined line. The director counted beats aloud.
“Hold the last kiss longer.”
She held. Her lips against the lowest cut of his abs. Warm. Soft.
The director called for the reverse.
“Selvam. Lower your head. Navel kiss. Below the chain. Same register. Hold until the count ends.”
He lowered his head. Her midriff was inches from his face. The waist chain sat against warm skin. He kissed the soft hollow just below it.
His mouth traced the curve. Slow. Unhurried. The skin was warm. Slightly damp from the lamps.
He held. The count reached five. Six.
The director called cut.
The set held its silence. The playback track had stopped. The oil lamps hummed.
Bhagyashri’s hand found his shoulder. Brief. A touch that said something neither of them was going to name.
The carry sequence was next.
# Scene 3
The carry sequence was the shot.
The choreographer stood between them. His hands moved through the air. Demonstrating.
“Pull her in on the downbeat.” He clapped. Once. Sharp. “Legs hook around your waist. Classical victory-carry. King and conquered. Camera tracks the full path across the set.”
Bhagyashri nodded. Her hands found her hips. Adjusted the waist chain.
“I’ll hook on the pull,” she said. “Don’t wait for me.”
The playback cued. The downbeat hit.
Selvam pulled her in.
Her legs hooked around his waist. Tight. Her bare midriff pressed flat against his abs. The loincloth was between them. A single layer of unbleached cotton.
She felt it.
His cock beginning to respond. Through the cotton. The heat. The contact. The accumulated charge of the last hour of takes.
She said his name. Once. Under her breath.
Her eyes found his. She went very still. A fraction of a second.
The choreographer called action.
They performed the sequence. Her weight in his arms. Her legs locked around him. The camera tracked.
While they were held together she whispered.
“Sorry.” Her breath against his ear. “Is that what I think it is?”
He whispered back. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
The director called cut.
Immediate.
“Another take.” His voice carried. “The line of the carry isn’t clean. The path breaks at the third column.”
The choreographer stepped in. “Keep moving. Don’t break the line.”
She did not let go.
Her legs stayed hooked around him. Her face close to his. The take had ended. The cameras were resetting.
“I felt that.” Her voice soft. For his ears only. “I’m not complaining.”
Her breath warmed his neck.
“I’m flattered I have that effect on you.” She whispered it. Shy. Honest.
“Your beauty is the reason.” His voice low. “Not an excuse.”
She giggled. Soft against his shoulder. The sound vibrated through his chest.
“The contact is part of the shot.” Her hand pressed his shoulder. “Don’t adjust. The reaction is fine. Keep the same hold if we go again.”
The director called for another take.
Then another.
“Closer,” he said after the fifth. “But I still need the full path across the set. The tracking shot isn’t landing.”
Selvam set her down. His composure controlled. The particular stillness of a man who had been performing self-possession for an hour and was running low on reserves.
Vanitha stood beside the monitor.
She had given up pretending to look at the production binder. It lay closed on the table beside her.
“The playback is clear,” she told Yazhini. Her voice even. Professional. “The carry reads.”
She was watching Selvam’s face on the playback screen. The specific, warm, complicated attention of a woman who knew exactly what was happening to his body in that loincloth.
“The face on the monitor,” she said, “is doing more than the binder notes predicted.”
Yazhini called a break.
“Ten minutes,” she announced. “Close-ups are next.”
Selvam walked directly to Vanitha.
He did not say anything.
She looked up at him. Her lips pressed together. Her eyes bright. The corners of her mouth doing something she was not trying to hide anymore.
“Is the loincloth still holding?” she asked.
“This is entirely your fault.” His voice low. For her alone.
“I had nothing to do with it.” She held his gaze. “It was all Yazhini. I only approved the historical note.”
“Yazhini learned everything she knows from you.”
“The binder didn’t mention the loincloth would do this.”
She laughed. The real one. Open. Unfiltered.
“Go do your close-ups.” She waved him away. “Stop complaining. The navel kiss is still on the list. Don’t think about it until you’re back on the mark.”
He went back to the set.
Yazhini called after him. “First close-up is the chest kiss. Bhagyashri is already in position.”
She had caught the tail end of the exchange. Without hearing the words. She watched her husband walk back toward Bhagyashri.
Her expression shifted. The particular realization of a nineteen-year-old CEO who had just understood that the film she was making was going to be significantly more interesting to direct than she had originally planned.
Bhagyashri stood on her mark. Her navel open. The waist chain catching the lamp light.
Selvam took his position.
The director called action.
The playback cued.
The set hummed.
