“This patch of the road is a bit bumpy so hold on,” Baba said as he slowed down the car on the highway.

We were on our way to the bride’s village, where the wedding was to be held in two days. The wedding party consisted of two cars and a bus. The first car, a Toyota Innova, had me, Baba, and Aai. The second car was a Ford Endeavour with my brother-in-law Nikhil, and a couple of his friends. The bus was filled with the extended family and followed the cars.

Since it was a five-hour drive to the bride’s village, we set out early in the morning, hoping to be there for the lunch hosted by the bride’s family. Baba sat in the front seat next to the driver, whereas Aai and I sat in the back. I was behind Baba’s seat and Aai was behind the driver.

We stopped for a small break after a couple of hours. Everyone had breakfast and a bathroom break before we set out again. This time, Baba was at the wheel while the driver sat next to him. Aai had trouble travelling by road. She would get motion sick and usually tried to sleep through the drive. Right now, she was sitting to my right with her eyes closed and head leaning back on the car seat. She was fast asleep, having woken up at dawn.

“Woah… that was a big pothole,” I cried out as the car drove through a rather deep pothole.

“Sorry beta but the road is too bad. This road had been washed away during the monsoon floods. They haven’t fixed it yet,” Baba said. The road was bad, with deep potholes and bumps everywhere. The body of the car rolled and everyone inside moved like bop bags.

I was wearing a saree. Since I was the senior daughter-in-law of the family and we were going to go straight to the bride’s house with no time to change my clothes, I preferred to wear a silk saree. The rolling motion of the car made the pallu of my saree slide down and fall on my thighs, exposing my blouse-covered chest.

I picked up the pallu and flung it over my shoulder and was adjusting it when I noticed Baba’s gaze through the rear-view mirror. I looked over at Aai, who was in a deep slumber. She wasn’t feeling good anyway and the bad road only made it worse. I then glanced at the left side mirror and saw that the driver wouldn’t be able to see me since the mirror was tilted away from me, towards Baba.

I slowly pulled my pallu aside, just enough to give him a glimpse of my deep cleavage before sliding the pallu back into position. Baba looked into the rear-view mirror at me and then looked ahead to the road. Thank God the bad road made Baba drive slowly, and sparse traffic made it safer.
