Padma returned home quietly, exhausted after the long college function and the journey through the familiar village lanes.
Her mother was busy in the kitchen, while her father sat on the verandah talking to a neighbour. Nobody seemed to notice how unusually quiet she was.
Padma went into her room and closed the door.
For a moment, she stood with her back against it, listening to the ordinary sounds of the house.
Slowly, she removed her earrings, watch and bangles, placing them on the dressing table. Then she began unpinning her saree, letting the fabric fall loosely before folding it and setting it aside.
Now dressed in her bra and panty, she looked at herself in the mirror.
Her eyes stopped at the faint reddish marks on her waist and the sides of her body.
She turned slightly to get a better look.
The redness brought back memories of Rajan holding her close the previous night. She remembered the intensity of the moment, but also her repeated attempts to slow things down.
Padma gently touched the skin near one of the marks.
Padma: “Rajan… why did you have to make everything so complicated?”
She looked at her reflection again, her expression caught between embarrassment, confusion and regret.
She had never imagined that a conversation at a village function could leave her feeling so unsettled the next morning.
What would Mohan say if he knew?
Padma lowered her eyes and reached for her comfortable nightdress. She changed, covered the marks and sat quietly on the bed.
Padma picked up her towel and walked into the washroom, closing the door behind her.
She stood before the mirror for a moment, looking at her tired face. Her kajal had smudged slightly, and traces of makeup remained around her eyes and cheeks.

She turned on the tap and splashed cool water over her face.
Taking a soft towel, she gently wiped away her makeup, dabbing around her eyes before cleaning her cheeks and forehead. She tied her hair back loosely and washed her face once more.
As she patted her skin dry, she caught her reflection again.
And went to bed…
