I belong to a higher middle class family from North India. I have two sisters and a brother, and I am the eldest among them. All four of us are married.

I live with my wife, my four-year-old son, and my parents. My father runs a substantial business; we hold a distributorship for engineering products, and we manage the business together. The business generates a good income, which is sufficient for us.

My younger brother lives abroad with his family.

This happened in December 2009, when North India was in the grip of a biting cold wave.

Business was a bit slow during those winter months. Around that time, my mother expressed a desire to visit tourist places in South India.

She wanted to visit the beaches and beautiful places on January 15th, a festival day. Since my father was unwell, he asked me to accompany her.

I wasn't keen on going, so I kept making excuses.

I am a family-oriented person and didn't feel like traveling away from my family. 

However, my mother insisted on going, so I was compelled to agree. We then decided that the two of us—mother and son—would make the trip once the weather improved.

Seeing my reluctance, my wife kept teasing me, saying I wasn't fulfilling my duty as a son and that I ought to take my mother for the tour she so desired.
