He was not walking straight...he has a limp in his right leg.
He was also holding his left shoulder with his right arm.
When the lights cam e on..I could clearly see he had a black eye. Blood was dripping from his nose.
His shirt was torn in many places.
Sheena asked him to sit on the couch and he did.
He looked like he is in a lot of pain.
“Did he get himself into a road accident?” is the only thing that came to my mind.
He sat on the couch with his head low.
Sheena walked into the bedroom...took a shower, changed into a comfortable night dress and came back.
She walked directly into the kitchen and walked out with a bottle of scotch.
“Does it hurt?” She asked him walking up to him and extended her arm towards him signalling him to take the scotch.
Suri looked at her surprised.
“For the pain.” She said.
He took it and slowly took a sip and made a weird face….it doesn’t look like he is used to drinking.
Sheena walked back and sat on the other couch facing him.
She waited for Suri to take a couple of more sips and then raising hr voice, asked, “Who was he? What the hell was going on? What did you do?”
This startled Suri.
He immediately put the bottle on the floor, stood up and ran towards her and collapsed at her feet, crying.
He held her right leg and said in a shaking voice between sobs, “Thanks you memsaab...thank you for what you have done for me.”
“What has she DONE for you?” I was nervous and completely lost.
The expression on Sheena’s face did not change.
She let Suri cry..and get it out of his system.
Then she tapped on his head and he looked up with an innocent face.
She signaled him with her head to get the bottle.
He did.
“Keep drinking Suri,” In a very soothing but authoritative voice, “For the pain.”
He sat at her feet and was sipping scotch.
“Tell me Suri, tell me everything….I need to know.” She ordered.
Suri looked up and seeing the look on her face started talking...still sobbing, “His name is Naarang. He is the son of the Panchayat president of my home town..xxxxxxx.”
He paused and took another gulp.
“That family is the richest in my village….they own a lot of property there and have lot of businesses.”
“President ji is a true gentleman. He has a good heart. He had helped a lot of us in the past..when the crops failed...when some one got sick...he was always there for us.”
“He never expected the money he gave us back...only if we can return did he take it.”
Suri was staring out the window and continued.
“President ji is very old now..but still is the president. He has a girl and a boy..Naarang.”
Naarang’s sister used to help her father out when ever she could and she never let Naarang handle things. She also was a good person.”
“But recently she was married off to another town.”
“As he was getting old, president ji had to let Naarang take over the family business.”
“Naarang is the incarnation of evil. He started exploiting people who had taken loans from his father….high interest rates...to the loans taken decades ago...the interest has become larger than the loan itself in many cases.”
“People lost their homes to him...properties to him...live stock...everything.”
“His hunger for money and power is insatiable.”
“I too am another victim. I don’t even know who took the loan from his dad...my dad or my mom…as they both are no more.”
“He started threatening me...to repay him….10 lakhs he says.”
“If I had 10 lakhs, why would I become a servant?”
“I heard he had taken over my hut...the small land around it...and drove the farmer who was taking care of it away.”
“I did not let my whereabouts in the city to anyone….that is what I thought.”
“This afternoon, one of his men saw me at the market and called him.”
“That is what you saw memsaab….his goons bashing me black and blue.”
“What in the name of….” I didn’t know what to think….but I knew I was panicking.
“But how did Sheena manage to get him out of it...from those goons...a single lady?” I wondered.
“If not for you memsaab..they would have killed me today…..” he was still sobbing.
“What the hell is she thinking...interfering in stuff like this?” I was shit scared.
“hmmm” Sheena said...lost in her thoughts….
Some thing about her demeanor….she was having a very blank expression on her face since she walked in the door that evening….no expression at all..almost like the one some one would have when they are very confident of something.
Very authoritative...yet extremely graceful.
“Why did you tell him you would pay him the money I owe him?” Suri asked.
“She did WHAAAT?” I was furious and scared at the same time.
Sheena did not respond to his question as if it wasn’t even hers to answer.
She was still lost in her thoughts...with the same graceful expression.
“Memsaab..memsaab..” Suri had to shake her leg a couple of times to get her attention.
‘Hmmm?” She came back to earth.
“Why did you tell him you would pay him the money I owe him?” Suri asked again, in a low timid voice this time.
“How else was I supposed to save you?” She showed an expression on her face after a long time...irritation, “You were a goner.”
“I did the first thing that came to my mind...to save you.” She said.
“I love you.” I said that out loud….she genuinely tried to help Suri...by putting herself in harms way of course.
“Such a good soul.” I couldn’t help thinking.
“But..but memsaab...you don’t know about Naarang...he is very very bad person…..evil person…” Suri was concerned..
“You even told him to come collect the money himself...tomorrow….that too directly from you and even gave him your address?”
“Why did you give him your address? I could have left the city and disappeared.” Suri said.
“You don’t understand Suri”, her voice was very calm, “I could see that they were hellbent on killing you...I could clearly see in their eyes...that they would not walk away from there without taking something...or a promise of a payment at a later time...from someone whom they believe will pay….They were there to make money out of your dead body Suri….selling eyes..kidneys…”
“whoa”, I thought...”Who is this woman and what has she done to my wife?”
“I don’t know this side of my wife….whom I’ve been married to, for 8 years.”
Suri almost fainted hearing this.
“I had to do what I had to do, Suri.” She said, “Else he would not have let you go alive.”
“Thank you memsaab” Suri’s voice was shaking….so was mine.
Sheena was staring at the wall..there wasn’t anything on the wall to stare at.
After almost 10 minutes, Sheena asked Suri, “Tell me more about Naarang.”
“Why the fuck do you want to know more about that devil?” I almost yelled.
“He is a very bad person..he exploits..” Suri stared when Sheena rudely interrupted him.
“You have already told me all that….not helping...are there any other details..anything you haven’t told me yet...anything you might have heard about him from others?” she asked.
This started to get interesting for me now.
Suri looked all confused at first but slowly recovered and started talking after thinking for a bit.
“We all are scared of Naarang….he is a bad..oh, sorry I already told you that..” he said
That was the kind of mental dominance my wife has on him now.
“What are HIS like..dislikes...anything you know” Sheena said.
“Well...all villagers joke about one thing about him…” Suri said as if he just remembered something.
“What?” were Sheena’s words.
“The entire village is afraid of Naarnag and Naarang is afraid of his dad.” Suri ended up saying.
“No one knows for sure..as to why.”
“Some people say...president ji used to hit him a lot during his child hood and that fear is still there.”
Sheena hearing this shook her head...as if she doesn’t think that could have been the reason Naarang is afraid of his dad.
“What else have you heard?” She asked.
“Well.. there is this one other thing...never mind..it is probabaly nothing..” Suri said.
Sheena raised her voice to a level that made Suri almost shit his pants.
“DO YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE? THEY WILL KILL YOU IF I DON’T PAY THEM TOMORROW.”
“S..S..sorry memsaab” Suri apologized.
I felt sorry for Suri for some reason.
“The village drunk...Kushaal kaka...used to tell everyone before he passed away 10 years ago that president ji had a secret affair with another woman….some one not of his status….and even had a child with her…..no one believes him of course….”
“Kaka used to tell everyone that Naarang is a tiger in front of everyone but a pussy cat in front of his dad, because he knows that if his dad is pissed off at him, his dad will make sure he would not get a penny….and that all of the property president ji has will go to that OTHER child...no one knows even exists.”
“President ji is a very good man...always helping people...Naarang put up a show in front of him as if he is also following him in his father’s tracks to help people, but ….”
“Naarnag makes sure president ji does not find out about the things he does….the illegal businesses he has started...the entire village knows but his goons make sure no one speaks up.”
Suri paused and looked at up at Sheena.
“Any thing else?” Sheena asked...again very nonchalantly.
“Hmmm..” Suri had to think...”Naarang has three weakness...power...gambling...women...he likes to take other peoples’ wives as collateral...to give them more time to repay his ridiculous debts.”
There was a subtle smile on her face….almost evil….as if a plan has formulated in her mind.
“I don’t know who this woman is anymore...holy shit.” Now I was shit scared of Sheena.
“Do you have any money on you?” Sheena asked Suri.
“N..no Memsaab.” He replied.
Sheena dug into her purse and pulled out a wad of cash...and threw it at him.
He picked it up and with a confused look...looked at Sheena….as he did not know what she wants him to do next.
Sheena was staring at the wall...away from him...her gaze was very focused at a pea sized dot on the wall..there is nothing there..though….but she was laser focused….at something.
“Like I figured before...I don’t know this woman anymore.” I consoled myself.
With a very stern voice...almost as if giving instructions to a spy...as to what to do next to bring the enemy down….
”Leave the city Suri…..do not go back to your village…..go to some town you have never been to...far away from here and your village….where no one knows you...or even speak the same language…..Do not check into a motel ….. sleep at the bus stand or the railway station…” she paused and said, as if hissing...like a snake..this time looking at him...
“Do not.. I repeat...do not...under no circumstances...come back to the city….until I call you...do not answer any other call.”
Suri nodded.
Sheena stood up and walked into her bedroom and locked behind her.
Suri got up and walked out the door.
The next day was again busy for me at work and I did not get a chance to check on the proceedings.
I told the folks at work that I have a headache and need to rest...left work at 3pm.
I got ot my place in Bangalore..the place my company rented for me and logged in.
Around 4pm, Sheena came home.
She looked restless.
After taking a shower, she changed into a chiffon saree….her curves were very obvious..it was a saree some one gifted her one some occasion and was my favorite, as it as a head turner.
At around 5:30pm, the door bell rang.
Sheena checked herself in the mirror and ran to answer the door.
A tall, dark...well built man was at the door..
He had a very serious expression on his face.
“Naarang,” I presumed.
“H..h,hi Narang ji...please.please..come on in.” Sheena sounded very nervous.
It was making me nervous...as I know I cannot do anything from Bangalore if anything were to happen to my wife.
He walked in.
“Please have a seat” She pointed at the couch.
Sheena walked into the kitchen and returned with a trey..some snacks and tea…
Again...as she bent to place the trey on the table, her pallu dropped.
She adjusted it immediately...trying to not make it awkward.
Naarnag seemed to have noticed it but maintained his serious look.
“Please have some tea.” Sheena tried to be polite.
“Thanks...but I am not here for tea...where is my money? Where is Suri? That son of a bitch.” His voice was coarse...sent chills down my spine.
I did not know how Sheena is keeping up with this with out breaking down.
“Strong woman.” I thought.
Sheena hesitated for a bit and said, “The money is on the way… all 10 lakhs.”
“On the way?” Naarang asked.
“Please you need to understand...no one keeps that kind of money lying around, Naarang ji.” she said, “You yourself handle a lot of cash but it would be invested in other things.”
“Hmm” Naarang said as if he sees the reason in her statement.
“When can I have it?” He asked….again in a rough voice.
“The ladies in the community help each other out...whenever there is need of money..I have loaned money to quite a few of them.” she paused.
Naarnag started having tea.
Relieved, Sheena continued, “I have sent a message that I need money as soon as possible and once it is collected, I will be intimated and all I have to do is go get it for you.”
“How long?” He roared again.
“A few hours, Naarang ji” Sheena sounded very scared.
“Hours?” Naarang almost got up.
Sheena immediately ran to him and sat next to him.
Their thighs were touching.
She took his hand into hers and said, “Please Narang ji. I will pay you tonight..please give me some time to get it.”
Seeing a beauty that close, anyone would say yes. Naarang was no different.
He reluctantly said, “Well...ok...when should I come back?”
“N..no..no..you don’t have to trouble yourself Naarang ji….the least I could do is take care of you while you wait….for your own money.” Sheena said.
Naarang looked at her for a bit and said, “OK.”
“Please freshen up if you would like..” pointing at the bedroom...instead of the guest bathroom.
Naarang stood up and walked into the bedroom to use the master bathroom.
Sheena just sat there while Naarang used the bathroom.
He came back to the hall.
Sheena was standing next to the dining table.
“Well?” he asked.
“Would you like to watch any movies Naarang ji? She asked.
“No” he said.
“I just got a call from my friend that 7 lakhs were already collected...they are working on collecting the rest….so some more time?” Sheena asked.
Hearing this, Naarang seemed to relax a bit.
He sat on the couch and said, “Where is your husband?”
“Good question” I said out loud.
“He is away on work.” Sheena responded.
“Does he know that I am here?” was his next question.
“Does he?” I asked myself.
“N..No..NO Naarang ji..” Sheena said, “none of the husbands know about this scheme the ladies run...they wouldn’t like it..as they think we waste money.” Sheena gave out an uneasy chuckle saying this.
Naarang did not respond to this.
He slowly started to have the snacks.
Sheena stood at the dining table and there was awkward silence.
After a few minutes Naarang asked, “Why are you paying Suri’s debt?”
“What would she say now?” I wondered.
Very nonchalantly Sheena replied, “I have my reasons..Naarang ji.”
Any one who heard that would suspect that there is something going on between them.
“Is your husband away a lot?” was his next question.
“I would have asked the same question.” I thought.
“He is always away.” She replied….confirming the suspicion...so at this point Naarang would be rest assured that he would get his money back and that there is no other plan to cheat him.
I noticed that there is a deck of cards in Sheena’s hand...I haven’t noticed that before.
She dropped a card ...made it seem like an accident and it landed at Naarang’s feet.
He bent forward and picked it up and handed it over to Sheena.
Taking it from him, she said, “hmmm Ace of spades...you seem to be a lucky hand Naarang ji...do you like card games?”
“Who doesn’t?” He replied.
“My husband doesn’t.” Sheena said.
“I love all the games….that is the only thing that gets be occupied besides..” she stopped as if she said something she was not supposed to.
Naarang latched on to it and asked, “Besides..what?”
Sheena smiled and said, “Let it go Naarang ji...it is not important.” she paused.
“I feel bad keeping you waiting and wasting all your time...if there is a something you would like to do to kill some time…” she said shuffling cards.
Naarnag looked at her and said...”I don;t mind a card game.”
“Nice..” Sheena was all smiles.
“Which one?” She asked.
“Any one...but I don’t play without betting.” he responded.
He was smiling a bit now.
“Rummy?” he suggested himself.
“Hmmm” Sheena made a weird face and said, “That takes a lot of time..I don’ think e have a lot of time, as the money will be here soon.” reassuring him that the money is on the way.
“Ok..then what do you suggest?” He asked...sounding all interest now...his coarse voice also had softened.
“You are good.” I complimented my wife.
“Poker?” Sheena suggested.
“Why not?” Naarnag was interested.
“I am really good at it..Naarnag ji...think it over again.” Sheena stoked his ego.
“Fuck she is good.” I thought.
“You don’t have to worry about it..” he said taking a large cash bag out if his coat pocket and placed it on the table.
Sheena looked at it with a puzzled look.
“I told you...no money to bet ...no games.” Naarang said.
Sheena smiled and said, “Of course.” and walked into the bedroom.
She came back with a wad of cash.
The game began……
Sheena sat on the couch in front of Naarang and started shuffling the cards...she was all smiles and looked at Naarnag.
He looked at her and gave out a smile.
Sheena dealt the cards and picked her two cards.
Naarnag said, “1 thousand.”
Sheena looked at him and at the table…
Naarnag realized his mistake and took out a thousand rupees from his cash bag and placed it on the table.
“I call” Sheena place a thousand on the table.
The community cards were dealt.
Naarang said, “10 thousands.”
Sheena made a weird face and said, “Fold” placing her cards face down on the table.
Naarang laughed and took all the money.
She handed over the deck to him..and he shuffled them before dealing.
This time, Sheena’s bet was 5 thousands.
Naarang called her with his 5 thousands.
Sheena showed her three of a kind while Naarang had two pairs...Sheena won.
She immediately bent forward and showing her cleavage picked up the money and started shuffling the cards.
Naarnag was enjoying the game and the VIEW.
He was also holding his left shoulder with his right arm.
When the lights cam e on..I could clearly see he had a black eye. Blood was dripping from his nose.
His shirt was torn in many places.
