Chapter 178: Rangam's Navel under a waist chain

# Scene 1

Lakshmi Jewelers smelled of gold polish and sandalwood incense. Brass nameplate. Green facade. Glass cases lined three walls, lit from beneath so the gold caught the light before the eye found it.

Vanitha stepped inside. Yazhini’s half-saree clung to her hips. The blouse hooks strained across her back. She had not changed. She had nothing to change into.

Moorthy entered behind her. His chest puffed. The mustache lifted. A man arriving at a venue he considered partly his by ancestral right.

“Three generations,” he said. To no one in particular. To everyone within earshot. “My father’s thali came from this very counter.”

The attendant recognized him. An old man with spectacles and a cloth measuring tape around his neck. He bowed slightly. “Moorthy saar. Welcome, welcome.”

“Vanitha kanna.” Moorthy gestured toward the glass. “The waist chains are here. Antique designs. Family collection.”

Vanitha approached the counter. The glass surface was cool under her palms. Behind it, gold chains lay on black velvet. Delicate. Intricate. Some as thin as thread.

“This one.” She pointed. A simple chain. Gold links. No pendants. Clean.

The attendant lifted it with tweezers. Set it on the glass between them.

Vanitha took it. The metal was warm. She held it against her waist where the half-saree sat low, the skin bare above the skirt.

Moorthy leaned close. His breath smelled of paan.

“Lower,” he said. His finger traced an imaginary line on the glass. “The chain should sit at the hip. Not above. The traditional dbang.”

Vanitha adjusted. The gold settled against her skin. Cool. Then warm.

“Turn,” Moorthy said. “Let me see the back.”

She turned. Slow. The half-saree shifted with the motion. She caught it. Adjusted. The mirror behind the counter caught her reflection. Gold against skin. The chain sitting where her waist chain should be, where it had been for years before the suitcase vanished.

“It suits you,” Moorthy said. His voice had gone soft. Proprietary. “The gold against your skin. Very traditional. Very elegant.”

Vanitha met his eyes in the mirror. Held the gaze a beat too long. Then smiled. The Miss Chennai smile. Warm. Controlled.

“Thank you, Uncle.” She turned back to the counter. “I’ll take it.”

“Wrap it,” Moorthy told the attendant. “With care. The good paper.”

The attendant nodded. Reached for tissue.

Vanitha’s eyes moved past the main counter. Toward the far end of the showroom. Temple jewelry. Heavier pieces. Jhumkas the size of walnuts. Necklaces that would sit like armor across a collarbone.

“I’d like to see the temple section,” she said.

“Of course.” Moorthy’s chest puffed again. He led. She followed.

The temple section was quieter. The cases here held fewer pieces. Each one substantial. Gold thicker. Designs older. The lighting was softer. More reverent.

Moorthy stopped at a case of jhumkas. Heavy. Intricate. Gold filigree worked into patterns so fine they seemed to breathe.

“These.” He pointed. “Navaratna stones. Each one set by hand. The craftsmanship... ” He stopped. His mustache quivered with genuine appreciation. “My grandmother wore a pair exactly like these at her wedding. 1942.”

The attendant unlocked the case. Lifted the jhumkas with tweezers. Set them on a velvet pad.

Vanitha leaned forward. Pretended to study the filigree. Her fingers hovered near the gold without touching.

“The work is exceptional,” she said. The words came out polished. Automatic. The particular fluency of a woman who had been complimenting craftsmanship since she won her first crown.

“The filigree.” Moorthy’s finger traced the air above the jewelry. “Each link hand-forged. No machine could do this. The patience it requires.”

“Mm.” Vanitha nodded. Her eyes moved from the jhumkas to Moorthy’s face. He was looking at the gold. Actually looking at it. His small eyes focused. The mustache still. For once, he was seeing the thing and not the woman beside it.

She let him have this. The genuine moment. The uncomplicated appreciation of something beautiful that asked nothing of him.

“Your daughter would look magnificent in these,” the attendant said. To Moorthy. Assuming.

Moorthy’s mustache twitched. His eyes darted to Vanitha. Then away. “She is my friend’s daughter-in-law.”

Vanitha smiled. Said nothing.

From the corner of her eye, she caught movement near the front of the shop. Selvam. Standing at the foot of a narrow staircase. His hand on the banister. Looking up.

She held the jhumka to her ear. Turned her head. The gold caught the light. Heavy. Cold against her skin.

“They’re beautiful,” she said. And meant it, despite everything. “Just not what I came for.”

Moorthy nodded. Satisfied. His mustache lifted at both ends. The outing was proceeding according to his vision. Vanitha adorned. Himself the guide. All the geometries of the morning holding.

Vanitha set the jhumka down. Turned from the case.

Selvam was gone from the foot of the stairs. The space where he had stood was empty. Just brass railing. Polished wood. Sandalwood incense curling toward the ceiling.

She did not look for him. She knew where he had gone. Upstairs. Following someone else’s voice. Someone else’s chain.

The waist chain she had chosen lay on the glass counter behind her. Gold links. Simple. Waiting.

She would wear it tomorrow. Against skin that remembered other hands. Other gold.

For now, she let Moorthy lead her to the next case. His mustache quivering with the pleasure of a man who believed, entirely, that he was the center of the story.

# Scene 2

The fitting room upstairs was small. Single mirror. Velvet curtain drawn across the doorway. Rangam stood with her sari hitched at the hip, the heavier waist chain dangling from her fingers, its clasp refusing to catch.

The attendant had recommended it. “For the traditional dbang, madam. The weight sits better.” An elderly woman with sharp eyes and soft hands. She had measured Rangam’s waist with a cloth tape, nodded once, and disappeared into the back room.

Now Rangam stood alone. The chain was heavier than she expected. Gold links thick as her smallest finger. Pendants the size of almonds hung at intervals. She held it against her waist. The metal was cold. Then warm.

Downstairs, the shop hummed. Glass cases opening and closing. Moorthy’s voice carrying from the temple section. Vanitha’s laugh, bright and measured.

Rangam hooked her thumb into the waistband of her petticoat. Pulled it lower. The chain settled against bare skin. Better. The weight distributed. She reached behind her back. Fingers fumbling for the clasp.

It would not catch.

She tried again. The small hook slipped against the eye. Missed. She exhaled. Loud in the small room.

Outside the curtain, footsteps on the stairs. Heavy. Measured. A man’s weight on the wooden treads.

The curtain parted.

Selvam stood in the doorway. His hand on the velvet. His expression caught between apology and something else. Something he had not planned to bring upstairs.

Rangam turned. The chain swung against her hip. Her sari was hitched, the pallu dbangd over one shoulder, the blouse visible beneath. Her collarbones caught the light from the single bulb overhead.

They looked at each other.

The small room held its breath.

“Your wife is having trouble with the clasp,” the attendant had called from the foot of the stairs. Her voice carrying through the empty corridor. “Go up and help her, saar. These new hooks are stiff.”

Selvam had opened his mouth. Closed it. The word wife hung between the brass railings and the sandalwood smoke.

He had climbed the stairs.

The attendant had mistaken Rangam for Selvam's wife.

Now he stood in the doorway. Rangam’s eyes on his face. The chain in her hand.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

The words came out lower than he intended. Rough at the edges. Slipped past whatever careful distance he had built between this moment and the kitchen counter where he had almost taken her three nights ago.

Rangam did not dismiss it. She did not laugh. She did not reach for the pallu to cover herself. She held his gaze. Steady. Composed in the way that cost her something.

“The attendant thought you were my husband,” she said. Not a question. A statement of fact laid between them like the chain between her fingers.

He nodded. Once. “She told me to help my wife with the clasp.”

Silence followed. Heavy. Deliberate. The kind of silence that had weight and intention.

Selvam stepped into the room. The curtain fell closed behind him. The small space grew smaller.

He stood close enough that she could smell him. Sandalwood. The particular clean scent of a man who showered twice a day and used the same soap for twenty years.

“Wear it low,” he said. His eyes on the line of her hip. On the bare skin above the petticoat where the chain should sit. “On the waist, not above. Let it sit where it was meant to.”

Rangam looked down at the chain in her hands. The gold caught the light. Heavy. Old. The kind of piece that outlived the women who wore it.

She looked back at him. “You have been watching me more carefully than I realized, Selvam.”

No accusation. Just observation. Clean. Direct. The voice of a woman who had noticed being noticed and had decided, at some point she would not name, to let it happen.

Something in her tone made him understand. She had known. Longer than this afternoon. Longer than the kitchen counter. The knowledge sat in her eyes with the settled weight of something that had stopped surprising her.

The clasp was stiff. Rangam held out the chain. Turned her back to him.

Her blouse stopped at the waist. The small of her back was bare. Smooth. The skin there paler than the rest of her, untouched by sun. Selvam took the chain. His fingers brushed hers. Once. Brief.

He found the clasp. The hook slid against the eye. Missed. He tried again. Steadier. The hook caught. The chain closed around her waist. Gold against skin. The pendants settling just above her navel.

His hands did not leave her waist. They rested there. Warm through the thin cotton of her blouse. One breath. Two.

He turned her gently. His hands at her hips. The chain between his palms and her skin.

Rangam faced the mirror. Selvam stood behind her. His reflection met hers in the glass. His hands still at her waist. The chain crossing her midriff, the pendants resting above the hollow of her navel.

He looked at her in the mirror. Question in his eyes. Permission asked without words.

She held his gaze. Said nothing. Which was its own answer.

He bent. His mouth found the skin above her navel. Where the chain framed the hollow. His lips were warm. Deliberate. Neither rushed nor hesitant. A kiss placed with the care of a man who had thought about where to put it.

Rangam did not pull away. She stood very still. Her hand came to his shoulder. Fingers pressed into the cotton of his shirt. Not pushing. Holding.

In the mirror, she watched herself receive it. Her own face. The expression there was unfamiliar. Something between surprise and the specific, exhausted relief of a woman who had been holding a door shut for years and had finally, without planning to, let someone through.

His mouth stayed against her skin. Warm. Present. The chain cool between his lips and her navel.

Outside the curtain, the attendant’s footsteps paused. She had heard the silence that followed. The particular quality of a room where two people had stopped speaking because words were no longer the point.

She smiled to herself. An old woman who had spent forty years fitting jewelry onto women and recognizing the sound of a door opening.

# Scene 3

New saree, a new petticoat, bra, and blouse came over the curtain rod without warning. Blue silk. Blouse. Petticoat. The fabric landed across Selvam’s arm with a soft rustle.

“Your wife should try this, saar.” The attendant’s voice, light and deliberate from the other side of the velvet. “The blue silk. It will suit her.”

Rangam’s hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes widened. The chain at her waist swung with the motion.

Selvam caught the bundle. Held it. Did not correct her. The word wife sat between them in the small room, heavy as the gold at Rangam’s hip.

He turned to her. Held out the saree. Blue silk caught the single bulb’s light. Rich. Deep.

“Take your saree off,” he said.

His voice was steady. His hands were not. The fabric trembled slightly between his fingers.

Rangam stared at him. For a long moment, she did not move. Her hand stayed at her mouth. Her eyes on his face. Reading something there she had not expected to find.

Then, slowly, her hand dropped. She reached for her pallu.

The saree unwound from her body one fold at a time. Silk whispering against silk. The pallu came free first. Then the pleats. She worked the fabric loose from her waist with fingers that fumbled. The saree pooled at her feet. A puddle of cream and gold border.

She reached behind her back. Found the blouse hooks. One. Two. Three. Each one gave with a small metallic sound. The blouse loosened across her shoulders. She pulled it free. Dropped it on the saree.

Her bra was pale yellow. Cotton. Practical. She reached for the clasp. The hooks gave. The bra fell forward. She let it drop.

The petticoat was last. She hooked her thumbs into the waistband. Pulled. The cotton slid down her thighs. Over her knees. To the floor. She stepped out of it. Kicked it aside.

She stood before him in the mirror’s light. Naked except for the waist chain at her hip. The gold against her skin. The pendants resting above her navel where his mouth had been.

Selvam looked at her. Really looked. The long neck. The collarbones. The breasts fuller than he had allowed himself to imagine. The narrow waist. The neat hips. The legs that carried her height the way a saree had to travel.

He touched her shoulder. Once. Deliberate. The way he had touched everything that mattered.

Outside, the curtain shifted. The attendant’s shadow moved across the velvet. She had noticed Rangam’s saree now hanging over the curtain wall, along with the saree, she gave them. 2 sarees, 2 bras, 2 petticoats and 2 blouses. The attendant smiled.

Then the attendant went back and brought a men's robe and threw it over the curtain.

Something soft hit Selvam’s chest. He caught it. A pair of men’s briefs. Cotton. Navy.

“Your husband should try this too, madam.” The attendant’s voice, playful now. Certain. “The fit is good. Very comfortable.”

Selvam held the briefs. Looked down at them. Then at Rangam.

Her eyes met his in the mirror. Neither of them spoke. The air in the small room had changed. Heavier. Charged. The kind of air that made breathing an effort.

Rangam looked down at herself. Bare. The waist chain the only thing between her skin and the room. She crossed her arms over her breasts. A gesture that seemed to surprise her as much as it surprised him. Shyness arriving late, after everything else had been shed.

“See,” she said. Her voice barely above a whisper. “I am naked.”

She covered herself more tightly. Her cheeks flushed. The color climbed from her collarbone to her jaw. She looked at the briefs in his hand.

“Try them on,” she said.

Selvam shook his head. Set the briefs on the narrow bench beside the mirror.

“I am going to undress,” he said. His voice steady now. Certain in a way that had nothing to do with planning. “But I am not going to try these on.”

He unbuttoned his shirt. One button at a time. Slow. The fabric parted. He shrugged it off his shoulders. Folded it. Set it on the bench beside the briefs. Absurd. The care he took with the folding. In this room. With this woman. Naked except for gold.

His trousers next. Belt buckle. Zipper. Fabric. Cool air touched his legs. He stepped out of the trousers. Folded them. Set them on the shirt.

His underwear last. Cotton briefs. He hooked his thumbs into the waistband. Pulled down. Stepped free.

His cock sprang forward. Hard. Upright. Thick and veined and unmistakably ready.

Rangam gasped. Audible. Her hand loosened at her breast. Her eyes dropped. Fixed. Her lips parted. The shyness forgotten in the shock of seeing him. Really seeing him.

“Everything okay, ma’am?” The attendant’s voice, close to the curtain now.

Rangam startled. Her hand flew back to cover herself. Selvam answered for her. His voice rough but controlled.

“Everything is fine.”

Silence followed. The kind that had weight. The two of them naked in the small room. The mirror reflecting double. His cock hard between them. Her arms crossed over her breasts. The waist chain catching light with each shallow breath.

Selvam reached for his discarded briefs. Threw them over the curtain wall. They landed beside the ones the attendant had thrown. Two pairs of briefs. Side by side on the velvet.

Rangam’s bra lay on the curtain wall. Warm from her body. Her blouse. Her petticoat. Her saree. All of it visible from the other side of the curtain. An inventory. A confession.

Selvam’s shirt. His trousers. Folded on the bench like a man who could not stop being careful even now.

Rangam lowered herself onto the narrow fitting bench. The wood was cool against her bare ass. She spread her legs. Slowly. The movement cost her something. Courage arriving in increments.

His cock waited at her entrance. Warm. Hard. The head pressed against her folds. Wet. She was wet. He could feel it. The slick heat of her despite everything. Despite the years. Despite Moorthy’s absence in a bed down the hall.

The last time they had been like this, pressed against a kitchen counter, Yazhini’s voice had shattered them. Had pulled them apart with the force of a daughter’s need.

Now there was no Yazhini. No kitchen. No counter creaking under their weight. Just this small room. This velvet curtain. This narrow bench that was not designed for what they were about to do.

Selvam pressed forward. Gentle. The head of his cock tried to open her wet tight pussy. She was tight. So tight it surprised them both. Her walls gripped him. Wet but resisting. Years of being closed. Untouched. Since Moorthy lost interest. Since her body became a function rather than a fact.

He grabbed her face. His thumb found her cheek. Caressed it. The gesture tender in a way that contradicted everything his body wanted to do.

“Are you sure,” he said. Low. Against her ear.

“Yes.” Her voice was steady. Certain. “Make it quick. Moorthy may come upstairs.”

Outside, the attendant had settled onto a low stool near the curtain. She could see the inventory now. Two sarees. One Rangam’s cream, one the blue silk she had thrown. Two petticoats. Two blouses. Two bras. One still warm from a body that had not been touched in years.

The curtain shifted. A soft sound escaped. Not quite a gasp. Not quite a sigh. The sound of a woman opening after being closed for too long.

The attendant did not look away. She smiled to herself. A small, private smile. The smile of a woman who had spent forty years fitting jewelry and recognizing the particular music of a body finding its voice.

She did not call out again.

Inside, Selvam entered her slowly. Inch by inch. His cock stretching her open. The wet heat of her gripping him. Tight. So tight he had to breathe through it. Had to go slow when every cell in his body wanted to drive forward.

Rangam arched against the mirror. Her hand at his shoulder. Her eyes closed. The waist chain caught the light as her hip rose to meet him. Gold flashing against skin. The pendants swinging with each shallow thrust.

He was fully inside her now. Buried to the hilt. Her walls clamped around him. Pulse after pulse. Her body remembering something it had forgotten how to ask for.

Selvam started to move. Faster now. His hips found a rhythm. Steady. Deep. Each thrust drove to the root. His hands gripped her waist. Thumbs pressing into the soft flesh above her hipbones. The chain between his palms and her skin.

The wet sound filled the small room. Skin against skin. His cock sliding in and out of her with a slick, obscene pull that the mirror caught and the curtain did nothing to muffle.

Outside, the attendant heard it. The pace. The specific wet rhythm of a man who fucked hard by default and a woman who was taking every inch of it.

She stood. Came close to the curtain. Her voice dropped to a murmur meant for the gap between velvet and wood.

“Sir, please take your time.” Gentle. Knowing. “I will make sure your friend and his daughter are not coming upstairs.”

Rangam’s eyes flew open. She stared at the curtain. Then at Selvam. Horror and gratitude warring in her face.

“Oh my god,” she whispered. “She knows.”

She buried her face in his chest. Her arms wrapped around his back. Her breasts pressed against him. The chain dug into both their skins. She held him like she was afraid the room might dissolve around them.

Selvam held her. One arm around her back. His hand flat between her shoulder blades. He felt her breathing against his chest. Fast. Shallow. The particular rhythm of a woman coming undone.

With the peace of mind the attendant had given him... Moorthy would not appear, Vanitha would not climb these stairs... Selvam began to enjoy fucking her. Really enjoy it. His hips found a deeper pace. Each thrust drove her back against the mirror. The glass rattled faintly in its frame.

Rangam’s hand clawed at his shoulder. Her nails dug crescents into his skin. She was close. He could feel it. The way her pussy clenched around him. Rhythmic. Building.

“Selvam,” she breathed. His name. His name. The way Vanitha said it. The way Yazhini did. His name in her mouth sounded like something she had been holding behind her teeth for years.

He drove into her. Hard. The bench creaked. The mirror rattled. The waist chain swung against her hip with each thrust, gold flashing, catching the single bulb’s light and throwing it back against the walls of the small room where an old woman sat on a low stool and smiled at the sound of a door that had finally, completely, come off its hinges.

He came deep inside Rangam.

He stayed still inside her a moment longer, his breathing slowing against her hair. Rangam’s arms loosened around his back.

“We should dress,” she whispered. “Before she has to lie again for us.”

He eased out of her. She made a small sound, half relief, half loss. He reached for his briefs on the curtain rod first, pulled them on, then his trousers, his shirt, each button fastened with hands steadier now than they’d been an hour ago.

Rangam gathered her things from the rail. The cream saree. The yellow bra. She dressed quickly, fingers working the blouse hooks without fumbling this time, tucking the pleats of her saree with the brisk efficiency of a woman who had done this ten thousand mornings of her life. The waist chain stayed at her hip, hidden now beneath silk.

“The blue blouse,” Rangam said, folding it over her arm. “I’ll have to find a reason for it in my closet.”

“Tell Moorthy you bought it for Diwali.”

“He won’t ask.” She said it flat. Not bitter. Just true.

Selvam buttoned his cuff. Watched her tuck the last pleat into her waistband, her hands moving fast now, practiced, the woman from downstairs reassembling herself piece by piece.

“Rangam.”

She looked up.

“This isn’t over,” he said. “Whatever this is.”

She didn’t answer right away. Her fingers found the chain at her hip through the silk, pressed once, like checking it was still there.

“I know, but I don’t want to hurt Yazhini” she said.

The curtain parted before he could say anything else. The attendant stood there, a folded paper bag in her hands, the original chain still tucked beneath her arm.

“All done, saar, madam?” she said, her eyes moving once over Rangam’s hastily settled pleats, the faint flush still high on her cheeks.

“Yes,” Selvam said. “Thank you.”

“The gold suits you very well, madam.” The attendant’s gaze dropped briefly to the silk at Rangam’s hip where the chain hid beneath cream fabric. “Forty years I have sold these chains. Rarely do I see one settle so naturally.”

Rangam’s hand found the folded blue bundle on her arm. She pressed it tighter against her side. “We’ll take it. The chain.”

“Of course, madam.” The attendant turned toward the stairs. “I will prepare the bill. Take your time coming down.”

Her footsteps receded. Soft on the wooden steps.

Rangam set the blue bundle on the bench. Her hands weren’t done shaking yet, though her sari sat perfect, every pleat in place.

Then the stairs creaked. Heavy. Measured. A man’s full weight on wood that had barely held the attendant’s.

“Rangam, ma!” Moorthy’s voice boomed up the stairwell before his face appeared. “Finished with the chain? I want to see it on you before we go for lunch.”

Rangam’s spine went rigid. She looked at Selvam. He looked back, jaw tight, nothing in his face giving anything away.

Moorthy’s head cleared the top step. His mustache lifted when he saw her. “There you are! Why you took so long, dear?”

“Clasp was stiff,” Rangam said. Her voice came out even. She did not know how.

Moorthy waddled closer, breathing a little hard from the stairs, and reached for her waist without ceremony. His thick fingers found the silk at her hip, patting, searching for the shape of gold underneath.

“Let me see,” he said. “Lift the sari a little, ma. I’m your husband, no shame.”

The word landed in the small corridor like a dropped plate.

The attendant, halfway down the stairs with her bill in hand, stopped. Turned.

Her eyes went from Moorthy’s hand at Rangam’s hip to Selvam standing three feet away, fully dressed, his shirt buttoned to the collar.

Rangam watched the old woman’s face change. Slow. The polite blankness cracking into something sharper. Calculating. The attendant’s gaze moved once more between the two men ...  the short stout one with his hand possessively at his wife’s waist, and the tall composed one who had gone very still by the curtain.

“Husband,” the attendant repeated. Quiet. Almost to herself.

Moorthy didn’t notice. He was still patting at Rangam’s hip, trying to find the chain through the fabric. “Twenty-three years married and she still doesn’t let me see anything first,” he said, laughing, to no one, to everyone. “Selvam, you know how women are.”

Selvam said nothing. His hand had found the back of a chair, gripping the wood.

The attendant’s eyes narrowed, moving from Rangam’s hip to Selvam’s whitened knuckles on the chair back. Something settled in her expression. A decision made.

“Saar,” she said, stepping down the last two stairs. Her voice carried a brightness that hadn’t been there a moment ago. “The bill is ready. Also, I must tell you, the clasp on that chain is very stiff. I had to call your friend up to help, these old hooks need a man’s strength sometimes.”

Moorthy’s hand stilled at Rangam’s hip. He looked at the attendant. Then at Selvam. His mustache twitched, slow, processing.

“My friend helped with the clasp?” he said.

“Yes saar. I called him up myself. Your wife was struggling alone.” The attendant’s tone stayed light. Practiced. “These new designs, the hooks are nothing like the old ones. Even young men have trouble.”

Rangam kept her eyes on the floor. Her hands found the folded blue bundle on the bench again, busywork, something to hold.

Moorthy’s chest puffed back out, the suspicion draining as quickly as it had come. “Ah. Yes. Good thing he was nearby.” He patted Selvam’s shoulder, hard, genial. “Useful man to have around, eh? Launches rockets, fixes clasps.”

“Happy to help,” Selvam said. His hand loosened on the chair back. Not fully. Not yet.

“Show me, then.” Moorthy turned back to Rangam, tugging at the silk near her hip again. “Let me see this gold that caused so much trouble.”

Rangam’s fingers caught his wrist. Gentle. Redirecting. “Not here, Moorthy. In the car. People are watching.”

“Nobody is watching.” He laughed, loud, but let his hand drop anyway, already moving toward the stairs, already thinking of lunch. “Come, come. Vanitha is waiting downstairs with a jhumka she won’t stop admiring. We’ll be here till evening at this rate.”

He started down. His weight creaked each step.

Rangam followed Moorthy down the stairs, her footsteps careful on the old wood.

Selvam stayed where he was. His hand found the chair back again.

The attendant waited until their voices faded into the shop below, Moorthy’s laugh carrying over the hum of ceiling fans. She turned.

Her face had changed completely. The brightness gone. In its place, something flat and searching.

“That man,” she said. Low. “He called her his wife.”

Selvam said nothing. His jaw tightened.

“I thought you were her husband.” The attendant’s eyes moved over him, slow, reassessing everything she’d seen in the last hour. “I threw the briefs in myself. The saree. I thought... ” She stopped. Shook her head once, sharp. “Forty years I have been matching husbands to wives in this shop. I have never been wrong.”

“You weren’t entirely wrong,” Selvam said. His voice came out quieter than he meant it to.

“Don’t.” The word cut through the small corridor. Not loud. Worse than loud. “Don’t tell me what I was or wasn’t.”

She set the bill down on the narrow bench beside his folded trousers from an hour ago, though the trousers were gone now, worn, buttoned, ordinary again.

“I thought I was helping a marriage,” she said. “A husband and wife, cold between them, needing something to remember. I have done this before. Small things. A saree thrown at the right moment. A curtain left open a crack.” Her hands folded in front of her, fingers laced tight. “I was proud of it. My little gift to tired couples.”

Selvam watched her face work through it. The old eyes narrowing, then softening, then narrowing again.

“That man downstairs,” she said. “Short. Loud. Mustache like a politician. He is her husband.”

“Yes.”

“And you.”

“Her son-in-law.”

The word landed in the corridor and stayed there. The attendant’s mouth opened slightly. No sound came.

She looked at the bench where the clothes had hung an hour before. The curtain still carrying the faint shape of where two sarees, two blouses, two bras had dbangd side by side.

“I gave you her undergarments,” she said, almost to herself. “I called you to help with a clasp I thought was your own wife, not her lover’s.”

“You gave us a room,” Selvam said. “You gave us privacy. What we did with it was ours.”

“You let an old woman believe she was mending something.” Her voice shook now, the first real crack in forty years of soft manners. “I sat on that stool and I was happy for you both. I thought, finally, something stirring in a marriage that had gone quiet. I have seen enough cold couples to know the shape of it. I was glad.”

She picked up the bill again. Did not hand it over.

“Was any of it true,” she said. “Was she cold with her husband because of something real, or because she was already... ”

“Don’t finish that sentence.”

The attendant’s mouth closed. Her eyes stayed on him a moment longer, cataloguing something, filing it away the way she filed away forty years of hooks and clasps and the particular silences of women in fitting rooms.

“The chain she is wearing,” she said finally. “It was not bought today.”

“No.”

“I thought it was new. For the occasion.” A short, humorless sound left her, not quite a laugh. “I am a foolish old woman. I saw gold and silk and I thought, beginning. Not continuation.”

Selvam reached for the bill she still held. She let it go without resistance, her fingers slack.

Selvam walked downstairs and joined the rest of his family. The attendant stood frozen.
