By the time Padma reached home, the evening light had already begun to fade.
She placed her handbag on the table and carefully kept the shopping bag beside it.
Mohan was sitting on the sofa, looking through something on his phone.
He looked up.
? Mohan: “You’re back.”
? Padma: “Hmm.”
He noticed the new shopping bag.
? Mohan: “You bought something?”
Padma nodded.
? Padma: “A saree.”
Mohan smiled.
? Mohan: “Let me see.”
She hesitated for a moment before taking the saree out.
Mohan unfolded part of it.
It was the elegant black party-wear saree Rajan had selected earlier.
His expression changed slightly.
? Mohan: “This is different from what you normally buy.”
? Padma: “I know.”
? Mohan: “It’s beautiful.”
Padma looked at the saree rather than at him.
? Padma: “I wasn’t planning to buy it.”
? Mohan: “Then what happened?”
She paused.
There was no reason to hide the truth.

Padma: “I liked it.” She lied !! 

Mohan: “You should wear it sometime.”
Padma looked at the saree for a moment.
? Padma: “Maybe for dinner or some evening function.”
She folded it again and placed it neatly on the sofa.
Mohan noticed that she seemed slightly distracted.
? Mohan: “Everything okay?”
Padma looked at him.
? Padma: “Yes. Why?”
? Mohan: “You seem quiet.”
She smiled.
? Padma: “Just tired. The shop was crowded.”
She picked up the saree and walked toward the bedroom.
But as she entered, her eyes fell once more on the black fabric.
For a brief moment, she remembered Rajan holding it up in the shop. 
It would suit your figure.
She immediately pushed the thought away.

She placed the saree inside the cupboard and closed the door.

She didn’t tell Mohan about that moment.
Some things, she felt, were better left inside her own thoughts.
