“Did you just... ” he began.

“Yes, your friend thought I am Yazhini and he walked in.”

“And that’s exactly why I said, we should have left them go shopping privately.” Rangam hissed at Moorthy.

Selvam and Yazhini came out of the fitting room interrupting.

“We’re taking all three,” Selvam called to the saleswoman. His voice filled the boutique. “The ivory. The red. The black. All three sets.”

The bell above the door chimed. Soft. Final.

Outside, Chennai heat pressed against the windows. Traffic moved in the lane. A temple bell rang distantly. The four of them stood in the boutique light, the packages in Rangam’s practical hands, and something between laughter and relief moved through the space between them.
