The day passed slowly after the grandparents' morning activities and Appa's silent return from wherever he had gone. Appa sat on his cot in the corner of the hall, his body folded into itself, his face turned toward the wall as it had been since we returned from the temple journey. Appa looked at her for a long moment, his eyes meeting hers with a bitterness that made the air between them crackle. "Why can't you tell that also to him?" he asked, his voice low but carrying clearly in the quiet room. "Why are you asking me? He is the one who arranges everything now. He is the one who takes care of everything. Why don't you ask that guy to call the auto?"

"Arjun," she said, her voice steady despite the tension, "go call an auto. Quickly."

Ravi remained calm even as Appa's grip tightened on his shirt. He reached into his pocket and pulled out some money—a small bundle of notes that he showed in front of Appa's face, fanning them slightly so that the paper caught the evening light. Appa's grip tightened for a moment, his knuckles white with the force of his anger. I sat in a corner of the hall, unable to focus on anything.
