Chapter 164: Beauty of 4 States
# Scene 1
Rao’s call came at four.
“An informal reception, sir. Cultural exchange. Rising talent from all four states.”
Selvam pressed the phone to his ear. The Secretariat’s ceiling fan turned slow overhead.
“Purpose?” he said.
“Goodwill. The union’s creative industries need cohesion. Young voices. Fresh perspective.” Rao’s voice was smooth. Warm. The particular cadence of a man who had been placing ideas in rooms for thirty years. “Nothing formal. Private guesthouse. Secure.”
“The location.”
“Eleven kilometers south. Government property. Discreet.”
Selvam looked at his desk. The evening was empty. Yazhini at home in Adyar. Vanitha in Los Gatos with the boutique’s peak orders. Summer running the constellation deployment from the Nakamura penthouse.
“Seven-thirty,” he said.
The Aston Martin’s engine hummed low on the coastal road. British Racing Green dark against the evening. The V8 pulled clean through the curves. Manual. Six gears. His hand on the shifter.
The guesthouse appeared behind a high wall. Colonial. Whitewashed stone. Pillars. A wide veranda wrapped three sides. Jasmine climbed the railings. The scent hit him before he cut the engine.
A servant took the keys. Silent. The front door was heavy teak. Hinges that did not squeak.
Inside: high ceilings. Polished floors. The air cool and still. Fresh jasmine hung in garlands from the cornices. Brass lamps lit the corridor. No electricity visible. Just flame and shadow.
The dining room opened at the end of the hall. Long table. White cloth. Candles in silver holders. The light was warm. Low. Jasmine petals scattered across the tablecloth.
Four women sat at the table. Already there. Already seated.
They rose when he entered. Fabric rustled. Bangles chimed.
Rao stepped forward from the shadows. Silk shirt. Gold watch. His smile was practiced. Exact.
“Sir. Allow me.”
He moved to the first woman. Left to right. The order deliberate.
“Preethi Reddy. Telugu cinema…”
“... needs no introduction,” Selvam said.
Rao stopped mid-breath and stepped back half a pace with the smoothness of a man who had been interrupted by important people before.
Selvam looked at her. Emerald silk. The pleats hung low and the gold chain lay flat across her navel, catching candlelight every time she breathed.
“The reels for the new film,” he said. “The item number with the drum section. You did it in one take.”
Her mouth opened. “Three takes, sir.”
“Then the other two were wasted.” He held her eyes. “The footwork in the second verse. That was spectacular.”
Preethi laughed, low and unguarded, one hand going to the gold at her waist. “You watched my reels.”
“I watch everything.” He shook her hand. Warm fingers. Bangles clicking against his wrist. “Chief Ministers have phones too.”
“I’m... ” She looked at Rao, then back. “Sir, you landed a rocket. I watched that with my mother. She cried. And now I’m standing here.”
“The rocket was easier than the drum section.”
Rao moved on, unhurried. “Anupama Menon. Malayalam cinema. Trained in... ”
“Mohiniyattam.” Selvam turned to her. Cream Kasavu, wide gold border, the pearl choker sitting high on her throat. Her spine was straight as a plumb line even standing still. “Fourteen years?”
“Sixteen, sir.”
“It shows.” His eyes went down ... the choker, the collarbones, the deep line of shadow between her breasts where the cream blouse cut across, the flat bare stretch of waist below it ... and came back up to her face. She had not looked away. She had been watching him look. “The temple sequence in your second film. You held the arangetram posture for the whole song. No editor could fake that.”
“Nobody has mentioned that sequence to me in two years.”
“Then nobody was paying attention.”
Her fingers touched the pearls at her throat. “Sir, I saw you on the television for the oath. My father kept the newspaper.”
“Tell your father I said his daughter has better posture than anyone in my cabinet.”
Samyuktha, beside her, made a sound that was almost a laugh and caught it.
“Samyuktha Hegde,” Rao said. “Kannada cinema. State award for her debut... ”
“For the sister,” Selvam said. “The film with the bus depot.”
She went very still. Wine-red chiffon, the pallu pinned diagonally at her shoulder, the rest of her bare down one side. Candlelight ran along the strap across her back when she shifted her weight.
“You’ve seen it,” she said.
“Of course.” He looked at her properly. The blouse was cut low and the chiffon did nothing to hide it, and he let his eyes rest there a beat longer than was polite, and when he came back up she was still holding his gaze with her chin lifted. “The scene at the ticket counter. You didn’t cry. Everyone else in that film cried. You didn’t.”
“The director wanted tears.”
“The director was wrong.”
Her breath went out through her nose. “I’m twenty-two, sir. I read about you in my engineering entrance coaching centre. Physics tuition. Your booster.”
“And now?”
“I can’t believe I am standing next you.”
“I can’t believe I am standing next to a star I’ve only seen on my phone.” Selvam said it back to her.
Meera was last. Deep blue raw silk. Gold waist chain. Jasmine braided thick into her hair, the same jasmine as the garlands in the corridor, so the whole room smelled of her.
Rao opened his mouth. Selvam raised two fingers.
“Chennai,” he said. “You’re on the flyover at Kathipara. Thirty feet high. I drive under you four mornings a week.”
Meera smiled slowly. “Which one? The jewellery hoarding or the phone one?”
“Both. The jewellery one is better lit. The phone one is a better photograph.” He looked down. The embroidery on her blouse was heavy and stiff and the swell above it was not, and the gold chain lay in the crease of her waist, and he took all of it in and did not hurry about it. When he looked up she had one eyebrow raised.
“You were saying, sir.”
“I was saying your last film deserved a better release date.”
“Tell the distributors.”
“I could.”
That landed. She held his eyes. The candle between them guttered and steadied.
“Sir,” she said. “Nobody has ever told me my release date was wrong.”
“Then nobody has watched the film.”
“Have you?”
“On my jet. Delhi to Chennai. I watched the third act twice.”
Behind him, Preethi said, “He watches everything. He said so.”
Rao folded his hands. “Shall we sit, sir?”
“Sit,” Selvam said.
They sat. Silk settled. Bangles rang against the table edge. Four women in candlelight and jasmine, and Selvam pulled his chair in and reached for the water jug himself before the servant could get to it.
“Now,” he said. “Tell me about Telugu box office.”
Preethi told him about the box office the way a woman tells a story she has told before and still enjoys. Opening weekend numbers. The Sankranthi release war. The three films that collided in January and how two of them died.
“So the audience decides in four hours,” Selvam said.
“Three. By the interval the verdict is on Twitter.” She tore a piece of parotta and did not eat it. “The producers watch the interval hashtag. Not the review.”
“That’s efficient.”
“That’s brutal.”
“It’s the same thing.”
She laughed. Across the table Anupama was eating with her left hand resting flat on the tablecloth, fingers together, thumb tucked. Sixteen years of that.
“And Kerala?” he said.
Anupama looked up. “Kerala watches the whole film, sir. Then it decides. Then it argues for a month.”
“That’s worse.”
“That’s better.”
The fish came. Meera’s jasmine got stronger every time she moved her head. Samyuktha asked him about the landing burn and did not ask it the way journalists asked it ... she wanted the throttle numbers. He gave them to her. She repeated them back wrong by one decimal and he corrected her and she said sorry and he said don’t, the coaching centre didn’t cover gimbal authority.
“Physics tuition covered inclined planes,” she said.
“Then you’ve had the hardest part.”
Rao ate almost nothing. Selvam noticed that. Rao poured wine twice, laughed at the right places, said perhaps four sentences the entire meal, and none of them were about the union’s creative industries.
The plates went. Coffee came in small steel tumblers, the good kind, decoction dark and thick.
Selvam drank his standing.
“Sir.” Rao was already on his feet. Napkin folded. Hands folded over it. “I have a seven-thirty in the morning with the port trust. Forgive an old man.”
“It’s nine-forty.”
“An old man, sir.” The smile came out. Practiced. Exact. Held two beats too long.
He bowed his head ... to Selvam, not to the table ... and turned and went out through the teak door, and the servant went with him, and the second servant took the coffee tray and went with him too.
The door shut. The hinges did not squeak.
Selvam stood with the empty tumbler in his hand and listened to a car start in the compound and pull away down the gravel.
Nobody at the table had moved.
Not one of them had reached for a phone. Not one had asked when the car was coming. Preethi had her elbow on the table and her chin on her palm and she was looking at him. Meera had turned her chair. Actually turned it, so it faced him and not the table. Samyuktha’s pallu had slipped off the shoulder pin at some point during the coffee and she had not fixed it.
Anupama was watching him work it out. He could see her watching him work it out.
Four women. Four states. Introduced left to right in an order Rao had chosen. Placed in the room before he arrived so he would walk in to find them already seated. A guesthouse eleven kilometres out with a wall around it and one door.
Goodwill.
Selvam set the tumbler down on the white cloth. The sound it made was small.
“Rao,” he said.
“Sir?” Preethi said.
“Nothing.” He looked at the closed teak door, then back at the table. “He has been doing this a long time.”
Preethi’s mouth curved. “Rao told us in the car.”
“He told you in the car.”
“He told us a lot of things in the car.”
“Such as.”
“That the Chief Minister works too much.” She lifted one shoulder. The emerald silk slid. “That his new wife is busy. That we should be ourselves.”
“Were you?”
“I’m being myself right now, sir.”
Selvam let the silence sit. Nobody filled it. That told him the rest.
“You all knew,” he said. “Before the car.”
“Yes.” Meera. Flat and clear, no apology in it at all. She was still turned toward him with her hands in her lap. “I asked him twice. Once on the phone and once at the gate. He answered both times.”
“And you came.”
“I came.” She tilted her head. “Is that a problem, sir?”
“I’m establishing facts.”
“Then establish them properly.” Meera stood up. The blue silk fell straight. The gold chain at her waist caught the candle. “Four adults. Told plainly. Here by choice. Any of us can walk out of that door and the driver is in the compound and nobody in this state will hear about it from me.” She paused. “Now you.”
“Now me what.”
“Now you tell us whether you knew.”
“I did not.” He said it simply. “I thought I was coming to a dinner.”
Samyuktha made a small sound. “You came to a dinner.”
“I came to a dinner,” he agreed.
The candle between Meera and Anupama guttered. Anupama reached over without looking and straightened it in its holder with two fingers, precise, and the flame steadied.
“Sir,” she said. “There’s a room next door.”
“Is there.”
“They moved the furniture against the walls. I saw it when I came in.” Her chin was level. Pearl choker. Plumb-line spine. “There’s a sound system in it.”
Selvam looked at her for a while.
“Show me,” he said.
The second door opened off the corridor and the room behind it was twice the size of the dining hall.
Furniture against the walls. A long velvet couch running one side, wine-coloured, deep. Two armchairs shoved into a corner. The centre of the floor was bare polished teak, wide enough for eight people, and somebody had waxed it that afternoon because it caught the lamplight in long soft streaks.
A sound system sat on a side table. Small. Black. Somebody had already left it on standby, the little red light burning in the half-dark.
Selvam crossed to it and pressed the top button with one finger.
Something came out low. Strings. A slow four-count with a tabla under it, the kind of thing that played in hotel lobbies in Chennai and meant nothing and worked anyway.
He turned around.
Four of them in the doorway. Nobody had come in yet.
“Well,” he said.
Meera came in first. She walked to the middle of the floor and stopped there with her arms at her sides.
Then she began to dance.
A shift of weight onto her right foot, the hip going with it, the way it went in the songs ... the four-count picked up by her body and handed back. She lifted her arms, her armpits showing.
The saree swung a half-beat behind her, and every time the hip came over, the pleats pulled and the fold at her waist rode up and the navel came out into the lamplight.
Then her navel went hiding under the saree again. And came out again with every step of her dance.
Her navel out. Under. Out. Under. In time.
Selvam stood by the side table with his hand still resting on the top of the sound system and watched the gold chain ride on her waist through all of it, her cute navel going in and out of the saree.
Preethi came off the doorframe.
She got to the floor on Meera’s left and found the count in three steps, and she was faster about it, sharper ... her hips snapped where Meera’s swung ... and the emerald sat so low on her that there was nothing to hide. The thin chain across her navel jumped with every beat.
“You’re rushing it,” Meera said, not stopping.
“I’m on the beat.”
“You’re on the wrong beat.”
“There’s one beat, Meera.”
Anupama walked between them and did not say anything at all. She simply arrived, and her feet went down flat and deliberate, heel then whole sole, and her spine did not bend anywhere it was not supposed to bend.
Her cream saree moved less than the other two because she moved less. Only the hips. Only the waist. The pearl choker swayed against her throat and the wide gold border swung at her ankles and the pleats at her hip lifted and dropped and the shadow under her navel came and went with the precision of something counted out loud somewhere behind her eyes.
