Chapter 3 — Work as a Rope
They walked because she had told Jeeva the trip was content, and content was the last decent rope in her hand.
Sam filmed without touching her. He asked her to say the tree’s height again. He asked her to wait for light. She dipped under a branch and the neckline moved and cold found the top of her breast and her nipple scbangd wine lace and she kept the sentence about mist going so her face would not show it.
You disappeared for a second, he said, lowering the phone. We can do that shot later.
I’m fine.
She was a woman whose husband was twenty kilometres away with another woman, by design, and who could not tell the man with the camera that the design existed. So she smiled the vlog smile, which had always been a little lie and was now a larger one.
On the return her sandal slipped. He caught her elbow. Full fingers. Warm. The grip echoed in her clit like a stupid instrument. She thanked him and stepped away one beat late. The beat stayed.
In the cottage she made Maggi and talked battery percentages. He answered battery percentages. When she moved she could smell herself faintly. She wondered if he could. The wondering was already a finger.
Chapter 4 — Only the Hook
After food her shoulders hurt. The maxi hook sat where she could not reach. That was true. It was also a test she was giving herself.
Only the hook, she said.
He stood behind her. In the dark window they looked like a marriage. Knuckle at her nape. The zip. The wine strap, unavoidable. The dress loosened and slipped one shoulder. Lace. Skin. Almost a nipple in the glass. Three seconds. She caught the fabric with both hands.
Sorry. I should have done it inside.
It’s alright, he said, and the carefulness made it worse than crude.
He went to the window. She saw he was hard when he walked. She took the maxi off in the bathroom, pushed two fingers into the wet brief, found herself swollen and slick, and stopped before she came standing because an orgasm on his zip would have been a decision. She washed her hand and put the robe on. The robe hid nothing if she leaned.
Sam, she said from her side of the bed. I need you to understand something without asking me to explain it. I am married. I love my husband. This is work. If I have given you another impression I am sorry.
I didn’t bring you here to collect an impression, he said. I brought a camera because you asked for morning light. If the bed is a problem I can still go.
Stay. Then, slower: stay on your side.
