“No.” She put her mouth back on the head to stop herself and sucked, and he made the sound again, and she pulled off and looked up. “You’re doing that on purpose. You make me say everything.”

“You want to say it.”

“I don’t.”

“Then don’t.” His hand moved in her hair, slow, fingers spread. “Keep going.”

She kept going. She licked him from the base up in one long line and closed her lips over the head at the top and stayed there, and this time she went further, an inch, then a little more, and her jaw stretched and her eyes went wet and she breathed through her nose the way Vanitha Akka had somehow known to do without being told.

The saliva came again. It went over her lip and down her chin and off her chin onto her chest and she felt it land above the blouse, warm, and then go cold.

“That’s it, ma.”

Her eyes came up.

He was watching her mouth. Not her face. Her mouth.

She held there and hummed and felt the hum go into him, and his hand closed in her braid and the jasmine crushed and she smelled it, sudden and green and sweet, the temple smell, and she was doing this with jasmine in her hair after puja and her father asleep downstairs and she did not stop.

She pulled off, gasping. A thread hung off her lip and she caught it with her thumb and put her thumb in her mouth.

“Chi,” he said, but he was laughing.

“You did it in Vanitha Akka’s mouth,” she said. “You did it on her face.”

His hand stilled.

“Say it properly.”

“Ayyo.” She dropped her forehead against his thigh. Her whole face was burning against his skin. “Athaan, please, don’t... ”

“Say it.”

She lifted her head. Her braid had come half loose and there was jasmine on the marble beside her knee and she looked up at him and her voice came out very small and very clear.

“Come on my face.”

His hand went back into her hair.

“Open,” he said.

She opened.

He took himself in his hand and worked it twice, fast, and she saw his stomach go hard and she heard him say her name once, low, and then it hit her.

The first one came across her cheek. It landed high, near the bone, hot ...  hotter than she had imagined anything could be, hotter than the coffee ...  and it was heavy. That was the thing she had not been ready for. It had weight. It struck her and it sat there and then it started to slide.

She flinched and did not close her eyes.

The second one caught the corner of her mouth and went in, on her tongue, thick, and she gagged once on the salt of it and swallowed anyway and it clung to the back of her throat.

“Ayyo... ”

“Stay there.”

The third went across the bridge of her nose. She felt it on her eyelashes. She blinked and it dragged and one eye stung and blurred and she kept the other one on his face because she was not going to miss his face for anything.

The fourth landed on her chin and hung and let go and fell onto her chest, above the blouse, and ran down under the green cotton.

Then thinner ones, four or five, she lost count, one onto her lower lip and one onto her own thumb where it was still curled around him and one that dripped straight down off the head onto the thali at her throat, and she felt the gold go warm and wet.

His hand was shaking in her hair. She could feel it shaking against her scalp. Selvam Chandran’s hand.

She did that.

“Athaan,” she said, and it came out slurred, because her mouth would not close properly and she did not want to close it.

“Don’t wipe it.”

“I’m not.” Her voice was ruined. “I’m not, I’m not.”

He was breathing through his mouth above her. She had never once in nineteen years heard him breathe like that ...  not in the courtyard, not at the mandap, not in the gym doorway with his shirt off, and she had looked for it. She had gone looking for it since she was fourteen.

She sat back on her heels with her face dripping and looked up at him and started to laugh.

It came out of her in pieces. She could not help it. Her jaw ached and one eye was shut and there was a line of it running down past her nose to her upper lip and she was laughing on the marble floor of her mother’s house with jasmine crushed in her braid and her husband’s hand still shaking against her head.

“Chi,” he said. He sounded wrecked and pleased with himself both.

“Don’t laugh at me.”

“You’re laughing.”

“I’m allowed.” She got a breath. It came out with more laughing in it. “One eye, athaan. I can only see out of one eye.”

He crouched and took her chin in his hand and turned her face toward the window, into the light, and wiped under her eye with his thumb.

“Better?”

“Mm.” She blinked. Everything went blurry and then came back. “Now I can see both of you.”

He laughed at that. He put his hand flat on the top of her head like a blessing and stood and stepped over the veshti on the floor and went into the bathroom, and she heard the tap.

She got up off her heels and her knees screamed at her and she said ayyo out loud to nobody.

The washing took longer than she expected. Face soap, twice. Cold water into the one eye until it stopped stinging. The thali she wiped with the corner of a wet towel and then rinsed properly under the tap, holding the pendant in her palm, because it was the thali and there were limits. The green cotton above her blouse had a mark on it and she pressed the wet towel against it from behind and got it to nothing, or near enough.

Her braid was hopeless. She undid it and combed it out with her fingers and did it again and put the jasmine back in, the strand that had survived, and it sat crooked and she left it crooked.

Behind her he pulled a grey t-shirt over his head. She watched it happen in the mirror. The whole chest gone, just like that, under cotton, and she felt personally robbed.

“What,” he said.

“Nothing.”

“You made a face.”

“I did not make a face.” She picked up the empty davara and tumbler and stacked them. “Amma will be up.”

She stripped the sheet off the bed because there was no version of the world in which her mother saw that sheet, and she bundled it and pushed it to the bottom of the wash basket with her forearm, under her father’s shirts. She swept the petals into a heap with the side of her foot. She took the dead garlands off the bedposts and put them in the basket with the browning jasmine from the courtyard.

Down in the kitchen the pressure cooker was already going, three sharp whistles in a row, and the whole kitchen smelled of mustard seeds popping in oil.

Her mother was at the stove with a ladle. Her father was at the table with the ***** folded into quarters and a tumbler in front of him.

Yazhini stopped in the doorway. Selvam came in behind her and did not stop.

“Good morning, ma,” he said.

“Aan, va, va.” Her mother did not turn around. “Sit. Dosa in two minutes.”

Her father looked up over the top of the paper. Looked at Selvam. Looked at her. Looked back at the paper.

“Good morning, Appa,” Yazhini said.

“Mm.”

“Happy first morning,” Selvam said, and pulled out a chair.

Her mother turned around with the ladle still in her hand.

“Happy first morning,” she said. “Both of you. Nalla iru.”

And then she laughed. One short one, up through her nose, and her father’s paper came down flat on the table and he laughed too ...  a bark, embarrassed, into his tumbler ...  and Selvam laughed, and Yazhini stood there with her hands twisted in her davani and felt the heat go up the back of her neck and into her scalp, because they were all four looking at each other and every single one of them knew exactly what the laugh was about.

“Amma,” she said.

“What? I said nalla iru.”

“You said it like that.”

“How did I say it?”

“Chi.” Yazhini sat down fast in the chair next to Selvam and pulled the plate toward herself for something to hold.

Her father turned a page that he was not reading.

“Coffee?” her mother said to Selvam.

“She made it already. Upstairs.”

“Oh ho.” Her mother’s eyebrows went up. She pointed the ladle at Yazhini. “This one. Nineteen years I could not get her to boil water and now she is running a coffee shop for her husband.”

“It was good coffee,” Selvam said.

“Of course it was good. It was my filter.”

“That’s what she said.”

Yazhini put her forehead down on her own wrist for one second and then picked it back up.

The first dosa came onto her plate, thin and gold and crackling at the edges, and her mother followed it with chutney and a spoon of coconut chutney beside it.

“Eat, eat. Don’t let it get cold.”

Yazhini tore a piece and dipped it and got it into her mouth and it was too hot and she breathed around it.

Her mother came around behind her chair with the ladle still in her hand, and stopped.

“Wait.”

Yazhini froze with the dosa halfway to her mouth.

“You have something on your face.” Her mother leaned in. Her hand came up. “What is this, di. You are eating like a three-year-old.”

“Amma... ”

Her mother’s thumb pressed against the right side of her chin and dragged, quick and businesslike, the exact same motion she had used for nineteen years on curd rice and mango pulp and turmeric. Yazhini felt the pad of the thumb scbang along the bone.

She had washed. She had washed twice with soap and once with only water and she had looked in the mirror.

Not there. She had not looked there, under the curve, where the jaw met the throat.

“Amma, no... ”

Too late. Her mother’s thumb went straight into her own mouth, sucked clean off the thumb without a thought, the way she cleaned batter off her fingers forty times a morning at that stove.

And then her mother stopped moving.

Everything stopped. The ladle hung in her mother’s other hand. Her mother’s eyes came up and found Yazhini’s and stayed there and did not blink, and her thumb was still in her mouth, and the whole kitchen went so quiet that Yazhini could hear the oil ticking in the pan behind them.

Yazhini felt her own face go up in flames from the neck.

“Amma,” she said. It came out as air.

Her mother took the thumb out of her mouth. Slowly. She looked at it. Then she looked at Yazhini’s chin. Then at Yazhini’s face.

Then, without turning her head one degree toward the table, she said, “Moorthy. Finish your coffee and go and see about the flowers.”

Her father lowered the paper. “What flowers?”

“The flowers.”

“There are no flowers.”

“Then go and see why there are no flowers.”

He looked from his wife to his daughter. Yazhini could not make her chin come up off her chest. She could feel the whole side of her own jaw where the thumb had been, a cold clean patch of skin, and she knew exactly what had been sitting there in the crease under the bone since eight o’clock.

“Go and see about the flowers.”

Yazhini could not lift her head. She heard the chair scbang. She heard her father’s veshti rustle as he stood, and then she heard him not move, and she counted three whole seconds of him standing there.

“Appa,” she said, into the dosa. “Please.”

The bare feet went across the marble toward the courtyard door. It banged.

Nobody spoke. The oil ticked. Somewhere outside her father said something loud and pointless to the watchman about a hibiscus plant.

Yazhini put her hands over her face.

“Amma, I washed. I washed twice. I stood at the mirror... ”

“Under the chin, di.”

“I didn’t know to look under the chin!”

“Now you know.” Her mother picked the ladle back up. She turned to the stove and poured batter and it hissed and spread. Her back was to them. “This is why the older women tell you. Nobody tells you anything anymore. Everything you have to learn on the marble floor.”

Yazhini’s ears were roaring. She looked sideways.

Selvam was already standing.

He picked up his tumbler and drank the last of it in one go and set it down on the table without a sound, and he did not look at her mother and he did not look at Yazhini.

“I’ll see about the flowers,” he said.

“Aan,” her mother said to the stove.

He went out through the courtyard door. The latch clicked behind him. Yazhini heard him say something to her father outside, low, and heard her father answer too loudly about the watchman, and then the two voices moved away down the side of the house toward the gate.

He had left her here. He had walked out and left her at this table with a plate of dosa and her mother’s back.

The batter hissed on the pan.

“Amma.”

“Mm.”

“Amma, he... ”

“Eat.”

Yazhini looked at the dosa. She could not have eaten a grain of rice.

Her mother turned around. She had the ladle in one hand and she was wiping the other on the corner of her saree, and her face was not angry. That was the worst part. It was not angry at all. It was the face she made over the electricity bill.

“Is it... ” her mother said, and stopped.

Yazhini’s throat closed.

“Is it what I think,” her mother said.

“Yes, ma.” It came out of her flat and fast, before she could talk herself out of it. “It’s his semen.”

Her mother’s chin went up half an inch. Nothing else moved.

The oil ticked. A crow started up on the compound wall and Yazhini wanted to throw something at it.

“Right,” her mother said.

“Amma... ”

“On the chin.”

“Amma, please.”

“I am only saying.” Her mother turned back to the pan and slid the spatula under the edge of the dosa and lifted it and flipped it. “On the chin is the one place you cannot see in the mirror unless you go looking. Neck, you see. Chest, you see. Chin, no.” She set the spatula down. “This is how I learned also.”

Yazhini’s head came up.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

“You... ”

“Eat your dosa.”

“Amma.”

“What.”

“You swallowed his cum, ma. I am so sorry.”

“It’s ok.” Her mother turned back to the stove. “It’s not your fault, next time wash your chin.”

“Did he taste like salt?” Yazhini asked.

Her mother’s hand came down on the back of her head. Not hard. A flat smack against the crooked jasmine, the way she used to do it over spilled water.

“Ayyo, this girl.”

“You said it was okay.”

“It is okay. Your mouth is not okay.” Her mother pointed the ladle at her. “Nineteen years old. One night with a husband and you are asking your own mother questions like this at the breakfast table.”

Yazhini pulled a piece off the dosa. She could eat now. She did not know when that had happened.

“You didn’t answer.”

“I am not answering.”

“So it was bad.”

Her mother turned around fully. She had the spatula in one hand and the other hand on her hip and Yazhini saw her mouth twitch at the left corner and go still again.

“It was salt,” her mother said. “That is all it is. Salt and nothing. Same as anyone’s.”

“Same as Appa’s?”

The spatula came down on the counter with a crack.

“Yazhini.”

“What!” She was laughing into her wrist. She could not stop it. “You said same as anyone’s. You are the one who said it.”

“Chi. Eat.”

“I’m eating.”

“Eat properly.” Her mother slid the next dosa onto her plate and it came down too hard and folded at one edge. “And drink your coffee before it goes cold. And when he calls you, go. Don’t make him wait at the door.”

Yazhini dipped the dosa. Her jaw still ached when she chewed on the right side. She chewed on the left.

“Amma.”

“Mm.”

“Are you angry?”

Her mother did not turn around this time. The batter hissed. The crow on the wall started up again and stopped.

“Angry about what.”

“About... ” Yazhini looked at the door her father had banged. At the empty tumbler Selvam had set down without a sound. “About all of it. About last night. You could hear.”

“The whole street could hear.”

Her ears went hot. “Amma.”

“I am not angry.” Her mother’s back was straight over the pan. The saree pleats moved when she shifted her weight. “You want to know what I was doing at two o’clock this morning?”

“No.”

“Lying in the dark next to your father with my hand over my mouth.” She lifted the dosa.

"So, you only had a drop on your chin," her mother said. "The rest - did it taste good?"

“Amma.”

“I asked a question.” Her mother poured the next ladle. The batter hissed and spread in a circle and her mother spun it out with the back of the ladle, three quick turns, without looking at her. “You had it on your chin. That means you had it somewhere else also. Did it taste good or not?”

Her face was going to come off. She could feel it in her ears, in the roots of her hair, in the skin above her blouse where the wet had run and gone cold two hours ago.

“I’m not telling you.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re my mother.”

“And who taught you the hooks?” Her mother pointed the ladle over her shoulder without turning. “Who put you in the half saree? Who took the safety pin out?”

“That was... ” Yazhini pressed her palms against her own cheeks. They were hot enough to cook on. “Amma, that was different.”

“It was exactly the same.” The spatula went under the edge. “Answer.”

The crow came back on the wall. Outside her father was still going about the hibiscus, very loudly, to a watchman who had not said one word back.

“It was salt,” Yazhini said, to the table.

“Aan.”

“And... ” She stopped. She started again, smaller. “Thick, ma. Nobody tells you it’s thick.”

Her mother made a sound. Not a laugh. Something in her throat that she swallowed.

“It goes to the back,” Yazhini said. “It stays there. I drank the whole coffee and it was still there.”

“Water. Not coffee.”

“Now you tell me.”

“Now you know.” Her mother slid the dosa onto Yazhini’s plate. It landed straight this time. Gold at the edges, crackling. “Eat it hot.”

Yazhini tore a piece. Her hands were still shaking a little and she did not think it was from her mother.

“Amma.”

“Mm.”

“You’re not going to say anything about it? Really nothing?”

Her mother turned around then. She wiped both hands on the corner of her saree, slow, and leaned back against the counter and looked at her, and Yazhini made herself hold it.

“What should I say.” Her mother’s chin lifted. “Should I tell you it is dirty? It is not dirty. It is what it is. Every woman in this house has had it in her mouth at some time or other.”

Yazhini stared at the folded edge of the dosa.

“Amma.”

“What.”

“Every woman in this house is only two of us.”

Her mother picked up the spatula again. “Then you have your answer.”

The pressure cooker ticked as it cooled. Yazhini ate. The chutney was too much coconut and not enough green chilli and she did not say so because there were limits to how much she was willing to be looked at this morning.

“Drink,” her mother said, and put the tumbler in front of her.

Yazhini drank. It was her mother’s coffee, not hers ...  stronger, more decoction, the way her father liked it.

“Amma, one thing.”

“One thing.”

“Does it... ” She stopped. She turned the tumbler around on the table. “Does it get easier? The jaw.”

Her mother’s hand went still over the pan for a second and then kept going.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Ayyo, this girl, this is not the electricity board. I cannot give you a date.” The batter hissed. “It gets easier. That is all. Do not do it four times in one week and then complain to me.”

“I wasn’t going to complain.”

“You were complaining just now.”

“I was asking.”

“Same thing in this house.” Her mother slid the dosa off and switched off the gas and the hiss died out of the kitchen all at once, and the quiet after it felt enormous.

Her mother came and sat down. Across the table. In her father’s chair, with the folded ***** still lying there.

Yazhini put down the dosa piece.

“Listen to me now.”

“Ma.”

“No, listen.” Her mother put both forearms flat on the table. Her bangles clicked against the wood. “Yesterday morning I gave you away. In front of the fire, in front of the Chief Minister of this state, in front of every relative who has ever said one thing about my daughter’s colour.” Her chin came up. “Do you know what I was thinking when he tied the second knot?”

“No.”

“I was thinking, that girl does not know how to keep a saree on.”

Yazhini laughed. It got out of her before she could stop it, one wet snort.

“You laugh. I was thinking it seriously.” Her mother reached over and took a piece off Yazhini’s plate without asking, the way she had always done, and put it in her mouth. She chewed. She swallowed. “Now sit still. I am going to tell you one thing about the taste and then we will not talk about it again.”

“Amma, no... ”

“Sit still.”

Yazhini sat still. She wrapped both hands around the tumbler and looked at the coffee in it.

“There is salt first,” her mother said. “That much you found. Everyone finds the salt. But behind the salt there is a sweetness ...  not sugar sweet, not payasam. Like the water at the bottom of a tender coconut when it has been sitting in the shade. Faint. You have to wait for it.”

Yazhini’s chin came up.

“Then bitter, at the very back of the tongue, where the throat starts. Small. Like the skin of an almond.” Her mother’s fingers moved a little on the table, the way they moved when she was counting the pieces in a curry. “And underneath all of it, something like warm milk before the sugar goes in. That is the part that stays. That is the part you were still tasting when you drank your coffee.”

The kitchen was very quiet.

Yazhini put the tumbler down.

She had tasted every single one of them. She had them all sitting in her mouth right now, the whole ladder of them, and she had not had one word for any of it two minutes ago and now she had four.

“Ma,” she said.

“You felt it or not?”

“I felt it.” Her voice came out thin. “All of it. The coconut water one ...  amma, the coconut water one, that’s exactly... ”

“Aan.” Her mother sat back in the chair. “Good.”

“How do you know it like that?”

“Because I have a tongue and I use it for more than talking.” Her mother flicked her fingers, dismissing something. “And because it is not the same in every man. That is the thing you should be understanding, not standing there going ayyo ayyo like a fool.”

“Not the same?”

“Not the same at all.” Her mother leaned in. Her bangles slid down and knocked the table. “A man who drinks, it is bitter. Only bitter, all the way through, and it burns a little at the back. A man who smokes, it is worse...  tobacco sits in it. Ashy. You will know it the first time.”

Yazhini turned the tumbler around on the table. She did not want to think about which men her mother had learned that on.

“And a man who eats fried things all day and sits in a chair from morning to night, it is heavy. Sour at the end. Like buttermilk on the second day.” Her mother tapped one finger on the wood. “That is most men, di. That is what most women get.”

“Ma.”

“You did not get that.” Her mother sat back. She looked at Yazhini the way she looked at a vegetable seller who had brought good drumsticks for once. “You got the coconut water and the warm milk. Do you know why?”

Yazhini shook her head.

“Because that man drinks two litres of water before he does anything else in the morning. Because he has not touched a cigarette in his life and he takes one drink at a wedding and leaves half of it. Because he is in that gym every day at five and he eats fruit like a monkey and he does not put sugar in his coffee.” Her mother flicked her fingers again. “All of that goes into it. Everything a man puts in his mouth comes out of him somewhere. You are tasting his whole life, not just one night.”

Yazhini sat with that.

“So it’s... ”

“It is a delicacy, that is what it is.” Her mother said it flatly, the way she would say the tomatoes were good this week. “Nineteen years old and the first one you ever get is a delicacy. Some women go forty years and never taste anything but ash and buttermilk. You should be thanking Murugan in that puja room and not standing there going ayyo.”

“I didn’t stand there going ayyo.”

“You said ayyo four times.”

“Amma.”

“Aan?”

Yazhini looked at her mother across her father’s newspaper. The bangles. The turmeric under her nails. The same face that had scolded her for wet hair on the terrace and rubbed oil into her scalp on Saturdays.

“Amma.”

“Mm.”

“Appa.” She said it to the coffee. “Is Appa’s like that?”

The kitchen went completely still. Her mother’s hand stayed on the counter. The crow on the wall said something and shut up.

“Eat your dosa.”

“Amma... ”

“Eat.”

“You made me answer.” Yazhini set the tumbler down. Her ears were burning again and she did not care. “You made me sit here and say it. Thick, salt, all of it. You asked me at the stove with the ladle in your hand.”

“That is different.”

“Why is it different?”

“Because I am the mother.”

“You said every woman in this house.” Yazhini heard her own voice come out steadier than she expected. “You said it. Two of us. That was you.”

Her mother turned around. She did not look angry. She looked like she was doing a sum and not liking the answer, the same face she made at the electricity bill, and she stood there with the corner of her saree still in her hand.

“You want to know about your father.”

“Ma, I don’t want to know... ” She stopped. That was a lie and her mother would smell it. “I want to know if that is the normal one. If yours was the buttermilk one.”

Her mother pulled out the chair and sat back down in it. Slowly this time. The bangles came to rest against the wood.

“Sit properly.”

Yazhini sat properly.

“No,” her mother said.

“No what?”

“No, he is not like that.” Her mother’s chin stayed level. “Your father has not been inside a gym in his life. He eats four vadai on a Sunday and tells me it was two. He drinks with Venkatesh on the terrace and thinks I cannot smell it on the stairs.” She flicked her fingers once. “You know what he looks like. You have eyes. He was not always that shape but he has been that shape for a long time now.”

Yazhini did not say anything. There was nothing to say to it. She had eyes. She had watched her father climb the stairs one at a time with his hand on the rail for as long as she could remember.

“So it’s bitter,” she said.

“It is what it is.” Her mother reached over and took another piece off the plate. “Salt, and then nothing after the salt. No coconut water. Nothing at the end except the salt going flat.”

“Amma.”

“You asked.” Her mother chewed. Swallowed. “Do not make that face. He is a good man and he has kept a roof over your head for nineteen years and he went out into the courtyard just now to look at flowers that do not exist because his wife told him to. That is worth more than any taste.”

Yazhini turned the tumbler around again.

“Did you... ” She stopped. Started. “Did you still do it?”

“Ayyo.” Her mother put her hand flat over her own eyes for a second. “What kind of question is that in a kitchen.”

“You started it.”

“I started it and now I am finishing it.” Her mother dropped the hand. “Yes. I did it. Not because it was a delicacy. Because he is my husband and because a man’s face does something when you do it, and that face is worth the taste.” She pointed one finger, turmeric under the nail. “That is the part nobody tells you either. The taste is ten seconds. The face is the whole thing.”

Yazhini felt her mouth go.

She thought about the tendons in his throat when he laughed. The hand shaking against her scalp. The breathing through the mouth, which she had never heard in nineteen years of looking for it.

“I saw his face,” she said.

“Aan.”

“Amma, he... ” She got both hands around the tumbler. “He was shaking. His hand was shaking in my hair.”

Her mother sat back.

Something moved across her face that Yazhini could not read, and she did not try, because it was gone in the next breath and replaced with the electricity bill.

“Selvam Chandran,” her mother said.

“Mm.”

“Forty-eight years old. Two hours last night and then again this morning on my marble floor.” Her mother picked up the folded ***** and put it down again in the same place. “And he was shaking.”

“Amma.”

“I am not saying anything.” Her mother stood up.
