Adultery Radiance of Vanitha, Daughter-in-Law and Instagram Influencer
# Scene 2

Yazhini pulled back from his mouth. Her lips were wet.

“Mom said I need to get your blessings,” she said.

She knelt. The half-saree pooled around her knees. Crimson silk whispered against the floor.

She reached for his feet. Both hands. Her forehead inclined. The thali pendant swung forward. Gold caught light.

“Please,” she said. “I need your blessings.”

The word carried its other meaning. The one Vanitha had shown her. Two women on their knees. His cock between them. Semen across their faces. Yazhini’s mouth clumsy beside Vanitha’s practiced one. The photographs afterward, spread on the villa floor.

She controlled her smile. Thinking about that cock waiting under the veshti. Thinking about the night ahead.

Selvam’s mouth tilted. The left corner lifted.

“There’s time for that blessing,” he said. Not refused. Later.

He put both hands in her hair. Warm. His thumbs found her temples.

“Nalla iru, ma.” The murmur Krishnamoorthy would recognize. Ancient. Simple.

He lifted her by the elbows until she was standing. Her weight came up against his chest.

Through the wall, Rangam’s voice whispered low. “He’s giving her blessings. I am so proud of her.”

Selvam wrapped his arms around her waist. Pulled her close. The davani had nowhere to go; it was tied to his hands.

“This half-saree is driving me crazy,” he said.

Yazhini’s face came up. Her smile broke through. Bright. Unafraid.

“That was my mother’s idea.”

The next room went quiet. Then a sound. Rangam’s laugh. Soft. Under her breath.

Moorthy’s weight shifted. “You sent the girl in a half-saree?”

“What difference does it make?” Rangam’s voice. Warm. Unapologetic.

Selvam did not undress her like a task. He held her. His arms around her waist. His chin against her hair.

The half-saree unraveled from the embrace. The pallu slid off her chest. Silk whispered to the floor.

Her breasts were bare above the ruined dbang. The cropped blouse was still hooked. Doing almost nothing now that the davani had slipped. The gold waist chain sat across her navel. The thali warmed her throat.

He looked at her for a long time. His hands stayed at her waist.

“You’ve grown so much,” he said.

Then, quieter: “What cup size are you?”

Through the wall, Rangam’s whisper: “B.” Proud. A woman who had dressed that chest an hour ago.

Selvam took the rest of the half-saree off her. Slow. The skirt came loose. The davani followed. Silk pooled at her feet.

She stood in the front-hook blouse. The waist chain. The thali. Nothing else.

He touched the first hook with his thumb. The metal was warm.

“Front hooks,” he said. “Your mother’s idea as well?”

Yazhini’s ears went hot. She did not answer. The answer was already in the next room. They could both feel it.

He worked the first hook. A small click. The blouse parted an inch.

He did not hurry. His eyes stayed on her face. That was what the placket was built for.

Second hook. The line between her breasts appeared. Warm skin. Gold chain above.

Third hook. More skin. The blouse fell open to her sternum.

Fourth hook. Her breasts were visible now. The thin cotton bra underneath. White. Simple.

Each hook opened a little more of her to the jasmine-smelling room. He watched her eyes while his fingers did the work. Old-college. Unhurried. The joke made literal.

The blouse parted down the middle. He slid it off her shoulders with the same care he had used on the three knots that morning. Set it on the nightstand.

The bra came next. Thin cotton. Rangam had put it on her under the half-saree. He took it off the same way. Not pulled. Not dropped. His fingers found the clasp at the back. One motion. The cotton fell away.

She stood in the waist chain and the thali. Nothing else above the hips.

“God, you’ve grown so much.”

He put his mouth on her with extreme care.

He started at the first breast as if it might bruise. His tongue flat against the nipple. Warm. Wet. Then the heat of his mouth closed over it. He sucked. Gentle. Learning the weight of a nineteen-year-old chest in his hand.

The sound she made was not a word. It was a whimper. Small. Startled. The sound of a girl who had been looked at all day and was only now being tasted.

He turned to the other breast. He did not treat it as the leftover one. His mouth closed over the nipple. Same slow care. The chain was cold against his jaw when he changed sides. Her skin warmed under his tongue.

Yazhini’s hands found his hair. Her fingers forgot what to do there. They gripped. Released. Gripped again.

When he drew on her more firmly, the whimper changed pitch. Higher. Broken. She could not swallow it back.

Through the wall, Moorthy’s jaw set. He looked at the plaster. The way he had looked past her braid at the thali.

“A father should not have to hear that,” he said. Without turning.

Rangam did not get up. She listened to the next whimper with her eyes half-closed. Admiring it. Certain it was her daughter’s. Proud in the same full-chested way she had been proud of the half-saree.

She did not look sorry.

The half-saree was gone.

# Scene 3

Selvam got on his knees in front of her. The way she had gone to her knees for the blessing.

He worked the last of the inner skirt off her hips. The silk dropped. Heavy. Warm.

The panties followed. Thin cotton. A thing Rangam had put on her under the half-saree. They slid down her thighs. Fell.

She stood in the waist chain. The thali. The rest of the gold she had been wearing since dawn.

Nineteen years old. Suddenly more naked than the blouse coming off had made her.

His mouth found her navel first. The dip the chain was built to sit in. He kissed her there with the same unhurried care he had used on her mouth and on her chest.

He did not rush the line down.

Each kiss was lower than the last. The soft plane under the navel. The low belly. The inside of one hip. His lips warm against her skin.

His mouth reached her clit. Wet. Heat. He tasted what he had been talking around all evening.

Her hands went into his hair again. The bangles found him. Gold knocked gold. A sharp sound in the quiet room.

He stilled. Lifted his face.

What he saw: the extra necklace crossing the thali. The earrings heavy on her lobes. The stacked bangles covering both wrists. The flowers dying in her braid. Rings on three fingers. Small bright things a bride did not think to take off because nobody had told her the night had started.

“You’re still dressed for the mandap,” he said quietly.

He took the jewelry off one by one.

The earrings first. Gold hoops. He unhooked them gently. Set them on the nightstand.

The extra chain at her throat. He unhooked it without touching the thali. The gold links whispered against her skin. Gone.

The bangles. He slid them down over her hands. One by one. Counted them like the hooks. The metal was warm from her wrists. They stacked on the nightstand in a gold pile.

The flowers from her hair. Jasmine. Dying. He worked them free of the braid. Their scent filled his palms.

The rings. Three of them. He slid each one off. Her fingers were small in his.

He left the thali where he had tied it. Three knots. Morning light.

He left the waist chain where he had put it. Across her navel. Gold against gold skin.

When he was done, she looked younger. Not less married. The two things he refused to take off were the two things that said the room was his.

He put his mouth back on her clit.

He stayed there until she was wet enough that it was no longer a question. His tongue flat. Then circling. Then flat again. Reading every shift in her breathing.

Through the wall, in the next room, Moorthy heard a quieter sound than the breast-whimpers. Softer. Wet. He hated it more for being quieter.

Rangam knew the difference. She did not explain it to him.

Selvam knew she was wet. He could taste it. Feel it. Her thighs trembled against his shoulders.

He lifted her off the floor. She was light against his chest. Waist chain still on. Thali still on. The rest of the gold already laid on the nightstand in the order he had taken it.

He carried her to the bed Rangam had dressed that evening. Jasmine petals. A little rose. Already bruising under her back and the chain.

In the next room, the talking had stopped. Moorthy heard the lift... the small sound of her leaving the floor... and could not decide whether silence was better.

Rangam knew it was not silence. She waited for the next sound with her mouth closed.

Selvam came over on top of her. His heaviness spread across her slender body. Chest to belly to the white veshti still knotted at his waist.

He kept some of the weight in his arms so she could breathe.

“Are you all right with all of this?” he asked.

He waited. The question was not decoration.

Yazhini had to find a voice that had been only breath since his mouth left her. She looked at his face instead of the floor.

“I waited for so long for this,” she said.

He did not take the veshti off. He worked his hand under the white veshti. Wiggled his briefs down his hips. Drew himself out into the room between them.

Veshti cloth stayed. White pooled around his thighs.

Yazhini felt him before she saw him. The weight of his cock falling between her thighs. The head knocked the inside of one thigh, then the other. Warm. Heavier than the jewelry he had just taken off her.

He took his cock in his hand. Found her clit with the wet head. Held there. Not in. Just that.

“I broke your hymen the first time,” he said. Still looking at her face. “I could only get the head inside then. Will you be all right taking all of me tonight?”

She gathered her voice the way she had gathered it for the milk.

“I want to try, uncle,” she said.

The word left her mouth. She bit it. Her teeth caught her lower lip. He was not her uncle anymore.

Through the wall, Moorthy flinched. As if the girl in the next room were still the neighbor’s child. Rangam heard the bite after it. Knew the correction was coming.

The cock whispered against her thighs. Warm. Heavy. She went dripping around nothing. Wet enough to take him.

He lowered. His forehead found hers.

“Yazhini,” he said. Her name first. Then: “You are my wife.”

He pushed his cock inside her wet but tight little pussy, gently. Only as much as the last time at first. The head pushed past the resistance. Wet. Hot.

Then more. Slow. The veshti pooled between them. The waist chain pressed against his stomach. The thali warmed her throat.

Yazhini’s whimper came louder than the ones he had pulled from her breasts. It was not a word. It was the sound of a nineteen-year-old taking a forty-eight-year-old husband’s cock. Past the place he already knew. Deeper than before.

Rangam and Moorthy both knew that sound. It was their daughter’s.

Moorthy could not stand it. His jaw set. His eyes fixed on the ceiling. A father hearing what a father should not hear.

Rangam did not look, sorry. She looked proud. Her hand on her husband’s arm. Her eyes half-closed. Listening to the girl she had dressed in a half-saree an hour ago.

He held there. Not moving. Only the head and the first inch past it, and she could feel every ridge of him where she had never felt anything before.

“Breathe,” he said.

She breathed. Her chest lifted under his. The chain slid against her belly.

“Sorry,” she said. “For the... for saying uncle.”

“Say it again and I’ll stop.”

Her eyes came open. “No.”

“Then what am I?”

“My husband.” Her voice cracked in the middle of it. “You’re my husband.”

“Good.” He pushed.

The stretch went past what she knew. Past the place that had hurt in the villa and stopped her. She got a hand onto his shoulder and dug in and the sound came out of her anyway, high, split down the middle.

“Too much?”

“No... wait... ” Her thighs shook. “Wait. Wait.”

He waited. He stayed exactly where he was, half in, the veshti cloth warm and damp between their stomachs, and he did not move his hips at all. His thumb found the corner of her mouth.

“Amma said it would hurt,” she said.

“What else did she say?”

“That I should... ” Her breath went. “That I should not stop you.”

“That isn’t the rule tonight.”

“It’s my rule.”

His jaw moved. She felt it against her temple.

“Say the word if it’s too much,” he said. “I’ll hear it.”

“I know.”

“Say you know.”

“I know.” She pulled at his shoulder. “Please. More.”

He gave her more. Slow, and it did not stop being slow, and that was worse and better both ...  the deliberate inch, and then another, the burn going deep and then deeper into a place she had no name for. Her heels came off the petals. Jasmine crushed under her back. The room smelled like flowers and skin and milk.

“Uncle... ” She caught it, too late, teeth on her lip.

“Yazhini.”

“Sorry. Sorry.”

“Say my name.”

“Selvam.”

“Again.”

“Selvam.” It came out on nothing, no breath behind it, and she felt him go the last of the way in and settle, all of him, the whole length of him where the head had stopped last time. Her mouth opened and no sound came out for a full second.

Then it did.

“There,” he said. Low. Against her ear, and Rangam heard it come through the wall ...  that sound, the long one, the one that was not pain any more.

She opened her eyes in the dark.

Her hand was still on Moorthy’s arm. She could feel the tendon standing under his skin, hard as a rope. Good. Let it stand.

The sound came again. Shorter this time. Broken in three places. Her daughter’s voice, doing something it had never done in this house, in the room Rangam had swept and strung with jasmine that afternoon, on the sheets Rangam had spread with her own two hands.

She let her mouth curve. Nobody could see it. She let it stay anyway.

Nineteen years she had listened to that voice. The bawl of a colicky infant at two in the morning. The wail over a scbangd knee in the courtyard. The whine over homework. The flat dead nothing of it after the hospital, when the girl lay with a drip in her arm and would not answer to her own name.

This was not that. This was the other end of it. This was a voice that had found what it wanted and was making the noise a woman makes.

“Rangam.” Moorthy’s voice came out of the dark, thin and dry. He did not turn his head. “Rangam, that is enough now.”

“Enough of what,” she said.

“Say something to them.”

“What should I say?” She kept her voice low. Not out of shame. There was a wall between them and the next room and she did not intend to shout through it. “Should I knock? Should I go in and tell my son-in-law to be quicker about it so my husband can sleep?”

“Rangam... ”

“He is being careful with her.” She listened. Another sound through the plaster, smaller, and under it the low murmur of a man’s voice, steady, saying something she could not make out and did not need to. “Listen to him. He is talking to her the whole time. He has not stopped talking to her once.”

“I do not want to listen to him.”

“Then don’t.” She patted his arm twice, the way she patted the pressure cooker lid to settle it. “Nobody is asking you to enjoy it.”

The bed frame in the next room made a sound. Not violent. A shift of weight. Then her daughter’s breath, quick, four or five short pulls in a row, and then the whimper again, rising in the middle.

Rangam closed her eyes and listened to the rest of it come apart.

Inside the first-night room he had stopped being careful about the pace and started being deliberate about it, which was a different thing entirely.

He pulled almost all the way out. Slow. He felt the drag of her all the way along him, every inch of the grip she did not know how to give or stop giving, and he held with only the head inside her.

“Yazhini.”

“Mm... ”

“Look at me.”

Her eyes came open. Wet at the corners. Kohl smeared into the crease.

“You feel that? Where I am now?”

She nodded. Her chin knocked against his.

“That is where you stopped last time.” He pushed. One long stroke, unhurried, all the way down until the veshti cloth crushed flat between their bellies and the waist chain bit into his stomach. “This is where you are now.”

The sound she made was not the whimper.

It came out of her chest and not her throat. Low, thick in the middle, and it broke off at the end into a shape that was almost a word and was not one. It came again when he drew back, a rising note this time, hungrier, and her hips came up off the petals to follow him.

“There it is,” he said.

“What... ” Her breath tore. “What is... ”

“Don’t ask. Keep making it.”

He set the rhythm then. Long strokes, the full length of him each time, nothing hurried in it at all, and his voice went low and continuous against her ear ...  take it, ma, that’s it, all of it, breathe, good girl, breathe ...  and her body found the count of him without being told. She met the third stroke. She met the fourth.

The fifth one she moaned all the way through. Open-mouthed. No hand near her face to catch it.

“Oh... ” she said. “Oh. Oh.”

Three of them. Rising. Each one shorter and higher than the last, the sound of somebody discovering the floor of a room she had been standing in blind.

“Say it.”

“I don’t... I don’t know what... ”

“Say what you feel.”

“Good.” Her nails went into his shoulder. “It’s good. Uncle. It’s good, it’s... ”

Her heels crossed behind his back. She did that herself. He had not put them there.

He pushed her knee wide with one hand and went in at the new angle and she cried out ...  a real cry, fulland long and nothing held back, jasmine crushing under her shoulders.

Rangam heard it come through the wall and lay very still with her eyes open in the dark.

That one was new. She had never heard that one out of her daughter. Not once in nineteen years, not from a fall, not from a fever, not from anything. It came up through the plaster and filled the space above their bed and she felt it in her chest the way she felt the temple drum during the procession.

Then another. Then two together, running into each other, and under them the flat rhythmic knock of the bed frame against the wall.

The tendon in Moorthy’s arm went hard again under her palm.

“Rangam.”

“Mm.”

“This is not right.”

“Which part.”

“You know which part.” His voice came out of the dark thin as a thread. He had not moved his head. He had not moved anything. “In my house. In the room next to my own room.”

“It is her room.”

“She is my daughter.”

“She is his wife.” Rangam listened. The rhythm on the other side of the wall had not changed. Steady. A man who was not in a hurry and had no reason to be. “Since eleven o’clock this morning. You stood there. You gave the water in her palm and poured it into his. I watched you do it.”

The bed frame knocked. Yazhini’s voice climbed and broke and climbed again.

Moorthy’s breath came out through his nose. “Somebody should say something.”

“Go on then.”

He said nothing.

“Go.” She lifted her hand off his arm and gave the mattress a little push, as if to help him up. “Get up. Put on your shirt, the good one, you like to be dressed for these things. Walk four steps to that door and knock on it. He will open it. He is a well-mannered man, he will open the door for his father-in-law even tonight.”

“Rangam.”

“And then you can tell him.” She let it sit one beat. Two. “Selvam. My old friend. Forty years I have known you, we sat on the same bench in the third standard, I ate from your lunch tin. Kindly stop fucking your own wife on your first night. My sleep is disturbed.”

The silence that came off him was thick enough to touch.

“Shall I write it down for you,” she said. “So you don’t forget the words.”

“Chi.”

“Chi what? It is yourhouse too. You put the down payment on this room with your own bonus money. Enjoy what you paid for.”

Moorthy turned onto his side. Away from her. The mattress dipped and rolled her toward him an inch before it settled.

“You dressed her in a half-saree,” he said into the pillow.

“I did.”

“Why.”

Rangam thought about the answer for longer than she needed to. She could have given him the short one. She gave him the true one instead, because it was two in the morning and the wall was thin and there was nothing left to protect.

“Because she is nineteen,” she said. “Because he is forty-eight. Because he was going to know both those things the moment she walked in, and I would rather he knew them from the cloth than found them out on the bed and lost his nerve halfway.”

The frame knocked. Her daughter’s voice went up and thinned out and did not come all the way down.

“A man who is careful is a man who is thinking,” Rangam said. “I wanted him thinking.”

“You wanted him... ” Moorthy’s voice cut off. He breathed twice. “Say the rest of it.”

“I wanted him to want her.”

“Rangam.”

“You would rather he didn’t?” She let that hang. “Then what did we do this morning. Then what were the three knots for. You want a son-in-law who ties the thali at eleven and turns his back at eleven-thirty and she lies there all night with her eyes open wondering what is wrong with her face.”

He said nothing.

“I know that room,” Rangam said. “I have lain in that room.”

The bed frame stopped.

Both of them heard it stop. Rangam felt Moorthy go still beside her ...  his whole body, all at once, the held stillness of a man waiting for the next thing.

It was not silence. There was breathing through the wall. Two people. Fast, then slower. A murmur under it, low, one continuous line of a man’s voice.

“Finished,” Moorthy said. Almost a prayer.

“No,” Rangam said.

The frame started again.

Moorthy made a sound into the pillow that Rangam did not comment on. She turned her face to the wall and put her palm flat on it, the plaster cool under her hand, and she listened to her daughter learn something that could not be taught in any other room in the world.

Then she took her hand offthe wall and lay still and let it come.

“Ohh, Yazhini.” Selvam’s voice, through the plaster, plain as if he stood at the foot of her bed. A grunt under it. Deep. Pulled out of a man’s chest and not decided on. “Your pussy is so tight.”

Rangam’s hand came off the plaster fast.

“That’s it. Squeeze me like that. Yes. Just like that, Yazhini.”

Another grunt. Longer. Wet sounds under it, unmistakable, the specific slap of two bodies that had stopped being polite with each other, and her daughter’s voice threading up through it in short broken pieces.

“So wet. You’re dripping all over me. Feel that? That’s you.”

Rangam put her palm over her own face. The heat came up under it, both cheeks, her ears, the back of her neck. Forty-two years old and lying in the dark with her hand over her face like a girl at the cinema.

“Oh God,” she said into her palm.

“What.” Moorthy’s voice, sharp, turning over. The mattress rolled. “What did he say?”

“Nothing.”

“He said something. I heard him say something.”

“He didn’t say anything.” She kept the hand where it was. “Go to sleep.”

“Rangam. I heard him.”

“Then you heard it. Why are you asking me.”

“I didn’t hear the words.” His voice came closer. He had turned all the way toward her. “What did he say about her?”

“Nothing about her.”

“You are lying.”

Through the wall, as if the man had been waiting for his cue: “Your pussy is perfect, Yazhini. You feel so tight around my cock. You’re taking all of me now. All of it. Say it.”

And her daughter’s voice, thin and wrecked and not remotely ashamed: “All of it.”

Rangam giggled.

It got out of her before she could shut it. High, quick, three sounds, into the flat of her hand, and she pressed harder to stop the rest and it came anyway, her shoulders going with it, the mattress shaking under both of them.

“You are laughing,” Moorthy said.

“I am not.”

“You are laughing in my bed.”

“Chi. Sleep.”

“What did he say?”

“Sleep, I said.”

The rhythm through the wall changed. Rangam heard it change ...  faster now, the knock of the frame coming quicker and harder, and under it the slap, flat and wet and regular, skin on skin, loud enough that there was no pretending it was anything else.

Her daughter’s voice went up and did not come down.

“That’s it. Take it. Take it, Yazhini... ”

“Ah...  ah...  ah... ”

“Look at me while I do it.”

“Amma!”

The word came through the plaster like something thrown.

Moorthy came up off the mattress so fast the sheet tore out from under Rangam’s hip.

“She’s calling you.” He was already swinging his legs down. His hand found her wrist in the dark and gripped it, hard, the way he gripped a bus rail. “Rangam. She’s calling for you. Get up. Go.”

“Sit down.”

“She’s calling her mother... ”

“Krishnamoorthy.” Rangam got hold of his forearm with both hands and pulled him back down, and he came, because he had no weight in him at all. “Sit. Down.”

“Did you not hear it?”

“I heard it better than you did.”

“Amma, she said... ”

“Yes.” Rangam listened. It came again from the other side of the wall, twice in a row, breathless, climbing ...  Amma, Amma ...  and under it the slap did not slow for one second and neither did the man’s voice, low, unhurried, saying something to her the whole time. “She is not calling me. She has not been calling me since she was fourteen years old and I bandaged her toe.”

“Then who... ”

“Nobody.” She heard her own voice come out with the laugh still sitting in it and she did not bother to hide it. “It is not a name, you fool. It is a sound.”

Moorthy’s arm was rigid under her hands.

“Amma is what comes out of a woman when the pleasure is more than she can hold,” Rangam said. “It is what the mouth reaches for when the head has stopped working. Every woman in this state does it. Every single one. Ask any woman in this street tomorrow morning and watch her face when you ask.”

“Rangam... ”

“Did you never... ” She stopped. She thought about it. She said it anyway, because the wall was thin and the hour was late and there was nothing left. “Twenty years, Moorthy. In this bed. You never once heard it from me?”

He said nothing.

“No,” she said. “You wouldn’t have.”

Through the wall the slap came faster and Yazhini’s voice broke into pieces so small they ran together, and there was a stretch of maybe five seconds where she made one continuous sound, thin and high and shaking, and then a man’s grunt under it, deep, satisfied, and her daughter said Amma again, three times, and then something that was not a word at all.

Rangam felt her own face go hot again and let it.

“Listen to it properly,” she said. “Not as her father. Just listen. Is that a girl who is being hurt?”

“How would I know the difference?”

“Because a girl who is being pleasured makes exactly that noise,” Rangam said.

She kept her hand on his arm. The pulse was going in it, quick and shallow under her fingers, the way it went when he climbed the stairs too fast.

“That sound has to be pulled out of a woman. It does not happen on its own. Somebody has to work for it.” She listened. Another one came through the plaster, higher, cut in half by her daughter’s own breath. “A man has to be paying attention. He has to be watching her face and changing what he does, and he has to keep doing it long past the point where he could have finished and turned over. That is what you are hearing. That is what work sounds like.”

“Rangam.”

“He has been in that room since half past eleven.” She did not take her hand away. “It is nearly two. You count it.”

Moorthy’s arm did not soften.

“Your friend,” she said. “Your friend from the third standard. He is forty-eight years old and he is still going, and he has your daughter making a sound she did not know her own throat could make.” She let the next one come and go before she said the rest. “You should be glad it was him. Some other man her age would have been finished in four minutes and she would have lain there in the dark wondering what all the fuss in the songs was about.”

“Do not say that.”

“Why not? It is the good news.” She patted the arm twice. “You have married her to a man who is prepared to sweat for it.”

The frame knocked. Faster. The slap under it did not break its rhythm once, flat and wet, and her daughter’s voice came apart into something that had no shape at all.

Moorthy lay back down. Slowly. The mattress took his weight in stages.

“I cannot hear this,” he said.

“You can hear it.” Rangam turned her face to the wall again. “You have been hearing it for two hours and you have not once put a pillow over your head.”

He said nothing.

“Good night, Moorthy.”

She heard him swallow. She heard the sheet drag as he pulled it up over his shoulder, all the way to the ear, and she heard, a minute later, that he had not stopped breathing through his nose.

Rangam closed her eyes.

Through the wall, a man’s voice, low and steady and entirely unhurried, said her daughter’s name again, and her daughter answered it.

“Yazhini.”

“Mm... yes... ”

“Tell me.”

Something was gathering in her. She felt it low, behind the place where he was, a pressure that had been building for so long she had stopped noticing it climb, and now it was too big to sit still inside.

“It’s... ” Her voice came out wrong. Too high. “Something’s happening.”

“I know.”

“No, it’s... ” His next stroke went all the way down and the pressure jumped. “Oh God. Oh God, it’s coming up.”

“Let it.”

“I don’t know what it is.”

“You do.”

She dug both heels into his back. Her hands were shaking on his shoulders and she could not make them stop shaking. The pressure kept coming up, coming up, from somewhere under her navel where the chain sat, spreading out into her thighs, into the soles of her feet.

“Uncle... Sel… Uncle, I think... ”

“Say it.”

“It’s here. It’s here, it’s here, it’s... ”.

Yazhini began to orgasm.

It went through her like something snapping. Her back came off the petals. She heard herself scream and did not recognize the pitch of it, and she could not stop it, and she did not want to. Her whole pussy clamped down around him and let go and clamped again, in waves, hard, faster than her own heartbeat.

“Oh... it’s squeezing you... ” She got the words out in pieces. “Can you feel it? Uncle, can you feel it squeezing you... ”

“I feel it.”

“It won’t stop... ” Another wave took her. She arched into it. “It won’t stop, it keeps... oh God, oh God, keep going, don’t take it out, don’t you dare take it out... ”

He did not take it out. He kept going straight through the middle of it, the same long strokes, and every one of them made the waves come harder.

“That’s it,” he said. Low. Right against her ear. “All of it. Give me all of it.”

“It’s yours... ” She was crying and laughing at the same time and she could not tell which one her face was doing. “It’s yours, everything’s yours, my pussy is yours, don’t stop, please, please, fuck me, keep fucking me... ”

“Yazhini.”

“I mean it.” Her nails went in. “I don’t care. Fuck me till I can’t walk. Fill me up. I want it, I want all of it inside me, I’m your wife, I’m your wife... ”

Her voice gave out in the middle of the last one and she made a sound instead, long, shaking, that ran out of air and started again on nothing.

In the next room Rangam had her palm over her mouth and her shoulders were going and she could not get them to stop.

“Don’t,” she said into her hand. “Don’t. Oh, this girl. This shameless girl.”

“What is she saying?” Moorthy’s voice was flat in the dark.

“Nothing.”

“She is saying words. I heard words.”

“She is not saying anything her mother needs to repeat.” Rangam pressed the laugh down and it came up her nose instead, a snort, and she turned her face into the pillow and let it out there. “God forgive her. Where did she learn that mouth?”

“Rangam.”

“Not from me.” She wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist. “Not from me, I promise you that.”

The sound came through the wall again, thinner now, spent, trailing down into breathing.

Rangam lay back. Her chest ached from holding the laugh in and she let herself feel it and did not mind.

“She finished,” she said.

Moorthy did not answer.

“Two hours,” she said. “Two hours and he has not finished once, and she has. Do you understand what that means?”

He was quiet a long time. The frame in the next room had slowed to nothing. There was only the murmur now, the man’s voice going on and on, and under it her daughter breathing and saying something small over and over that Rangam could not make out and did not need to.

Moorthy turned his head on the pillow.

“It means he was not doing it for himself,” he said.

“No.”

He looked at the ceiling. The fan turned. Rangam watched the side of his face in the dark and saw his mouth move ...  not much, just at the corner, the way it moved when a sum came out right and he did not want anyone to catch him being pleased about it.

He smiled.

Then he pulled the sheet up to his chin and closed his eyes and lay there smiling at the ceiling like a man who had had checked a column of figures twice and found no error in it.

Rangam watched him do it and said nothing about it.

She turned onto her side and faced the wall again. The plaster was cool near her cheek. Behind it the murmur had gone so low she could only catch the shape of it ...  a man’s voice, still talking, still going, and her daughter answering in single syllables that had no consonants left in them.

Then the frame started again.

Slow at first. Rangam counted four of them before she believed it.

“Again,” Moorthy said. Not a question. His eyes were still shut. The smile was gone off his mouth but not entirely.

“Again,” Rangam said.

“How... ” He stopped.

“He is forty-eight, and works out and you know how healthy he looks.” She pulled the sheet up over her shoulder. “And he has a nineteen-year-old under him who has just found out what her own body does. If you think he is stopping now you have not been listening.”

Through the wall Yazhini made a sound that was almost a laugh at the start and was not one by the end.

“Turn me over,” her daughter said. Clear. Loud enough to come through plaster. “Please. Turn me over.”

He got a hand under her hip and turned her.

Yazhini went over easy, no weight in her at all, the petals sticking to her back and then peeling off as she came onto her front. His palm spread flat between her shoulder blades and pressed her down. Her cheek hit the sheet. The jasmine was crushed under her mouth and she could taste it, green and sweet, the way the temple smelled at eight in the morning.

He pulled her hips up. Her knees slid wide on the sheet without her deciding to let them.

“Like this?” she said into the mattress.

“Like this.” His hand came off her back. Her spine went cold where it had been. “Are you ready, ma?”

She turned her face to get air. “Yes.”

“Say it properly.”

“I’m ready.” Her own voice sounded far away, hoarse, somebody else’s. “I’m ready, Uncle. Please.”

Then his fingers went under the chain at her waist.

She felt him find it ...  two fingers hooked in under the gold, at the small of her back where the layers gathered, and the whole thing tightened all at once across her belly. The links bit. They dragged, and the whole loop of it slid a quarter inch and stopped, and the sound it made was small and bright and metal, gold sliding over gold, right there under her navel.

“Uncle... ”

“Hold on to something.”

She got two fistfuls of sheet.

He pulled by grabbing her waist chain in one hand and her waist in another.

He pulled her back onto him by the chain and pushed at the same time and the two things met in the middle of her and she stopped having any thoughts at all. Her arms gave. Her chest went flat to the bed. The chain sang once, high, and then again on the next pull, and again, and it kept singing, a little chime coming under every stroke, keeping time with the slap of him against her ass.

“Oh my God,” she said. “Oh my God, the chain, you’re using the chain... ”

“I know what I’m using.”

“Do it again.”

He did it again.

Rangam sat up.

She did not mean to. She was up before she knew she had moved, one hand on the mattress and her ear turned to the plaster, and Moorthy said something behind her that she did not hear.

Because there it was.

Under the slap, under her daughter’s voice, under all of it ...  a small clean ticking. Gold on gold. Nothing else in the world made that noise. Two dozen links riding over each other and pulling short and going slack and pulling short again, over and over, in time.

She had a hand at her own waist before she noticed doing that either.

She knew that sound the way she knew her own footsteps on the stairs. She had heard it from the inside. Twenty-three years ago, on a rubber mat in a fitness room on the other side of this same street, with the morning light coming through a high window and a bird on the sill, and a man of twenty-five who had watched that chain for six weeks before he ever put a finger on it ...

She shut that down.

She shut it down and it did not go, and she pressed her palm flat over the chain she was still wearing under her nightie and it did not go then either.

He had her by it. That was what she was hearing. Not his hands on her hips like any man. He had two fingers hooked under that chain at the base of her spine and he was using it as a rein, pulling the girl back onto himself with it, and the girl was letting him, and the gold was telling the whole room about it.

“Rangam.” Moorthy’s voice. “What.”

“Nothing.”

“You sat up.”

“My back,” she said.

The ticking came faster. Her daughter’s voice broke on top of it and started again in the middle.

Rangam lay back down very slowly and did not take her hand off her own waist.

Twenty-three years. She had tied that chain on the girl herself. Yesterday morning, in front of the mirror, she had counted the layers and settled them in the dip of the navel and thought only that it looked well.

That was a lie and she let herself have it for one second and then took it back.

She had known. Of course she had known. She had put it on the girl low and loose enough for a hand to get under.

“Uncle.” Yazhini could hear herself and could not do anything about herself. “Uncle, it feels… so good…”

She pushed back into him. “Pull it, I want to... ”

He pulled it. The chain went taut and the girl howled.

“Oh fuck. Oh fuck, yes... ” Yazhini’s voice came through the plaster stripped of every soft edge Rangam had spent nineteen years putting into it. “Harder. Harder, fuck me harder, Uncle, please... ”

Rangam’s hand came off her own waist and went to her mouth.

“Ayyo,” she said into it.

“That’s it... ” the girl said. “That’s it, right there, fuck... my pussy... it’s yours, it’s all yours, fuck it, don’t stop, don’t you dare... ”

The slap under it did not miss a beat and the chain kept its little bright time on top and Rangam pressed the flat of her hand harder over her mouth and it was no use at all. The laugh got out through her fingers in a wet snort. Her whole chest shook. She rolled her face into the pillow and it came out there instead, muffled, helpless.

“Rangam.” Moorthy again, from the far edge of the bed, flat. “What is she saying now.”

“I am not repeating it.”

“Rangam.”

“I am not.” She got a breath. Lost it again. “Sleep.”

Through the wall: “Fuck me. Fuck me. Fuck me... ”

Rangam lifted her head off the pillow and turned toward the plaster and did not think about whether it was sensible.

“Yazhiniiii,” she called. Low. Sing-song. The exact pitch she had used across the courtyard for nineteen years when the girl was going too near the well. “Kanna. That mouth.”

The slap on the other side of the wall did not stop. Nothing stopped. But there was a sound in the middle of her daughter’s next breath that had a laugh buried in it somewhere, half strangled, and then a small wrecked voice saying oh God, amma, and then a man’s low murmur under it that Rangam could not make out and was not meant to.

“Rangam.” Moorthy had come up onto his elbow. She could feel the mattress tilt. “Did you just... ”

“Yes.”

“Through the wall.”

“Yes.”

“On her first night.”

“Somebody has to.” She lay back down and pulled the sheet up and her voice would not come out level, it kept tripping. “Did you hear the language, Moorthy? Where did she learn it? Not from this house. Nineteen years I fed that girl with my own hand and she is in there talking like a lorry driver at the Koyambedu junction.”

“You are laughing.”

“I am.”

“You just... ” His voice went somewhere between outrage and something else and did not land. “You scolded her while she is... while he is... ”

“I scolded her mouth. Not the rest of it.” She wiped her eye with the heel of her hand. “The rest of it is between the two of them and she is welcome to it.”

Through the plaster the girl started again, thinner now, hoarse, and it was the same words. Fuck me. Please. Uncle. My pussy. All of it, take all of it. And under them, unhurried, the low steady line of a man’s voice saying her name the way he had been saying it since half past eleven.

Rangam turned onto her side and faced the wall and let her mouth stay curved where nobody could see it.

“She has no shame at all,” she said. “None. Not one paisa’s worth.”

“No,” Moorthy said.

The mattress dipped as he lay down again. She heard the sheet drag up over his shoulder. She heard him breathe out through his nose, long, and not once did he say the thing he had been saying all night about a father and what a father should have to hear.

“Good,” Rangam said, to the wall. “Let her have none.”

The chain ticked on. Gold over gold, quick and bright, keeping time with a man who was still working for it at two in the morning, and Rangam lay with her palm flat over her own chain under the nightie and listened to her daughter’s voice go completely, entirely to pieces.

The chain went slack. His fingers came out from under it and she felt the loop settle back into the dip of her navel, warm where his knuckles had been, and then his hands were under her arms and she was going up.

“Uncle... ”

“Come here.”

Her knees left the sheet. Petals fell off her back. He carried her three steps with her legs already climbing him, and then her shoulder blades hit the wall and the plaster was cold, cold all the way down her spine, and she gasped at that more than anything.

“Cold,” she said.

“You’ll warm it.”

He got a forearm under her thighs and hitched her higher. Her heels crossed behind his back on their own. The veshti was still knotted at his waist and she felt the wet silk of it against the inside of her knee, and then she felt him line up under her, the head pushing in where she was already slick and open and too sensitive to be sensible about it.

He pushed her down onto him with her own weight.

She had no leverage at all. That was the thing she had not understood about it ...  nothing to brace against, nothing to push back with, only the wall behind her and his hands under her and gravity doing what he told it to. He came all the way up into her in one go and her head went back and knocked the plaster.

The knock came back at her. Through the bone behind her ear. Hollow.
