Chapter -21 
The silence 
For the next few days, nothing happened.
And somehow, that made Mohan more nervous.
Rajan didn’t call.
He didn’t send another message.
There was no unexpected visit, no anonymous photograph, nothing in the apartment group.
Mohan kept checking his phone anyway.
At home, Padma behaved almost exactly as she always had.
She cooked, watched television, spoke to her parents and asked Mohan about his work.
But Mohan noticed one small change.
Whenever her phone received a message, she would look at it quickly and put it face down.
He tried not to watch.
He failed.
One evening, while they were having tea, Padma suddenly asked:
“Do you think people can change?”
Mohan looked at her.
“What kind of change?”
“I don’t know.”
She stared at her cup.
“Sometimes a person thinks they know themselves… and then something happens and they realize they don’t.”
Mohan felt his heartbeat increase.
“Why are you asking me this?”
Padma immediately smiled.
“Nothing. Just something I was thinking about.”
She changed the subject.
Mohan said nothing.
That night, Padma went to bed early.
Mohan stayed in the office room.
He opened the monitoring application.
There was nothing unusual.
Then, around midnight, a notification appeared.
One new message.
Mohan’s hands became cold.
It wasn’t from Rajan.
It was from Padma.
She had sent a message to an unsaved number.
Mohan opened it.
There was only one sentence:
“Please don’t contact me again.”
Mohan stared at it.
For several seconds, he felt relieved.
Then he noticed the number.
He recognized it.
Rajan.
A reply appeared almost immediately.
“If that’s truly what you want, I will.”
Mohan waited.
Padma didn’t respond.
Five minutes passed.
Ten minutes.
Then another message appeared from Rajan.
“But before you decide, you should know something about your husband.”
Mohan’s expression changed.
He immediately stood up.
The message remained on the screen.
A second message arrived.
“Ask him what he has been doing all these months.”
Mohan stopped breathing for a moment.
Because for the first time, Rajan wasn’t trying to manipulate Padma through attraction.
He was threatening to expose Mohan himself.
And suddenly Mohan understood something he hadn’t considered before.
Rajan didn’t need Padma to trust him.
He only needed Padma to stop trusting her husband.
