My mother and the landlord (Slow burn, long read)
Chapter 18 – Part 5

25 November 2025 – Tuesday Night

The door closed behind us with a soft click. The smell of gunpowder still clung to my fingers and the front of my shirt. Ma dropped the empty cracker packets near the almirah and went straight to the kitchen corner. She poured water, drank two full glasses without pause, and kept the second glass pressed to her forehead for a moment before setting it down.

“My throat is dry from the smoke,” she said. “Yours must be the same. Drink something.”

I did not move immediately. The image of the way she had looked at Azad Sahab in the compound was still clear — the small softening of her face, the private current that had passed between them while the colour bomb climbed into the air, the casual ownership in his voice when he said the payal was not going anywhere. She had stood in the open lane of our building and received that look without flinching.

She turned from the sink and studied my face.

“You are still carrying the same expression from downstairs. Sit. I am not going to have another argument tonight.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You don’t have to. Your face says it.” She wiped her hands on the end of her kameez and walked to the almirah. “I am going to try the payal properly. I only held it this morning. I want to see how it sits when I walk.”

She opened the upper shelf, took down the flatter red box, and brought it to the bed. The gold ribbon was already loose from the morning. She lifted the lid, removed both silver payal, and sat on the edge of the mattress. The links made a soft, clean sound as she held them.

“Come here,” she said. “Help me with the clasp. It is small.”

I sat on the chair opposite her. She raised her right foot and rested it on the edge of the bed near her other knee. The sole was still clean from the bathroom earlier. The peach nail polish on her toes caught the tube light. She placed the first payal around her ankle and tried to close the tiny clasp with one hand. Her fingers were not steady enough.

“Sunny, hold it in place please,” she said.

I leaned forward and kept the two ends of the chain together while she worked the clasp. My thumb brushed the soft skin just above her ankle bone. The contact was brief and practical, yet the heat that moved up my arm was not practical at all. I kept my eyes on the silver so I would not have to look at the rest of her.

The clasp finally caught. She lowered that foot and raised the other. We repeated the process. When both payal were on she stood up and took three slow steps across the small room. The silver made a delicate, rhythmic sound against itself — soft chimes that filled the quiet flat.

She walked to the window, turned, walked back to the bed, then to the kitchen corner and back again. Each step produced the same light metallic music. She stopped in the middle of the room and looked down at her own feet.

“How does it look?”

“It looks expensive.”

“That is not what I asked. Does it look all right on me? Or does it look like too much?”

I forced myself to look properly. The solid silver links sat cleanly against her wheatish skin. The small white stones caught the light every time she shifted her weight. The leaf-shaped pendants rested against the outer curve of each ankle. On her the payal did not look delicate or girlish. They looked deliberate.

“They look nice on you Ma” I said.

She gave a small, satisfied nod, as if that was the answer she had wanted.

“I think so too. They are heavier than the usual ones. You can feel them when you walk. Not in a bad way.” She took another few steps, listening to the sound. “Should I keep them on? Or put them back in the box for special days only?”

“That is up to you.”

“I am asking you.”

“Keep them on if you want.”

She looked at me for a longer moment, trying to read whether the words were simple or loaded. Then she went back to the almirah and took out the smaller box that held the earlier silver bracelet Azad Sahab had given her weeks ago. She slipped the bracelet onto her right wrist and held both arms out in front of her, comparing the two metals under the tube light.

“Same man,” she said quietly. “Different days. The bracelet was the first thing. These are the second.” She turned her wrist so the bracelet caught the light, then looked down at the payal again. “He chooses carefully. I will say that for him.”

I stayed silent. The private knowledge of the hotel videos — the thick dark cock, her mouth, the later photos on the white sheets — sat behind my eyes and did not move. She still believed I only had suspicions. She stood in the middle of our flat wearing both of his silver gifts and spoke about his careful taste as if the largest truth between us was still only jewellery.

She sat down on the bed again and lifted one foot to adjust a link that had twisted. The kameez shifted high on her thigh. I looked away, then looked back before I could stop myself. The heat returned, sharper this time, mixed with the memory of her bare breast under his hand in the 8:31 photo and the way her face had looked in the second video. Guilt followed at once, heavy and familiar. I stood up and went to the kitchen corner for water I did not need.

“You are very quiet tonight,” she said from the bed. “Quieter than this morning even.”

“I’m tired.”

“You were tired this morning also. This is different.” She paused. “Is it because he came out into the lane? Or is it still the note and the payal?”

“Both.”

“At least you are honest.” She rested her hands on her knees. The bracelet and the payal were both visible. “I am not going to return them. I told you that this morning. I am also not going to pretend I do not like how they look on me. That would be false.”

“I didn’t ask you to return them.”

“No. You only looked at me as if I had brought something dirty into the house.” She exhaled slowly. “It is silver, Sunny. It is a gift from a man who has been good to me. I am allowed to wear it.”

I turned from the sink.

“You are allowed to do whatever you want. You have made that clear several times.”

“Then stop punishing me with silence for doing it.” Her voice remained even, but the edge was present. “I am still your mother. I still cooked your food today. I still sat with you for the last crackers. The silver on my feet does not cancel those things.”

“I know that.”

“Then come and sit. Don’t stand near the kitchen like a guest.”

I came back and sat on the chair. She stayed on the bed, one leg folded under her, the payal visible every time she moved her foot. For a while neither of us spoke. The only sound was the soft occasional chime of the silver when she shifted position.

After a few minutes she spoke again, softer.

“When I walk and hear them I will think of him. That is true. I am not going to lie to you about it. But I will also still be the person who asks if you have eaten and how was your office. Both things can sit in the same body. I need you to start accepting that without looking at me as if I have become someone else.”

I looked at the payal, then at the bracelet, then at her face.

“I am trying.”

“Try harder. The festival is over. Ordinary days are starting again. I do not want every evening to feel like a courtroom.”

She stood up and walked once more across the room, listening to the silver. Then she sat down, removed both payal carefully, and placed them back in the red box. She left the bracelet on her wrist. She closed the lid of the box and returned it to the almirah shelf.

“I will wear them when I want to,” she said, her back still to me. “Not every day. But I will not hide them either.”

She turned and looked at me.

“Go wash your face and hands. The smoke is still on you. Then sleep. You have to start preparing for office again. The holiday is almost finished.”

I went to the bathroom. When I came out she had already changed into the old cotton nighty and switched off the main tube light. Only the small night bulb near the bathroom remained. She was lying on her side of the bed, facing the wall, the silver bracelet still on her wrist.

I lay down on my side. The gap between us on the mattress felt wider than the actual inches. I could hear her breathing, steady but not yet asleep. The faint metallic sound of the bracelet reached me once when she moved her hand under the sheet.

I stared at the dark ceiling. The compound scene replayed — the way she had turned toward him, the private heat that had been visible even in the open air, the casual sentence about the payal not going anywhere. Underneath that sat the hotel videos, the thick veined cock, her mouth, the later photos on the white sheets, the selfie with his hand on her breast. Underneath that sat the guilt of my own body responding to her in the afternoon while she slept, and again when my thumb had touched her ankle while fastening the clasp.

She believed the largest problem was still my difficulty accepting the gifts and the man who gave them. She did not know I had seen the full record of what that man did to her between 8:17 and 10:41 the previous night. The gap in knowledge sat in the dark room with us, heavier than the silver she had just put away.

Outside, a late scooter passed in the lane. Somewhere in the building a door closed. Ma’s breathing gradually slowed into sleep. The bracelet made one last soft sound and then went quiet.

I remained awake long after that, eyes open in the dark, the restless weight of everything I knew and everything she still thought I only guessed pressing down on the same narrow mattress.
