My mother and the landlord (Slow burn, long read)

Chapter 14 Continued

After a few minutes she spoke without looking up.

“You were very quiet at the table.”

“There was not much for me to say.”

“He was polite to you.”

“He was polite the way a man is polite when he has already decided his place.”

She stopped arranging the lights and looked at me.

“And what place is that, according to you?”

“You know what place.”

She held my gaze for a long moment. Then she sighed, a small, tired sound, and sat on the edge of the bed.

“Sunny. Today I wanted one ordinary shopping day with my son. He came because he wanted to see me. I did not stop him. I will not stop him. He was respectful. He paid the bill. He dropped us home. None of these things are crimes. You are turning them into weight again.”

“He told me not to make your face heavy.”

Her eyebrows rose slightly.

“He said that?”

“Yes. When you went to the washroom.”

She was quiet for a few seconds. Then she nodded slowly, as if filing the information away.

“He notices more than he says. That is his way. I will speak to him if needed. But you also need to understand something. When a man takes responsibility for certain practical things in a woman’s life, he also begins to feel some right over the atmosphere of that life. It is not always spoken. It simply appears. You felt it today. I am not going to pretend it is not there.”

She stood up, came closer, and put one hand on my shoulder.

“I am still your mother. That has not changed. I need you to start absorbing it without making every evening a courtroom.”

Her hand stayed on my shoulder for a moment longer, warm and familiar. Then she removed it and went back to the shopping bags.

Night settled slowly over the small flat. She made dinner. We ate it mostly in silence. Later she hung the fairy lights along the window grill while I held the chair steady for her. When she stretched to fix the highest point, the kameez lifted and the soft curve of her waist became visible above the salwar. She climbed down, switched the lights on, and stood back to check the effect.

“They look nice,” she said.

“Yes.”

She turned to me. The blue-white lights from the grill fell across her face and the open neck of her kameez.

“Tomorrow we will clean the temple corner properly.”

I nodded.

She switched off the main tube light a little later. The fairy lights remained on, casting small moving patterns across the walls of the 10-by-12 room. I lay on my side and listened to her breathing settle into sleep.

The shopping bags sat in the corner.

The new bike stood in the lane below.

And the memory of the man who had sat across the table, flirty with my mother and quietly corrective with me, remained in the room long after the restaurant had closed.
