Chapter 6 – The New Arrangement

8 October 2025 – Wednesday

I didn’t go straight home after office. Two of the juniors from my team were going to a small café near Andheri station for coffee and I tagged along. It felt strange at first, sitting with people closer to my age, talking about code and managers and weekend plans, as I am not much of a social person, but after an hour the strangeness faded. We left around eight-fifteen. By the time I climbed the three floors of our building it was almost nine.

The flat was dark. Only the small night bulb near the bathroom was on.

I switched on the tube light. The house looked exactly as I had left it in the morning: the double bed pushed against the wall, the folding table with my laptop charger still plugged in, the steel almirah, the thin curtain that barely separated the bathroom door from the rest of the space. The tiny 8-by-8 kitchen corner was clean. No vessels left in the sink. No note on the table.

I called her.

She picked up on the fourth ring. There was low music and the sound of people talking in the background.

“Sunny?”

“Where are you?”

“I’m at a colleague’s place. Old parlour friend. She called in the afternoon, said some of the girls are meeting. I’m having dinner here. I’ll come late. Don’t wait.”

Her voice was relaxed, almost cheerful.

“How late?”

“I’ll see. Maybe eleven-twelve. Or if it gets too late I’ll stay the night. Her house is nearby. No point coming in an auto at midnight.”

I stood in the middle of the small room holding the phone.

“You’re staying the night?”

“Only if it gets late. Why are you sounding like that? I’m not a teenager.”

There was a woman’s laughter behind her. Ma said something away from the phone, then came back.

“There’s food in the fridge. Heat it. And sleep. I’ll message.”

She cut the call.

I heated the leftover rice and dal and ate standing near the folding table. The flat felt larger without her presence filling it. After eating I sat on the bed and tried to watch something on my laptop. Every few minutes I looked at the door.

At twelve-forty a message came:

*Staying the night. Don’t worry. See you tomorrow.*

I locked the phone and lay down on my side of the bed. Her pillow still smelled faintly of the lotion she used. I stared at the ceiling until the tube light started hurting my eyes, then switched it off.

Sleep came late and broken.

9 October 2025 – Thursday

She came home at nine-forty in the morning.

I was already dressed for office when the key turned. She walked in. Her hair was tied loosely. There was a lightness in her step and a faint flush still on her cheeks. She looked rested in a way she never looked after a normal night at home.

“You’re still here?” she said, smiling. “I thought you would have left.”

“Yes, late today.”

She dropped her small handbag on the bed and stretched both arms above her head. The kurti lifted and I saw the soft curve of her waist, the way her jeans sat low on the full flare of her hips. Her stomach was smooth. The cloth of the kurti pulled tight across her heavy breasts for a second before she lowered her arms.

“I’m going to bathe and sleep for a while,” she said. “I slept late talking.”

She went into the bathroom. The door didn’t close fully — it never did, the latch was weak. I heard the water start. Through the gap in the thin curtain I caught a brief glimpse of her. She was wearing a beige colored bra, the cups full and strained by the weight they carried. The band looked like it sat on a firm 38 size breast. She unhooked it with one hand and the heavy soft flesh spilled forward before she stepped under the water.

I turned away and picked up my bag.

When I came back in the evening she was awake and dressed in an old cotton saree — cream with a thin maroon border. She rarely wore sarees. The last time I remembered was a distant relative’s function two years ago. Today the saree was pinned neatly, but the blouse was newer, a deep maroon with a slightly lower neck and sleeves that ended mid-upper arm. The cloth of the saree clung to the roundness of her hips and the soft shelf of her stomach when she moved.

She was standing near the kitchen counter making tea.

“You wore a saree today?” I asked.

“Felt like it. The weather is nicer these days.” She handed me the cup. “How was office?”

“Okay.”

We sat on opposite sides of the folding table. The saree pallu kept slipping off her shoulder. Each time she pulled it back the blouse shifted and the upper curve of her breasts became visible for a moment.

After a while she said, “Azad ji came in the afternoon. He lowered the rent for this month.”

I looked up. “Lowered how?”

“I don’t know the details. He just said we don’t have to pay the full twelve thousand this month. Maybe eight or nine. He will tell exactly later.”

She spoke as if it was a small, ordinary favour.

“Why would he do that?”

Ma shrugged and sipped her tea. “He is the landlord. Sometimes they adjust. He said you are young and just started working, no need to stretch.”

The way she repeated his words made something tighten in my chest.

“You didn’t ask him to do it?”

“I didn’t ask for anything. He offered.” She looked at me over the cup. “You’re still so young, Sunny. You don’t understand how these things work in buildings. People help each other.”

The sentence was gentle. It still landed like a quiet correction.
