Adultery Dad's Enemy Made My Mom Heartless (COMPLETED!!)
#99
Then on a sunny Wednesday my phone screamed in my hand.

It wasn’t Rohan. It was her. My mother’s voice was a ragged, shattered thing, torn apart by sobs that hitched into screams. “He’s dead! He’s dead!”

For a disorienting second, the world tilted. “Who?” I asked, my voice flat, a dull blade against her hysteria.

“AAKASH!” she wailed, the name a guttural shriek of pure agony. “My Aakash is gone!”

A cold stillness settled over me, a quiet at the center of her storm. “What happened?”

“A car accident… oh god… they said… two dumpers… he was trapped…” Her words were gulped between wrenching sobs. “They said… his head… they said it was instant…” The image bloomed, unbidden and horrifically vivid: metal concertinaed, glass like diamond dust, and the man who had been a monolith in my life, reduced to a headless corpse between two massive trucks. A brutal, almost symbolic end.

Then came the plea, the expected script. “You have to come home. Beta, please, come home now. I need you.”

The script demanded a son’s comfort. I felt nothing but a vast, echoing hollow. “I’ll call you back in five minutes,” I said, my tone disturbingly calm.

“What? No! Listen to me—!” Her confusion was a distant buzz.

I hung up.

Silence. The sterile air of my company hostel room pressed in. I stood there, phone limp in my hand, and let the information process. Decapitated. Dead on scene. Aakash. The words circled like vultures. There was no initial surge of joy, no triumphant shout. Just a profound, settling finality. The main character of my nightmare had abruptly exited the stage, leaving behind a chaotic, unresolved third act.

Five minutes later, precisely, I called back.

She answered instantly, her breathing still ragged. “You’re cutting my call, at this time!!! ?”

“ I have an important meeting. I can’t come.”

There was a stunned silence on the line, broken only by her wet, shaky inhalations. Then, disbelief. “You… what? Are you mad? Your stepdad is dead! What are you talking about?!” The hysteria was curdling into anger, directed at the one person she thought was bound by duty.

That word. Stepdad. It was the spark thrown into the cavern of dry tinder inside me.

My own anger, cold and sharp and held in reserve for years, finally found its target. “He would have NEVER taken my father’s place, you stupid whore!” The venom shocked even me. “You cunt! You destroyed our family! You tore everything apart for him! And I am so GLAD that motherfucker is dead! I’m glad he died in the most brutal way possible! Now you deal with it. Deal with all your problems yourself.”

I hung up again. This time, I didn't just end the call. I navigated to her contact and blocked the number. The action felt surgical. Decisive.

Next, I called Rohan’s college boarding house. When he came on the line, his voice young and tense, I relayed the news without preamble. “Aakash is dead. Car accident. It’s over.” I heard his sharp intake of breath. “Listen carefully. Do not go home if she comes to take you. Stay at the hostel. Understand?”

“Okay, Bhaiya,” he said, the trust in his voice absolute. He was my brother again, not hers.
