Chapter II.
The Accidental Glimpse

They left early Saturday morning. Within ten minutes both children were arguing about the window seat.
“I’ll sit by the window,” Krishiv declared.
“No, I’ll sit.”
“Arre, don’t start.”
“He started.”
“No, you started.”
Shruti offered to sit in the middle. Peace lasted almost seven minutes. Eventually exhaustion defeated both boys. The car grew quiet. Kartik glanced into the rear-view mirror. Shruti was looking outside. At that exact moment she turned. Their eyes met a second longer than they should have. She looked away first.
They reached the hotel in the early afternoon—a modest family-friendly property on the edge of a small hilly town. Shruti and Hridaan took one room. Kartik, Prerna and Krishiv took the one two doors down.
The moment their door closed, Krishiv launched himself onto the bed. Prerna frowned. “My phone is left in the car.”
Kartik was already pulling his shirt off. “Take the keys.”
“I’ll come too!” Krishiv scrambled off the bed.
“Take him. I’m going straight into the shower. I’m tired from the drive.”
She kissed his cheek. “Come back quickly.”
“Haan.”
In the room two doors away, Hridaan announced he was starving. Nothing in the snacks satisfied him.
“Okay. I’m going down to check the café. You stay here, watch TV. Don’t open the door.”
Since she was going downstairs anyway, she might as well ask if Krishiv wanted anything. She knocked once. No answer. Knocked harder.
“Prerna?”
The door was slightly open. She pushed it.
“Prerna?”
Empty. Then the bathroom latch clicked. Kartik stepped out completely naked. Water still beaded on his shoulders and chest. His cock hung heavy between his thighs—thick even soft.
For a second neither moved. He swore and grabbed a towel, wrapping it quickly around his waist. His face had gone slightly red.
“Shit— Shruti—”
“I knocked twice— I thought Prerna—”
“She’s not here. She and Krishiv went down to the car. She forgot her phone.”
“Oh.” Her cheeks burned. She kept her gaze near his shoulder. “Hridaan is hungry. I was going to the café. I just wanted to ask if Krishiv wanted anything.”
“Just get whatever. It’s fine.”
“Okay.”
She left, pulling the door shut more carefully than necessary. In the corridor her heart beat hard. She had completely forgotten what snacks Hridaan wanted.
Inside, Kartik remained where he was, towel gripped tightly. It had been an accident. Nothing more. His body, however, seemed to have understood something else entirely.

By the time they left the hotel around four, both had decided to behave normally. The children made that easy—running ahead, arguing over photographs, demanding water. At the sunset point Kartik stood behind Prerna, slipped an arm around her waist. She leaned back against him. Shruti noticed and looked away almost immediately. Something inside her shifted.
Later he moved a strand of hair from Prerna’s face. She swatted his hand. They teased each other with the effortless familiarity of long affection. Shruti watched from a short distance. Their closeness was ordinary. That was what made it difficult.
At the café Kartik stole food from Prerna’s plate. She slapped his hand. He smiled, unrepentant. Shruti lowered her eyes toward her cup. She wasn’t jealous. Not exactly. But a quiet emptiness settled in her chest—a longing she had not allowed herself to name.
Back at the hotel the children disappeared into the play area. Prerna rested her head against Kartik’s shoulder. He adjusted automatically so she was more comfortable. Shruti watched, then looked away. Not because she didn’t want to see it. Because she suddenly wanted something she could not have.

By dinner everyone was exhausted. Once, under the table, Prerna’s hand found Kartik’s. Neither looked down. Shruti noticed. This time she smiled. But the feeling remained.
Nothing unusual had happened between Kartik and Shruti. Only the small awkwardness of the earlier accident. Yet the evening had changed something for her. Watching them had reminded her what she missed—love, comfort, touch, the feeling of belonging to someone. That quiet emptiness was far more difficult to ignore.
And the night was still young.
