Chapter 141: Selvam is on TV

# Scene 1

The ceiling fan turned lazy circles above the Krishnamoorthy living room. Midday heat pressed through the closed windows. Yazhini tucked her bare feet under the sofa cushion and watched her father stare at the television with the particular focus of a man who believed the world’s most important events happened in English and wore suits.

BBC News. A woman in a navy blazer discussed American treasury yields. Krishnamoorthy’s mustache twitched with each percentage point.

“Appa.” Yazhini propped her chin on her palm. “This is the third hour of US economic news. There’s a water crisis two streets over and you’re watching the Federal Reserve.”

Krishnamoorthy didn’t look away from the screen. His cotton shirt strained at the buttons over his midsection. The fan pushed warm air across his balding head.

“What happens in America, ma, happens to the whole world three months later.” His voice boomed with the confidence of a man who had never needed evidence. “The Federal Reserve sneezes, Chennai catches pneumonia. That’s economics.”

“Chennai catches pneumonia because of the drainage, Appa, not the Fed.”

“Smart-mouth.” He tapped her knee affectionately. “Your mother raised you too bold.”

From the kitchen came the soft rhythmic tap of a knife on a cutting board. Krishnamoorthy’s wife working through the afternoon’s curry. The smell of mustard seeds and curry leaves had been building for twenty minutes, threading through the incense smoke from the small altar in the corner.

Yazhini laughed. The sound was light, easy. She’d spent nineteen years learning to tease her father without crossing whatever invisible line turned his affection to irritation. She was good at it.

“I’m just saying. The local news has actual people we know. People who live here. Your friend Dr. Venkatesh was on yesterday talking about the library funding.”

“Venkat talks too much poetry.” Krishnamoorthy waved a hand. “Always with the Sangam references. The man can’t discuss a budget without quoting two-thousand-year-old verse.”

“At least he’s discussing our budget.”

“The American budget is our budget, ma. Indirectly. Through the miracle of globalization.”

Yazhini rolled her eyes and reached for the remote. Krishnamoorthy’s hand shot out and covered it before her fingers arrived.

“Five more minutes. This segment is important.”

“What segment?”

“The technology one. After the markets.”

She sighed and settled back. The sofa cushions were warm where her thighs pressed against them. Outside, a scooter horn blared twice and faded. The fan kept turning. The knife kept tapping.

Then the scream.

Sharp. Sudden. A woman’s voice breaking from the kitchen into a register Yazhini had never heard from her mother. The cutting board hit the counter with a dull clatter.

“It’s Selvam! It’s Selvam!”

Krishnamoorthy’s wife stood in the doorway, one hand clamped over her mouth, knuckles white. Her eyes were wide, fixed on the television. The remote dangled from her other hand, forgotten.

Yazhini turned.

The screen had changed. Clean studio lighting. A pale set with a low modern table. Two chairs. A woman with a British accent and a clipboard. And across from her...

Selvam.

He sat with his shoulders relaxed against the chairback. Dark fitted shirt, open at the collar. No tie. The silver at his temples caught the studio lights. His hands rested on his thighs, fingers loose. He looked like a man who had walked into the studio five minutes early and spent the extra time deciding whether to care about being on television. He had decided not to.

Krishnamoorthy’s mustache stopped twitching. His whole body went still.

“Selvam,” his wife whispered. The name came out again, softer. “Selvam.”

The interviewer leaned forward. Her accent was crisp, educated, the particular English of someone who had been to the right colleges.

“Mr. Chandran, your autonomous vehicle company Vanmmer has transformed freight logistics across three continents. Eighty percent market penetration in North American long-haul. Sixty in Europe. Conventional wisdom says you should be expanding that footprint, not diverting capital into space technology. Why the pivot?”

Selvam’s expression didn’t change. His voice came through the television speakers with the same measured calm Yazhini remembered from his living room, his garden, the well behind the wooden panel where she had once...

She pushed the thought away.

“Conventional wisdom is usually five years behind.” Selvam’s hands stayed still. “The vehicles work where the infrastructure exists. They stop working where it doesn’t. Northern Saskatchewan. Patagonia. Western Australia. Places where the maps are wrong because nobody goes there often enough to update them.”

The interviewer nodded. “And your solution is...”

“Own the infrastructure. All of it.” His jawline tightened once, then released. “Low-Earth-orbit constellation. Dedicated bandwidth. Sub-fifty millisecond latency. Global coverage, including the poles.”

“Which requires...”

“Rockets. Dozens of them. Initially.” A small dry smile touched the corner of his mouth. “Expendable architecture would cost three to five billion in launch fees alone. The math doesn’t work.”

“So you’re building reusable boosters.”

“We’ve already built one. It flew, reentered, and almost landed intact three days ago. We’re rebuilding it now with better control margins.”

Krishnamoorthy’s wife had moved to the arm of the sofa without anyone noticing. Her hand found her husband’s shoulder and gripped. Her eyes hadn’t left the screen.

“Selvam,” she said again. Quiet. Reverent.

The interviewer leaned forward. “Your propulsion architecture is unconventional. Centrifugal forced for launch, fossil fuel for retrieval. Most of the industry is moving toward full electric or methane-based systems. Why buck the trend?”

Selvam’s head tilted a fraction. The studio lights caught the silver.

“Electric gives you clean ascent. It doesn’t give you the thrust density or the rapid throttle response you need for precision landing. Fossil fuels do. The vehicle uses the right tool for each phase of flight. That’s not unconventional. That’s engineering.”

Krishnamoorthy leaned forward. His silk shirt creased across his back. His mustache had begun to quiver... a small, involuntary motion that traveled from the center outward. Pride and disbelief fought across his features in real time, neither winning.

“Our Selvam,” he said. The words came out thick. “On BBC. Explaining rockets to the British.”

His wife’s fingers dug into his shoulder. “He looks like a movie star.”

“He looks like a man who builds things that fly,” Krishnamoorthy corrected. But there was no correction in his voice. Only wonder.

Yazhini said nothing.

The warmth started low. Between her thighs. A slow, spreading heat that climbed through her pelvis and settled there, familiar and unwelcome. Her cotton salwar suddenly felt too tight against the crease of her legs. The fabric pressed. The heat answered.

She remembered the well. The wooden panel. The accidental glimpse through a gap she hadn’t meant to find. Selvam’s body naked in the Chennai sunlight, water beading on his shoulders, his cock thick and veined with that small dark mole near the base. The memory had lived in her body for months. Quiet. Patient. Returning at night when the house went dark.

Now it was back. With his voice filling the living room and his face on the screen and her father’s mustache quivering with pride and her mother whispering his name like a prayer.

Yazhini reached for the remote.

Her fingers found the record button. Pressed. The red light blinked twice. The screen held Selvam’s face... composed, broad-shouldered, the particular stillness of a man who built impossible things and watched them almost land and built them again anyway.

The warmth between her thighs didn’t go away.

It spread.

# Scene 2

The house went dark at eleven. Her father’s snoring carried through the wall by eleven-fifteen. Her mother’s softer breathing followed. Yazhini waited until the digital clock on her nightstand read 12:47 before she slipped out from under the sheet.

Bare feet on cool tile. The hallway stretched dark and quiet. A single night light glowed from the bathroom outlet, casting a weak amber glow across the floor. She moved past her parents’ closed door without breathing.

The living room was dark. The television’s standby light pulsed red in the corner like a slow, patient heartbeat. The ceiling fan had been switched off. The heat lingered, heavy and still, pressing against her skin through the thin cotton of her nightshirt.

She found the remote on the coffee table. Her fingers closed around it. The red light blinked twice when she powered the set on, then the screen brightened to blue menu. She navigated to recorded programs. Scrolled. Found it.

BBC World Business. Fifty-three minutes. Time stamp: 14:22. Afternoon light from another continent frozen in digital memory.

She settled onto the sofa. Pulled the throw blanket from the armrest... thin cotton, pale blue, the one her mother had knitted three winters ago. Wrapped it around her legs, her hips, tucking the edges under her thighs. The fabric was warm from the day’s heat.

Beneath the blanket, her hands moved.

Skirt first. The elastic waistband of her cotton skirt. She hooked her thumbs under the fabric and pushed it down her hips in one smooth motion. The cotton gathered around her knees. Then her underwear... simple white cotton, already damp at the center from the memory that had been living in her body since midday. She slid them down and off, left them tangled somewhere near her ankles beneath the blanket.

Bare from the waist down. The nightshirt covered her to mid-thigh. The blanket covered everything else.

She pressed play.

Selvam’s voice filled the room at low volume. Calm. Deliberate. The particular measured cadence of a man explaining complex things to people who needed to understand them.

“... centrifugal forced gives us the thrust density we need for ascent. The fossil system handles retrieval with the throttle response that electric can’t match.”

The interviewer nodded on screen. Selvam’s hands rested on the table. Strong. Veined. The kind of hands that built things. Held things. Yazhini remembered how they had looked gripping Vanitha’s hips behind the wooden panel. The memory sent a fresh pulse of heat between her legs.

Her right hand slid beneath the blanket.

Found the warm space between her thighs. The skin there was already slick. She parted her labia with two fingers... index and middle... feeling the wet warmth against her fingertips. The hood of her clit was soft, slightly swollen. She pressed the pad of her middle finger directly against it.

Still. Just pressure. Feeling the pulse of blood beneath the sensitive skin.

Selvam’s voice continued. Unhurried. In control.

“The vehicle uses the right tool for each phase. That’s not unconventional. That’s engineering.”

She began to circle. Slow. Tight. Her middle finger pressed against the hood, moving in small clockwise rotations. The friction built gradually. Her breath shortened. Each exhale came a little quicker than the one before.

On screen, Selvam’s jawline tightened once when the interviewer pushed on a technical point. The silver at his temples caught the studio light. His shoulders filled the frame. Broad. Solid. The particular physical presence that had haunted her since the well, since the wooden panel, since the accidental glimpse that had rewritten something fundamental in her nineteen-year-old body.

Her finger moved faster.

The circles tightened. The friction sharpened. Her clit had swollen under the hood, the sensitive nub pressing against her fingertip with each rotation. She flicked. Quick, light strokes across the exposed tip, then back to circling. Her hips tilted up off the cushion without her permission. The blanket shifted. Cool air touched her bare thighs for a second before she pulled the fabric back.

She bit down on the inside of her cheek. Hard. The pain helped. Her free hand gripped the blanket edge, knuckles white, anchoring herself against the building pressure low in her spine.

Wetness spread across her fingers. Slick. Warm. Her clit throbbed against her touch. She worked it in short, rapid strokes now... flick, flick, flick... pausing every few seconds to press hard against the swollen nub, holding the pressure until the sensation bordered on too much, then resuming the flicking rhythm.

Selvam’s voice played on. Steady. Authoritative. The particular deep resonance that vibrated through the living room speakers and into her body where she sat bare beneath a blanket on her parents’ sofa at one in the morning.

Her thighs began to shake. The muscles clamped inward, squeezing around her wrist. The pressure built... sharp, focused, radiating outward from her clit through her pelvis and into her lower belly. Her back arched. Her free hand crushed the blanket fabric. Her jaw locked around the inside of her cheek, the metallic taste of blood faint on her tongue.

Then release.

Her whole body locked. Hips rigid against the cushion. Thighs clamped tight around her hand. The orgasm rolled through her in silent, shuddering waves... five, six, seven pulses of heat that traveled from her clit up through her core and into her chest. She didn’t make a sound. Didn’t need to. The television covered everything. Selvam’s voice. The interviewer’s questions. The particular professional exchange of two adults discussing rocket science while a nineteen-year-old girl came apart on a sofa twelve thousand kilometers away.

She held her finger against her clit through the last pulses. Gentle now. Circling. Soothing the oversensitive tissue. Her breath came back in slow, ragged pulls. The wetness between her thighs had spread to the inside of her palm.

The television played on.

Then...

“Why are you watching TV at this time, dear?”

Her father’s voice.

From the hallway. Not loud. Casual. The particular tone of a man who had gotten up for water and found something unexpected.

Yazhini’s hand froze between her legs. Her heart stopped. Then hammered. The blood drained from her face so fast she felt the room tilt.

Krishnamoorthy stood in the doorway. Silk pajamas. Balding head caught in the blue TV light. His mustache was sleep-rumpled on one side. He held an empty glass.

“I... ” Her voice cracked. She cleared her throat. “Couldn’t sleep. The interview from today. I wanted to watch it again.”

His eyes moved to the screen. Selvam’s face filled the frame. Composed. Broad-shouldered. The silver catching light.

“At one in the morning?” Krishnamoorthy stepped into the room. The floor creaked under his weight. “The man will still be famous tomorrow, ma.”

He came closer. Three steps. Two. His hand reached for the blanket.

“And why are you covering yourself in such hot weather? The fan is off. You’ll sweat through that shirt.”

His fingers closed on the blanket edge. Tugged. Once. Light, but deliberate.

Yazhini’s hand clamped down on the fabric from underneath. Her thighs pressed together. The wetness between them was a secret the blanket was keeping. A secret her father could not have.

“It’s... ” Her brain raced. “... my period started. Early. I didn’t have anything ready. The blanket is... just in case.”

The words came out in a rush. Desperate. Plausible. The particular lie of a young woman who had spent nineteen years learning what her father would and wouldn’t question.

Krishnamoorthy’s hand paused. His mustache twitched. Something moved behind his eyes... calculation, brief and visible... then settled.

“Ah.” He released the blanket. Stepped back. “I’ll turn the AC on for you. Don’t stay up too late.”

He crossed to the wall unit. Pressed the button. The compressor hummed to life. Cool air began to flow from the vents.

“Goodnight, ma.”

“Goodnight, Appa.”

He walked back to the hallway. The glass caught blue light once, then disappeared. His bedroom door closed with a soft click.

Yazhini didn’t move for ten full seconds. Her hand stayed between her thighs. The wetness had cooled slightly against her skin. The television played on. Selvam’s voice. The interviewer. Rockets and orbits and a man who built impossible things.

Her fingers began to move again.

Slow. Circling. The oversensitivity had faded. The wetness was still there, slick and warm. Her clit responded to the touch... soft at first, then firmer as the blood returned. She worked it with her middle finger, pressing, circling, building the friction back from nothing.

The second orgasm arrived differently. Slower. Deeper. A warmth that spread through her pelvis and settled there, low and full, before tightening into something that made her thighs tremble and her breath catch behind her teeth.

She came with her eyes on the screen. On Selvam’s face. On the particular stillness of a man who had no idea that twelve thousand kilometers away, a nineteen-year-old girl was touching herself to the sound of his voice on her parents’ television.

When it was over, she kept her finger there. Gentle. Circling. Soothing.

“I miss you, Uncle,” she whispered.

The words barely carried past the blanket. The television didn’t hear them. Selvam didn’t hear them. The compressor hummed. Cool air washed across her bare legs. The standby light pulsed red in the corner.

She left the recording playing.
