We took the short-cut down the slope, moving as fast as we could through the trees. At the first sharp hairpin bend we found a cluster of large, heavy rocks and stones along the outer edge of the path. The rocks were much heavier than they looked. The three of us braced our shoulders and hands against the largest ones and pushed with all our strength. Our feet slipped on the loose earth. Our arms burned with the effort. For a moment it seemed the rocks would not move at all.
Then the slope took over.
Once the heaviest rock shifted even a little, gravity caught it. The big stone began to roll, slowly at first, then faster, crashing downward onto the narrow road. The other heavy rocks followed, tumbling and slamming into one another until the entire path was completely blocked by a rough, solid barrier of stone. No vehicle could pass.
We had just hidden behind a thick tree when the ambulance appeared around the bend and stopped abruptly. The engine idled. Two doors opened.
Muthu and Balu climbed out. Both of them were shirtless, wearing only black shorts. Their bodies were dark-skinned and rough, with broad, heavy faces and the hard, unattractive look of men who had spent years in rough labour. Sweat already shone on their chests and shoulders. They cursed loudly when they saw the heavy rocks sealing the road and immediately began trying to lift and roll them aside one by one. Arjun remained inside the vehicle, probably guarding the Goddess idol.
From behind the tree Sathyavathi watched them without blinking. Her face was calm, her eyes sharp and decided. After only a few seconds she turned to me and Malliga. There was no hesitation in her voice.
“We have to kill these bastards.”
Malliga and I both stared at her.
“What?” I whispered.
“Kill them?” Malliga repeated, her voice tight.
“How? Sathya, what are you saying?”
Sathyavathi did not look away from us. Her tone stayed even and certain, as if she had already worked out every step.
“They stole our Goddess. They planned to sell her to a foreign gang for money. They have disrespected her, disrespected the temple, and disrespected every family in our village. Men like this do not deserve to leave this forest alive. If we allow them to go, the Goddess will be lost and they will only return later. That cannot happen.”
Malliga shook her head, still shocked.

“They are too strong, Sathya. How can the three of us kill them?”
Sathyavathi glanced once more at the road where the two men were struggling with the rocks, then looked straight back at us. Her voice remained steady and bold.
“There are caves further down the path. Five or ten of them, close to the waterfall. Some of the openings lead directly to the cliff above the water. The drop is deep. Anyone who falls from there will not survive.”
She spoke as if the plan was already fixed in her mind.
“We seduce them. They are already crazy about us. We have seen how they look at us, how they touch us, how little control they have. We use exactly that. We lead them into the caves. When they are close enough to the edge, we push them off the cliff. That is how we end this.”
Malliga’s eyes widened.

“Seduce them and kill them? Sathya—”
“Yes,” Sathyavathi said firmly, cutting across her.
“That is exactly what we are going to do. They took our Goddess. They were ready to sell her. This is beyond anything we can forgive or leave to chance. The village men will come, but it may be too late by then. We are here now. We are the only ones who can stop them in time.”
She looked at each of us in turn, her expression open and determined.
“They have already shown they will use force and threats to get whatever they want. We will use the one thing that still works on them — their lust. We make them follow us into the caves. We finish it there. For the Goddess. For the village. There is no other way.”
I felt the weight of her certainty settle over me. The shock was still present, but Sathyavathi’s bold, clear decision left little room for argument. Malliga remained silent for a long moment, her breathing uneven, then slowly nodded once.
Sathyavathi turned her eyes back to the road. Muthu and Balu, still shirtless in their black shorts, were continuing to clear the last of the heavy stones. She watched them with the same focused calm.
“When the path is open again they will move forward,” she said.
“That is when we show ourselves and begin. Stay ready.”
The three of us stayed hidden behind the tree. Sathyavathi’s plan now stood between us, fully spoken and fully decided, while the evening light faded and the two men worked to clear the barrier we had created.

We remained hidden behind the tree, watching Muthu and Balu struggle with the last of the heavy rocks. The evening light was fading fast. The sound of stone scbanging against stone filled the quiet forest path.
Malliga’s hands were clenched tightly in the folds of her saree. After a long moment she turned to Sathyavathi, her voice low and strained.
“Sathya… I hate him.”
Sathyavathi looked at her but did not speak.
“Balu,” Malliga continued, the words coming out tight.
“He is ugly. The way he looks at me… the way he touches me… I cannot stand it. How am I supposed to seduce him? The moment I go near him he will know he can enjoy me. He will take full advantage. I will not be able to stop him once he starts.”
Her voice shook slightly on the last words. The fear and disgust were clear on her face.
Sathyavathi held her gaze. Her own expression stayed calm and firm.
“I know,” she said quietly.
“I know exactly how he is. I know what he will try to do the moment you give him even a little space.”
Malliga’s eyes searched her face.
“Then how can you ask me to do this?”
Sathyavathi shook her head once.
“I am not telling you to let him fuck you,” she said clearly.
“Listen carefully. You seduce him just enough. You smile, you let him come close, you allow a little romance — some touching, some kissing — so that he follows you without suspicion. You take him inside the cave. You keep him distracted near the edge. When he is close enough and not expecting it, we push him off the cliff. That is all. You do not have to give him everything. Only enough to lead him where we need him.”
Malliga still looked uncertain, but the distinction seemed to ease some of the panic in her eyes.
“Just enough to get him to the edge,” Sathyavathi repeated.
“Nothing more than that if you can help it. We do this for the Goddess. They stole her from the temple. They were going to sell her to strangers. If we do not stop them here, she will be gone forever. That is bigger than our hatred. Bigger than our fear.”
She placed a steady hand on Malliga’s arm for a moment.
“We do not have to like it. We only have to do it. Once it is finished, they will never touch any of us again. But first we have to get them into those caves. That is the only way.”
Malliga looked down at the ground, her breathing uneven. The struggle was still visible on her face, but after a long silence she gave a small, reluctant nod.
“For the Goddess,” she whispered.
“For the Goddess,” Sathyavathi repeated.
I stood beside them, listening, the same heavy resolve settling deeper into my own chest. Ahead of us on the path, Muthu and Balu finally rolled the last large rock aside. The ambulance engine revved once. The way forward was open again.
Sathyavathi straightened.
“It is time,” she said.

Malliga was still not fully convinced. She kept her voice low, but the fear in it was clear.
“What if he does not stop at touching and kissing?” she asked.
“What if he wants to fuck me? What do I do then?”
Sathyavathi did not look away. Her answer came without hesitation.
“Then you cooperate.”
Malliga’s eyes widened.
“You let him,” Sathyavathi continued, her tone steady and practical.
“If it reaches that point, you do not fight him. You let him enjoy you. You make him believe you are willing. That is the only way he will completely trust you. If he feels even a little resistance or suspicion, he will not follow you deeper into the caves. He has to believe you want him. Only then will he go with you all the way to the edge of the cliff.”
Malliga stared at her, the conflict plain on her face.
“You are asking me to let that ugly bastard fuck me.”
“I am asking you to do whatever is needed so that he trusts you,” Sathyavathi replied.
“Seduce him. Win his trust. If that means letting him fuck you, then yes — you let him. You make him believe he has won you. Once his guard is down and he is following you near the cliff, that is when we push him. Until that moment, you do whatever keeps him believing in you.”
She softened her voice only slightly, but the determination remained.
“This is not about our bodies, Malliga. This is about the Goddess. They stole her. They were going to sell her. If we fail here, she is gone forever. A few minutes of what he does to you is nothing compared to losing her. You seduce him, you win his trust completely, and then we end it at the cliff. That is the plan.”
Malliga looked down at the ground. Her hands were still clenched, but after a long, heavy silence she gave another small nod. The reluctance was still there, yet the weight of the Goddess and the village had settled over her resistance.
“I understand,” she whispered.
Sathyavathi placed a brief hand on her shoulder.
“Good. Stay ready. When they start moving again, we begin.”
Ahead of us, Muthu and Balu finished clearing the last rock. The ambulance engine rose in volume. The path was open. The three of us remained behind the tree for one final moment, the plan now fully clear between us, before we would step out and start the most dangerous part of the evening.
