The lead engineer signed. Then the junior. Then the third, a woman who hadn’t spoken at either meeting but whose calculations filled seven appendix pages in the smallest folder.
No one spoke during the signing. The pens made soft sounds against the paper. The lake outside the window held perfect stillness, a mirror for the pale sky, and the reflection of the room’s interior lay across the water like a second, quieter version of itself.
The new entity was named simply Vanmmer Space.
Its first mandate occupied a single paragraph on the first page of the first folder. Design and prove a reusable launch system. Use it to deploy and maintain an orbital constellation. The constellation would give Vanmmer reliable coverage in every remote region the autonomous fleet entered. No exceptions. No fallbacks. The vehicles would never go silent again.
The European team brought their engineering depth. Three years of launch vehicle development, compressed into equations, test data, and the particular intuition that comes from watching things explode and understanding why. Their notebooks contained failures that the folders didn’t mention. Those failures were worth more than the successes.
Selvam and Vanitha brought capital. Operational clarity. The original vision that had sent them walking a depot perimeter in the mist two weeks ago, measuring cracked concrete with their eyes while a prototype vehicle stalled and died behind them.
The final signature dried on the last page of the smallest folder. The woman engineer blotted it gently with the edge of her sleeve. A small gesture. Careful.
Vanitha closed her folder. The covers met with a soft paper sound. She looked at Selvam.
Neither smiled.
The decision felt inevitable. As if the roadside encounter... the failed loop, the mist, the engineer’s hesitation when Vanitha asked about the sensor suite... had already contained this ending. As if the quiet evening conversation across the same oak table, with the black lake beyond the glass and the coffee going cold, had been nothing more than the mechanical unfolding of something that had been decided the moment Selvam watched the vehicle stall for the third time and didn’t look away.
The lead engineer gathered his copy of the largest folder. His hands were steady. The raw spot on his jaw had faded to pink.
“We start Monday,” he said.
Not a question.
Selvam nodded. Once.
Outside, Zurich continued its ordinary morning. Trams moved along the lakeside avenue. A delivery van double-parked outside a bakery. A woman walked a dog along the promenade, the leash loose in her hand. The city had no idea that something had just been born in a quiet room above the silver water. The city didn’t need to know.
Inside the room, a new company existed.
Vanitha stood. The saree settled around her legs with its familiar whisper. The gold at her waist caught the morning light and held it.
Selvam remained seated for a moment longer. His eyes moved to the window, to the lake, to the pale sky above it. Something passed across his face... brief, private, gone before it had fully formed... and then he stood too.
The chairs scbangd softly against the floor.
The European team gathered their folders. Handshakes were exchanged. Short. Firm. The kind of handshakes that belong to the beginning of something rather than the end.
The door opened. Closed.
Vanitha and Selvam stood alone at the table. The empty coffee cups. The brass pens. The pale oak wood holding the impression of six people who had sat around it and changed the direction of several lives, including their own.
“The constellation comes first,” Vanitha said. Her voice was quiet. Matter-of-fact.
“Yes.”
“Then the rockets.”
“Yes.”
She picked up her pen. Slid it into the inner pocket of her jacket. The brass caught the light once and disappeared.
Selvam’s hand found the small of her back. Not pushing. Just there. Warm through the silk.
They walked to the door together. Half a pace apart. The same distance they’d maintained walking the depot perimeter two weeks ago, through mist and cracked concrete, while a vehicle that refused to work properly spun its wheels behind them.
The door opened. Closed.
The lake outside the window held the room’s empty reflection. Silver. Still. Perfect.
