Mrs. Rao
It was Sunday morning and she was already dressed up when Kajol received the call from Mrs. Rao about the visit to the art gallery. She was apparently a couple of miles away from their apartment and would be arriving soon. No, Mr. Rao hadn’t come, in fact couldn’t – for he had some urgent reports to send to London. That’s what Mrs. Rao had conveyed on phone. And she and Ramesh had gone downstairs.
Mrs. Rao stepped out of the company limo and Ramesh greeted her and in turn introduced Kajol.
“Call me Lekha...”, she had said and Kajol’s eyes shot up for after all she was the boss’s wife.
“All my friends do that…” and Kajol forced a plastic smile to her face. This mannequin thin woman had a inch thick coat of make-up on her face. And God! She looked so old and sickly.
“Thank you Lekhaji, Sry I mean Lekha”, Kajol smiled brightly as the other woman clasped her hand.
Ramesh’s face was suddenly furrowed. “How come sir didn’t come. Should I call him to see if I could help him in the office?”
“Arre don’t bother. He specifically mentioned that it was some last minute report that the London office had misplaced or something like that. When I badgered him about backing out from today’s outing, he was so sorry and contrite and all that. Said that, he would like to join us the moment he becomes free.”
Now it was Ramesh’s turn to fidget. He made a small voice.
“Wouldn’t it be nice if both you ladies were without a man tagging along…” His voice started to falter. “You know, both of you could enjoy so much with each other…”
Mrs. Rao was perplexed, for her plan was working better than expected and she paused to give a suitable reply. But Kajol beat her to it. She laughed brightly and said
“You know Lekhaji, er Lekha … the real reason, sir is not coming and there is cricket on the tv.
“You rogue”, Mrs. Rao shouted in visibly mock anger at Ramesh. Her tight features than relaxed into a smile. “Go Ramesh! I will tell your sir that I purposely didn’t want you to come as I wanted to know Kajol better. Is it okay if we stay a little late?”
Ramesh bobbed his head furiously for he was already calculating the number of beer cans stacked in the fridge. How wonderful to have a couple of quality hours in front of the tv with no wife hovering around. He thanked Mrs. Rao profusely. He was already feeling so happy.
And the ladies had set off.
