Chapter 5B – What He Carries Home

Meera fell asleep easily, her breathing slowing into the familiar rhythm he had known for thirteen years.

Her hand rested lightly on his chest, fingers relaxed.

The bedroom was quiet except for the ceiling fan and the soft night sounds from the lane outside.

Maaran kept his eyes open.

His body would not settle. A low, unwanted heat still moved under his skin, left over from the studio.

He could still see Aadhini standing near the easel the careful way she held herself, the faint flush that had risen on her neck when he stepped closer, the moment her eyes had dropped before she forced them back up.

There had been something restrained in her, something tightly held, and it had pulled at him more than open invitation ever did.

He shifted slightly on the mattress. Meera murmured in her sleep but did not wake. The warmth of her body against his side felt familiar and steady

It should have been enough to ground him. Tonight it only made the other feeling sharper.
Maaran stared at the dark ceiling and let the memories come..

The soft weight of Aadhini’s breasts when she had crossed her arms. The way her blouse had tightened with each deeper breath.

The controlled sound of her voice when she spoke to him, and how it had lowered without her seeming to notice.

He remembered the faint scent of her skin mixed with the turpentine and charcoal of the studio. Clean. Warm. Unsteady.

His cock thickened slowly against his thigh.
He did not touch it. He only breathed through the heat and let it stay.

The contrast was clear and uncomfortable.

Beside him lay the woman who had built a life with him, who trusted him, who slept without suspicion.

And in his mind stood another woman married like him, careful like him who had already begun to occupy more space than she should.

Maaran turned his head and looked at Meera’s sleeping face in the dim light…

Affection moved through him, real and unchanged.

He did not want to damage what they had. He had never been careless with it before.

But the hunger that had opened in the studio did not care about that.

It stayed low and constant in his body, quiet but insistent. He already knew the next time Aadhini came to the studio would be different.

He would look at her longer. He would stand closer.

He would test how much she would allow before she stepped back. And he was not sure he would stop himself.

Maaran closed his eyes and forced his breathing to slow. Meera’s hand remained on his chest, light and trusting.

He placed his own hand over it and kept it there, as if the contact could hold the rest of him in place.
It did not.

Somewhere beneath the steady sounds of the house, the studio still lived in him the light, the silence, the woman who had stood in it, and the clear knowledge that something had already begun to shift.

He slept late, and even then the heat followed him into the dark.
