Chapter 3: Sleepless Night
The ceiling fan turned in slow, lazy circles above her.

The room was dark and still except for the steady rhythm of her husband’s breathing.

Aadhini lay on her back and stared at the blades.

Every time her eyes closed, the same image burned behind them  his gaze on the crossing, the slight tilt of his head toward the shaded lane, the pull that had made her pulse stumble.

What is happening to me?

Her body would not settle. Soft night pants and a loose t-shirt clung to skin that felt too warm, too awake.

She remembered the slow path his eyes had taken across her curves. Shame and something hotter twisted together low in her belly.

He is older. A stranger.

The thought arrived with no comfort.

Her heart ignored it.

A deep, sweet ache had taken root between her thighs. She imagined stepping into that studio, standing in front of him again, letting those artistic hands finish what his eyes had already begun.

Her breath shortened. Guilt rose in a thick wave, and the heat only sharpened beneath it.

She could not stay still any longer.

On silent bare feet she left the bed and crossed the house. The kitchen tiles were cool under her soles.

She opened the freezer, took the ice-cold bottle, and poured a glass with hands that were no longer steady.

The first swallow was greedy.

“Haaah…”

Sharp cold raced down her throat and bloomed across her chest. Water escaped the corner of her mouth and soaked into the thin fabric of her t-shirt.

The sudden chill against warm skin changed something.

She paused, heart loud in her ears. Then she tilted the glass again  deliberately this time.

The icy stream ran down her chin and throat, soaking the cloth until it turned transparent over the full weight of her breasts.

Her nipples tightened at once into hard, aching peaks, clear against the wet fabric.

She bit her lip and tipped the glass further, guiding the cold in slow rivulets.

Water traced the sensitive undersides of her breasts and made her shiver.

Lower.

She poured again.

The stream slid down her stomach, gathered in the deep dip of her navel, then overflowed and slipped beneath the waistband of her night pants.

Freezing trails kissed overheated skin, ran over the soft mound between her thighs, and slid along the most intimate folds. A sharp gasp left her.

“Ahh… Mmm…”

The low sound filled the quiet kitchen. She closed her eyes and let the water flow once more, imagining strong fingers following the same path slow, possessive, learning every wet inch of her.

Her free hand trembled at her side, fighting the urge to follow. Her thighs quivered. The contrast between ice and the heat at her core made the room tilt.

She stood there for a long moment, breathing hard, nipples tight, skin glistening.

Only when the glass was nearly empty did she set it down. Her cheeks burned with cold and something she refused to name.

Footsteps sounded from the bedroom.

Confusion flickered through her.

In the studio the desk lamp threw a warm circle of light. Charcoal moved fast across the paper.

Maaran was no longer only drawing. He was claiming her with every stroke  the lush underside of her breasts, the elegant dip of her waist, the generous curve of her hips.

Each line sent a fresh pulse of need through his own body.
She might come tomorrow.

The thought curved his mouth into a dark, hopeful smile.

The way she had looked back at him… he was certain she had felt it too. He wanted her in this room.

Close enough to catch the faint sweetness of her skin, to hear the small hitch in her breath, to finally touch what he had only rendered in black and grey.

He stepped back and studied the finished drawing. It was powerful. Sensual. Dangerous.

Her dark eyes met his from the paper, full of fire and things she had not yet admitted.

Maaran reached out and traced his fingers lightly over the sheet, imagining warm living flesh beneath the charcoal. His body was rigid, aching.

Soft lines rose in his mind like smoke:

“Dusky curves in silk and fire,
Breasts that rise like ocean waves,
Hips that whisper ‘come closer’,
Eyes that burn my soul in chains…”

He whispered them aloud, voice rough. His fingers kept moving over the drawing as if it were her skin.

I don’t just want to draw her.
I want to hold her down, taste every inch of her, make her moan my name until she forgets everything else.

He wiped his hands and left the sketch displayed on the board where the light would catch it. The clock showed the night was nearly gone, but sleep was the last thing on his mind.

Tomorrow he would wait.

If she came, he would be ready.
