Echoes of Unspoken Longing- Married Woman's Forbidden Infatuation

Chapter 4

Morning light slipped quietly into the room. Meera opened her eyes and lay still for a moment, listening to the soft rhythm of Arun’s breathing beside her.

The sheets still carried the faint warmth of the previous night. She turned her head slightly and looked at him, the familiar lines of his face, the relaxed curve of his mouth in sleep.

A quiet confusion settled over her. Last night her body had answered him with an intensity that still surprised her. The memory of how wet she had been, how openly she had moaned, made her cheeks warm even now. She slipped out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake him.

In the kitchen the routine began again. The smell of ginger tea rose as she stirred the pot. Their son came running in, still in his pajamas, and hugged her legs.

“Good morning, Amma,” he said, voice thick with sleep.

Meera smiled and kissed the top of his head. “Good morning, my love. Did you sleep well?”

Arun appeared a few minutes later, rubbing his eyes. He walked over and placed a hand on her waist, pressing a soft kiss to her temple.

“You were restless last night,” he said quietly. “Everything okay?”

“I’m fine,” she replied, handing him his tea. Their fingers touched for a second  ordinary, warm. “Just a lot on my mind with work.”

Breakfast passed in the usual way. Their son talked about a new game he wanted to play at college. Arun mentioned a meeting he had later in the day. Meera listened, nodded, and smiled at the right moments. Yet part of her felt slightly removed, as if she were watching the scene from a small distance.

After Arun and their son left, the house grew quiet. Meera stood by the sink, washing the cups slowly. The water ran over her hands, cool and steady.

She tried to focus on the simple task, but the thoughts kept returning to the soft cream saree, Rohan’s quiet compliment, the brief moment under the banyan tree when the air between them had felt heavier than it should.

It’s nothing, she told herself. Just a few kind words. People say nice things sometimes.
She finished the kitchen work, got ready, and left for the office.

The day moved at its usual pace. Files, stamps, small conversations with Lakshmi and Priya. Meera kept herself busy, answering questions and completing pending work. Around noon she stepped out for a short walk to clear her head. The sun was bright, the air warm.

As she walked near the main gate, she saw him.
Rohan was standing a little distance away, speaking to someone near a parked vehicle. He was turned slightly, so he did not notice her. Meera stopped for a moment, her steps slowing without her meaning to. The simple sight of him  the way he stood, the calm set of his shoulders  sent a small, unexpected flutter through her chest.
She turned away quickly and walked back toward the building.

For the rest of the afternoon the image stayed with her. She tried to push it aside, focusing on the papers in front of her, but the quiet awareness remained. Something small had shifted. She could feel it in the way her thoughts kept drifting, in the way a simple glimpse of him had stayed longer than it should.

That evening the house felt the same as always. Her son ran to her with a drawing. Arun asked about her day. They ate together, talked about ordinary things, and settled into the familiar rhythm of the night.

The room was quiet except for the soft whir of the ceiling fan. Their son had fallen asleep hours earlier.

Meera was lying on her side, the thin nightgown loose around her shoulders, when Arun shifted closer.

He placed a hand on her waist, the touch warm and familiar. “Still awake?” he asked softly.

“Mmm,” she answered, not turning fully toward him.

Arun leaned in and kissed the curve of her neck. His lips moved slowly, unhurried. Meera felt the warmth of his breath against her skin and the solid weight of his body behind her. She closed her eyes as his hand slid upward, gently cupping her breast through the soft fabric. His thumb brushed over her nipple in a slow circle.

A quiet sound left her throat. Arun’s touch grew more deliberate. He pushed the nightgown higher and traced the line of her hip, then lower. When his fingers reached between her thighs, he found her already warm and slick.
“You’re ready,” he murmured against her ear, a note of quiet pleasure in his voice.

Meera turned onto her back, looking up at him in the dim light. He settled between her legs and entered her with a slow, steady push. The wet sound of their joining filled the small space between them. Meera’s breath caught; her hands came up to rest on his shoulders.

They moved together in a familiar rhythm, deep, unhurried thrusts that made the bed shift gently beneath them. Arun kissed her mouth, then the side of her throat. Meera’s body answered him, hips rising to meet each movement. Soft moans escaped her lips, low and open.

After a while Arun’s breathing grew heavier. He held her closer, thrusting a little deeper, and she felt the warm pulse of his release inside her. He stayed there for a moment, forehead resting against hers, before carefully withdrawing and pulling her into his arms.

“I love you,” he whispered, already half-asleep.

“I love you too,” Meera replied.

She lay against his chest, listening to his heartbeat slow.

Arun’s breathing had already deepened into sleep. Meera lay still for a long time, staring at the dark ceiling.

The warmth of their earlier closeness lingered on her skin, yet something restless remained inside her, a soft, unfinished hunger that refused to settle.

She waited until she was certain he was deeply asleep. Then, carefully, she turned onto her back. Her hand slipped under the nightgown and moved lower, fingers brushing over the still-sensitive skin between her thighs.

She was wet again, the slickness easy under her touch.
Her eyes closed.

A vague image began to form in her mind, not a clear face, not a name. Just the sense of someone close, the feeling of being looked at with quiet intensity, the memory of a calm voice and a brief, lingering gaze. The details stayed blurred, deliberately incomplete. It was not Arun. She knew that much.

Her fingers moved in slow circles, then slipped inside. A soft breath escaped her lips. She bit down gently on her lower lip, keeping the sounds small. The pleasure built steadily, warmer and sharper than she expected. Her hips shifted against the mattress. The unclear image in her mind stayed with her presence, a feeling of being truly noticed  as her fingers worked faster.

When the release came, it was quiet but strong. Her body tensed, a low moan caught in her throat, and warm waves rolled through her. For a few seconds she simply breathed, hand still pressed between her legs.

Then the guilt arrived.

It settled heavily in her chest, cold and sudden. Meera pulled her hand away and turned onto her side, facing away from Arun. Her heart was still racing. She stared into the dark, the pleasure already fading into a tight,

uncomfortable feeling.

What am I doing?

The question stayed with her long after the room returned to silence.
