Chapter 156 - Dejavu.
Nikkitha sat frozen as the doctor’s words sank in. Pregnant? Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach. She tried to trace back the timeline—three months. She had always been careful, religiously taking her pills. Yes, those months had been chaotic, with limited intimacy, but both Jay and Tharun had been with her.
She looked at Jay, her voice barely above a whisper. “I was always careful… I took the pills. I don’t know how this happened.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Jay moved closer and sat beside her. “Hey, why are you crying? Talk to me.”
Nikkitha shook her head, her voice cracking. “I’m such a mess, Jay. Lately, I’ve been trying so hard to fix everything for everyone else. The problems I caused are still hanging over so many people… and now there’s a life growing inside me. This little one deserves a stable world, a better start. I don’t even know how I’m going to clean up this mess for the baby.”
Jay gently placed a protective hand on her shoulder.
“What mess are you talking about? This little one is going to have the best mother in the world.”
Nikkitha turned to him, eyes full of pain. “And who am I supposed to show as the father? I can’t name Tharun or you. Neither of you is supposed to be in my life going forward. Plus… I was with both of you around the same time.” She winced. “It’s disgusting even thinking about how I’ll figure this out.”
She took a shaky breath. “If it’s yours, I can’t hold you accountable. I’ve been trying so hard to detach from you, to not burden you anymore. But somehow, situations—and honestly, even I—keep pulling us back together. You’re the only real friend I have. If I had anyone else, I wouldn’t keep coming back into your life like this.”
Her voice softened with guilt.
“At the same time, I can’t make Tharun responsible either. He might pull away from Mithra again, and all my efforts to fix that will be wasted.”
Jay smiled gently. “You know, Nikkitha, this is your problem. You always want to make everything right for everyone. The baby hasn’t even entered the world yet, and you’re already worrying about giving them a perfect father figure. Stop overthinking, Nikki. Ignore all of that for now.”
He squeezed her shoulder. “Let’s deal with what’s in front of us. Consider this a gift. The baby came at the right time—like an angel. Just like you, this little one seems determined to set things right. Look, it arrived exactly when you needed the most help recovering those assets from your stepmother.”
Nikkitha gave a small, tired smile. “Yeah…”
“I’m already going to act as your husband,” Jay continued. “Let me take on the role of father too.
Maybe I’ll even be the real one. Either way, I’ll be there for the baby’s future.”
She looked at him for a long moment.
after a pause she nodded her head in denial No.
“I knew you’d say that. I know you’d be more than willing to be a real father. But what if you’re not the biological one? Even if you are… I don’t want you taking on that responsibility. I’ll raise the baby on my own. You should go back to your life and start fresh.”
Im glad you are helping me, but dont carry my burden.. its unnecessary.
Jay shook his head. “I won’t pressure you. But tell me this—if Sharmi’s husband can willingly take on the role of father out of love for her, why can’t I?”
Nikkitha frowned. “How is that even related?”
“It’s related,” Jay said softly, “because I still love you.”
No Jay, don't do this, you clearly deserve better life. Not with me.
Im already indebted for still treating me good in your life.
Nikkitha’s eyes filled with fresh tears. “I’m sorry, Jay. After everything that’s happened, I don’t have any qualification to be your love or wife. I just need to be alone. Marital or love life wont suit me again.
Remember what you once said? We were really good as friends. The moment we fell in love, we both started taking drastic steps, leaning on each other too much, venting everything… and we lost it all.”
She swallowed hard. Also, “I’m scared. I’m terrified we’ll go through the same pain again. Let’s just stay friends, as long as you want to be.
As for the baby… right now, I don’t have any other choice. I’m really grateful you’re willing to act as the father. I’m fine with that for now. But later, after the case ends, after i take assets, i will move on, you can detach yourself from the baby’s life.”
Jay stopped her immediately. “No. That’s cruel to the little one.”
“Just be practical,” she whispered. “What if it’s not even your baby?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Jay said firmly. “You’re carrying the baby, and as long as you’re my wife, this child is mine too.”
but i'm not your wife?! Nikkitha said.
Jay: To the rest of the world you are, the world will see you give birth when i still act as your husband, the identity let the baby carry for real.
Nikkitha protested, but Jay won over the argument for now.
Nikkitha’s tears welled up again, but she quickly blinked them away.
Jay hesitated for a second, then added gently, “You should stop being intimate with Tharun.”
“I know,” she replied. “I’ll tell him. Maybe after the birth I can make it up to him somehow… but honestly, I don’t think I need to plan much. I can already feel him pulling away. Last month and this month, our time together felt mechanical—short and distant. But we talked a lot. He’s suffering, carrying so much guilt. I’m glad Mithra is finally making the right moves.”
The details didnt bother or gave anything high to Jay, he casually ignored it all he wanted is Nikki should be careful until the birth.
Jay extended his hand. “Come on.” He helped her up and took her back to the hostel. Once inside, he told her to pack her things. “From now on, the baby is under my care. You need a better place. We’ll figure everything out later.”
Nikkitha started to protest, but Jay looked at her earnestly. “If you really see me as your friend, come with me.”
After a long pause, she finally nodded and began packing her trolley.
The following week, armed with medical reports, the two went to court to submit the documents. But Nikkitha’s stepmother immediately pushed back, waving a copy of their divorce papers and accusing them of faking everything.
Jay and Nikkitha explained that they had had arguments, but after learning about the pregnancy, they had reconciled and were back together as a married couple.
The stepmother wasn’t convinced. “This is all drama,” she sneered.
“If you’re really back and married again, then show the proof.. or legally register it again and bring the documents. How do we know you’re not just acting to steal the assets?”
Nikkitha was stunned. She had been okay with Jay pretending for her sake, but actually pushing him back into a real marriage for her own benefit? That felt like they back to square one.
It reminded her events like Dejavu, Nikkitha wanted desperately to escape marriage and she claimed Jay loved her and got married, now same step mother is asking her to show legally married documents, almost pushing them again for a marriage.
She looked at Jay helplessly... she already know the answer from his eyes... he murmured something in her ears..
Why does fate keep choosing Jay for me, again and again? she said to herself.
