Why do you feel this is not normal or won't happen? We all know that the story of Tharun's past has not been revealed even though everything was cleared from the start with all the characters on this side of the story...don't you think it was kept in the dark for a reason? 

When that is true then you have to believe that this was always part of the original plot and not a deviation...Nikita's decision were always right, and its her life and her right to make a decision for herself and having said that, it doesn't mean they are right for others...her decisions will have consequences for others, she only kept Jay in her focus always and made sure her decisions won't impact Jay deeply and made sure he moved on as well but she never thought about Mithra or Tharun's parents or even Jay's parents so what Sharmi is saying is true even though its not Nikita's entire fault. 

Mostly it would be Tharun's fault if their relationship falls apart.
