It would have been fine if Tharun and Nikita really love each other to end up together but it will be hard to accept that reality when they stamped several hearts in the process to be together, Some say in reality that's how things work, In reality people settle with what they choose and move on but think also in reality people also leave persons like Tharun in a split second once they realize true love, once they realize who they love isn't it? Nikita here adamantly stuck with Tharun but that is not what happens outside, today girls are killing husbands/Fiancee for their lovers :)

If not for making Nikita realize her mistakes and reconcile love for Jay, what is the point of bringing together Tharun and Nikita and making this look like life book (autobiography) of Nikita on how nobly she ended things with Jay, the story would lose its purpose after all this time in my opinion.
