Chapter 101 - Hidden Presence
After nearly two hours, the doctors completed a full set of tests and scans on Jay. They emerged from the emergency ward with a clearer picture.
“He has a hairline fracture in his elbow from the impact and a moderate concussion due to the head injury,” the senior doctor explained. “He lost consciousness temporarily because of the shock and whiplash, but the MRI shows no major internal bleeding or severe damage. We’ve performed CT scans of his head, neck, chest, and elbow. There’s chest bruising and whiplash as well. We’ve placed his elbow in a splint, given him pain medication, and he’s stable now. We’ll keep him under observation for at least 48 hours with neurological checks every few hours.”
Nikitha listened intently, her heart still racing. While Jay remained unconscious in the ICU bed, she pulled the doctor aside.
“Please… don’t tell him I came,” she whispered urgently. “I don’t want him to know I was here.”
The doctor frowned. “I can’t promise to deceive him. If he asks me directly, I have to answer honestly. But I won’t volunteer the information.”
She pleaded, voice cracking. “We are separated. It’s complicated. I don’t want him to think anything otherwise right now. Please.”
The doctor gave a reluctant nod and walked away.
Nikitha quickly unlocked Jay’s phone, found Sharmi’s number, and asked a nurse to call her. She explained the situation briefly — Jay had been in an accident and needed someone with him. Sharmi was shocked but promised to leave immediately in another car.
Only then did Nikitha turn to Tharun, who had been waiting silently in the corridor, watching everything unfold with growing disbelief.
“Let’s go,” she said quietly. “Sharmi will take care of him from here.”
Tharun stared at her, his expression a mix of shock, anger, and confusion. “What are you doing, Nikitha? Are you even human? You rushed here half-naked, claimed to be his wife, signed the papers… and now you want to run away before he wakes up? Stay here. Don’t move. Face it.”
He stepped closer, voice low but intense. “I just wonder if what you said a few hours ago is still valid.”
Nikitha pressed her hand against his chest, her eyes tired but determined. “I won’t change my decision. It has been decided.”
“Then stay here with me,” Tharun said, grabbing her wrist gently. “Let’s face this together. We’ll wait until he gets okay.”
She shook her head firmly. “No.”
“Why?” Tharun demanded, frustration clear in his voice.
“Because he would get hurt,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “Seeing me right now… it would hurt him more than the accident.”
Didn't you realize he got into this accident as he searched for me.. he came all the way to stop me.
Tharun stood there, stunned, as Nikitha turned and walked down the hospital corridor, still wearing his shirt under the borrowed nurse pants. The weight of everything that had happened that night pressed heavily on both of them as they left the hospital together, leaving Jay behind in the ICU.
The storm was far from over.
