While the entire day had been a whirlwind of suspicion and calculation for Sharmi and Jay, Nikitha was lost in her own storm.

The first half of the day, she could barely concentrate on work. Her mind kept circling back to Sharmi’s strange laugh in the lift. Did she see something? Does she know about the kiss with Tharun when the door was open? The fear gnawed at her, making every passing colleague feel like a potential threat. She obsessively checked the office WhatsApp group for any whispers, but nothing appeared.

By afternoon, after she spoke a little with Sharmi, his distracted response assured her, no rumors surfaced, a small relief came — but it was short-lived. Another storm hit when Sharmi casually mentioned she would drop Jay home. Nikitha felt an instant, irrational irritation flare up. How dare she offer him a ride? The possessiveness surprised even her, but she quickly calmed herself, reminding herself of her own double standards.

Tharun, sensing her distant and fearful mood during their brief meeting in his cabin, didn’t push for a kiss. He simply held her hand for a moment, his thumb stroking her knuckles gently, offering silent comfort. Nikitha was grateful, her mind was already too much of a storm to handle anything more.

The drive back home was tedious with her mind occupying random thoughts. She accelerated the car, trying to speed home, imagining Sharmi may cross a line with Jay. On the way, she spotted it parked in the opposite direction near a small gift shop, several kilometers away from their home. She knew it was Sharmi’s car. She was surprised she left home so soon. But she didn’t stop. She accelerated further, reaching home in minutes..

Upon entering, she found Jay alone.

She casually enquired, trying to sound normal, “All good? Where is Sharmi? She always finds reasons to stay longer.”

Jay was not ready to read the underlying tone, his mind was filled with the sudden questions from Sharmi, that almost like digging their secrets. Jay looked at Nikitha’s face, he didn’t want to alarm her or create panic. He simply said, “She just went back. Some emergency at home, it seems.”

For a second he just recalled how he scared Sharmi, his stubborn act.. He looked at Niki and realised how he had never calmly responded to her back when some arguments came up in the past, he had not shown his face like how he did to Sharmi, but he had not cared to respond and clear things properly. Today with Sharmi, he explained and tried to calm her, earlier he never did that with Nikki, His facial expression may even have scared Nikki like it did with Sharmi. Jay learned his first lesson, on what all could have gone wrong.

They had a quiet dinner. Not much was spoken. with every passing minute. The silence was heavy, filled with things neither dared to voice.

That night, both pretended to sleep but took a long time, their minds still churning with everything unsaid.

At 5:40 AM, Nikitha woke first in the soft, early morning light. The moment awareness returned, she froze.

She was lying inside Jay’s arm.

His body had unconsciously pulled her close during the night — his chest pressed warmly against her back, one strong arm wrapped around her waist, holding her securely like he used to in the early days of their marriage. His breath brushed the back of her neck, steady and familiar. The warmth of him seeped through her thin nighty, making her feel strangely safe… yet painfully awkward.

After weeks of cold distance, the sudden closeness felt both comforting and dangerous. Her recent moments with Tharun, the guilt of hurting Jay — it all crashed over her like a wave. She wanted to slip out of his embrace so she wouldn’t disgust him. But she liked his hold. She craved it. She feared if Jay woke, he might feel disgust holding her after everything she had done.

Yet her heart strangely yearned for this warmth. She allowed herself to stay, closing her eyes and silently wishing the moment would last just a little longer.
Several minutes later, she felt his arm slowly withdraw. His hand lingered for a heartbeat on her waist before pulling away, almost reluctantly.
Nikitha carefully opened her eyelids just a sliver to see his reaction.

Jay had pulled back with a sudden, visible shock on his face — like he had disturbed something sacred that wasn’t his to touch anymore. He quickly turned away and pretended to be asleep again, his breathing deliberately even.

Nikitha stayed perfectly still for some minutes, continuing to pretend she was sleeping. The brief, tender moment had ended, leaving only the heavy silence of everything unresolved between them.

The morning breakfast was quiet. They got ready for office, Jay driving the car as he had regained most of his strength.

At the office, when they entered together, the company was discussing refreshment programs. HR had sent a circular in the morning asking for ideas for fun activities after the back-to-back successful launches.

Jay strangely searched for Sharmi out of concern — he had scared her the previous day. He found her standing at the side of the floor.

An hour later, after discussions ended and everyone dispersed, Jay opened his laptop lid. Inside was a decorated card. He opened it.

It had a big “SORRY” written in bold, followed by a message:
“I’m sorry, please forgive me. I genuinely wanted to help a friend, especially my mentor who I consider as a friend. I don’t know, maybe I’m a bit younger so I don’t know my space. I fear my behavior would affect professional relations at the office. I could not get a better mentor than you.

I’m sorry. If you could forgive this junior and would consider me as an indisciplined friend, I would be grateful. I will learn everything from you.

If you could understand my sincerity and forgive me, buy me lunch as an apology from your side…  because you scared me. If not, let me consider this as your final answer and pretend nothing happened. However, I'm not just a specialist at messing up friendship, I'm also a specialist at messing up code. Please help me through someone when I face bugs. :)”

— Yours apologetically, Junior Sharmi

Jay had a small smile. He didn’t know Sharmi was just trying to earn his trust to extract something. else... He thought she was genuinely trying to fix things.
He turned around and called Sharmi, who looked at him with a panicked yet hopeful expression.

“I need to have tablets on time,” he said. “Let’s go to lunch sharp at 1 PM.”
He smiled and turned back to his screen.

Sharmi took her bag and rushed to his place, her face lighting up with relief and energy.

Jay looked at her for a second — enthusiastic and energetic Sharmi immediately coming to his side after his small token of acceptance, attention, and forgiveness. But at the same time, something else deeply hit him.

Looking at her face, he remembered how Nikitha used to be a little enthusiastic at the start of their relationship. What if Nikki wanted the same attention? She might have craved that… also maybe acceptance before all?

Jay started to realize. Last day, she made him realise, how he was lethargic in explaining talking calm to Nikki. Now a lesson on attention and acceptance..

He knew it could be late, but he could not deny it. For a second, he looked at Sharmi and asked himself in his mind, What else are you going to teach me, Sharmi?

When is the next update bro?
