Chapter 54: Sharmi's Suspicion
The question from Sharmi hung in the air like smoke — thick, suffocating, and impossible to ignore.
Nikitha could not face it. It felt beyond disgusting. But the reality was undeniable: she was exactly leaving that impression on everyone. She and Jay had purposely hidden their marital status for years. For a long time, the office believed Nikitha was trying to get into an affair with Jay. Jay had publicly shown disinterest, which only fueled the rumors. Now, with Anjali gone, Jay looked alone and vulnerable. And Nikitha’s recent little acts of care made Sharmi think she was trying for both Jay and Tharun while her “husband” was away.
The realization made her feel sick. Her image was being tarnished — painted as a woman juggling two men. She couldn’t explain anything without letting their deepest secret out. Deep down, she still felt indebted to Jay. She wanted to protect their secret until the loan was cleared. Revealing it now would destroy everything they had built.
She forced a calm, almost defensive smile. “Nothing special. I just felt bad. Like you think I eyed him once… if you feel bad about me for that, I can’t help it. I don’t oscillate. I’m just feeling bad like any co-human would. I’m staying in the same building and his wife is my friend. That’s it.”
Sharmi looked at her for a long moment. Something still looked odd in her eyes — a flicker of doubt, curiosity, and mild suspicion. She decided not to push further right then.
“I’ll take him to the hospital maybe later, as you said,” Sharmi replied. “He is important for my team and a good guide.”
Nikitha continued, trying to sound casual. “Please don’t let Jay know about this. I don’t want him to misunderstand. He is not with Anjali now, and I’m alone in his house. I don’t want something else to happen or be misread.”
Sharmi gave a confused yet assuring nod. “No issues.”
Post-lunch, Nikitha didn’t go to Tharun’s cabin. She stayed at her desk, working on pending proposals. From the corner of her eye, she saw Sharmi compelling Jay to go with her to the hospital in her car. She watched everything — the way Sharmi helped him into the passenger seat, the casual concern on her face. Jay informed Sharmi that his car was with Nikitha. Nikitha had already told him she would take him to the hospital in her car and come back after work.
By 7 PM, Nikitha returned home.
As she approached the villa, she realized the car parked at a distance was Sharmi’s — and she was still inside.
She couldn’t believe it. Shouldn’t she have dropped him and left? Why is she taking such liberty?
She didn’t delay. She entered through the main door.
Sharmi welcomed her with a warm smile. “Nikki, you’re back.”
Nikitha asked coldly, trying to mask her irritation, “You didn’t leave yet? What will his wife think?”
She subtly pushed the conversation away from Jay without him noticing.
Sharmi replied innocently, “Why are you getting tense, Nikki? Cool down.
Jay is my senior and now a friend. His wife will understand.
See, there are tablets — tell his wife he needs real care…if possible ask her to return from wherever she is, Jay need real care.. else someone will fill the space like Anjali did.”
She left after giving a sound voice, audible to Jay... “Jay, kanji is ready. Have it yourself.” She walked out, leaving the house.
Nikitha closed the door after seeing Sharmi’s car leave.
for a moment Nikitha thought, she had chased Sharmi away.. but what she really doesn't know is Sharmi had smelled something that she should not have.
10 Km's away
Sharmi, while driving away, looked serious.
her mind kept repeating same words...
What is the game you all are playing? Nikki? Jay? What is this drama for?
Sharmi recalled the evening episode. When she took Jay back from the hospital, the doctor had given him an injection. She helped him reach his bed and even helped him with some light cooking. She could not believe how could a women a wife could not address her husband need and stay distant for long.. how she shamelessly ask Nikitha to take care of Jay, letting another women to take care of her husband, what kind of women she is .. the thought kept bugging her, she was eager to see the face of Jay wife.. the place seemed to be neat and clean yet, more femine feel like a women constantly stay here. she had looked around the walls for picture of his wife but there were no photos of Jay with his wife. Not a single one. It looked strange. Is he really married? Not even one photo?
In the guise of helping and cleaning, she had tried scanning the house. She waited for the right moment. The entire hall didnt give any clue. May be in bed room she thought... she got a quick plan. She put the TV volume on high and entered Jay bedroom and she said, she would change bedsheet... clean bed so he would feel fresh.. Jay got up and marched towards hall, he sat at sofa and watch tv for a few minutes so she could “clean the house.”
When Jay moved to the hall, she quickly scanned the bedroom for intimate things or some documents like photos or any id cards .. nothing even Jay's was not around.. The wardrobe looked locked.
Even opening it might cause noise. She quickly arranged his bed and searched for anything personal.
That was when she noticed it — a saree at the laundry box in the corner. A familiar peach-colored saree with a distinctive floral border and design. It was the only women’s clothing outside the wardrobe. She realized it was Nikitha’s.
The scene gave her a shock.. she expected to see any name or photo of his wife but only a saree? that too Nikitha's
a dozens of questions popped up for her...
Are they in an affair?
Did the two purposefully hide it? Or maybe they are actually a couple and not strangers?
If that’s the case, why didn’t she create a noise when Anjali was in a loud affair with him?
Sharmi could not come to a clear conclusion. But the curiosity of knowing about the two had alarmingly increased inside her. She knew she wouldn’t get an answer if she asked straight. She decided to investigate and know about them secretly.
