Chapter 37: The Breaking Point

The evening at 5.30 parking lot was nearly empty by the time Jay reached his car.

Nikitha was already standing there, holding a sleek dress cover in her hands. Tharun stood beside her, looking relaxed and confident.
Tharun spotted Jay and walked over with a broad smile. Without warning, he pulled Jay into a tight hug.

“Man, thank you,” Tharun said warmly. “You’re one of the real reasons I’m going to date Nikitha. This beauty right here.”
Nikitha’s face dropped instantly. She looked down, embarrassed and uncomfortable.

Tharun continued, still holding the hug, “Niki, you don’t know this — I actually forced you into the core team just so I could get closer to you. And look… it worked.” He pulled back and grinned. “I’ll drop my angel at your house. I’ll pick her up at 6:30.”

He leaned closer to Jay’s ear and whispered, “Maybe tonight she won’t come back at all.”
Everything inside Jay turned red.
Nikitha felt a spike of panic. He would turn into a monster if someone threatens him like this.

Tharun turned toward Nikitha with a charming smile. Suddenly, Jay stepped forward and slapped Tharun hard on the back with both hands — a loud, stinging sound.
“Ahhh!” Tharun stumbled forward, startled.

“What the hell was that?” he asked, rubbing his back.
Jay forced a smile. “Congrats, buddy. Old college way of congratulating someone when they pick their woman. I’m waiting for you to pick someone soon. I’ll return the favor.”

Both men laughed awkwardly, trying to play it off. But the tension in the air was thick.

For a second, Nikitha felt like a war was about to break out because of her. She looked at both men — Jay, well-built but not overly muscular, clean-shaven; Tharun, slightly more defined, with that commanding presence. It was the first time she had really compared their bodies so openly. Shit, she thought to herself.

Tharun gave a final nod. “Take care,” he said and walked away.

Nikitha sat in the passenger seat of Jay’s car. The moment they got on the main road, she turned on him furiously.

“What the hell did you try to do to Tharun?” she snapped. “Did you ever try to prove your machoism like that before? If you behave like this again, I will never see your face!”

Jay’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“Then what did you want me to do?” he shot back, voice rising.
“Just smile and congratulate him while he whispers that he’s going to fuck my wife tonight?”

He punched the steering wheel hard. A sharp horn blared.
Nikitha flinched at the sudden outburst.

“Why are you behaving this way?” she asked, voice shaking.
Did he know you are my real husband?

Jay said, he doesn't know but you and i know we are husband and wife right?
“You want me to stay calm and watch someone fuck my wife?

Jay’s voice cracked with pain and rage.

Nikitha’s eyes flashed.
“Didn’t I watch the same thing?” Stay calm and watch.

she countered sharply. “You fucking someone else — not behind closed doors, but in the storage room, in front of the entire floor in broad daylight?

No one even knew you were my husband, yet you felt pain when just one person knows your wife is involved with someone, even in that case someone and the one person are one and the same.

What about me? More than 50 people watched my husband screwing someone.
How do you think I felt? Should I have jumped and beaten Anjali like you almost did today?”

She laughed bitterly.

“You know what’s funny? Anjali and I still speak normally even after knowing everything. When men do it, they’re called playboys. When women do it, they’re called bitches.”
There was a heavy silence.

Nikitha’s voice softened but remained firm.
“Promise me you won’t hurt Tharun. No matter what happens. If you still consider me the same friend.”
Jay took a deep, painful breath.

“Everything was fine when I considered you as a friend… friend with benefits. The moment I saw you as my wife, as someone I love… everything turned upside down.”
Nikitha looked straight ahead.

“Fair then. Let’s just be friends again.”
She paused, then added coldly, “The promise is still pending.”
Jay replied with a deep breath, voice heavy with defeat.

“You said you’re going to move on… there is nothing left for me to promise or hang on to. I feel disgusting trying to prove my love now. I just wish it shouldn’t be too late when you realise my love.”

The car reached their villa. The time was already 6 PM.
Jay stopped the engine and said without looking at her, “Go ahead. Go upstairs.
That’s your house now. Tharun will be looking for you at 6:30.”

NIkitha coldly said, you dont need to worry about me.
